Cooking TechniquesStirringStir foods such as casseroles and vegetables whilecooking to distribute heat evenly. Food at the out-side of the dish absorbs more energy and heatsmore quickly, so stir from the outside to the center. The oven will turn off when you open the door tostir your food.ArrangementArrange unevenly shaped foods, such as chickenpieces or chops, with the thicker, meatier partstoward the outside of the turntable where theyreceive more microwave energy. To prevent over-cooking, place thin or delicate parts toward thecenter of the turntable.ShieldingShield food with narrow strips of aluminum foil toprevent overcooking. Areas that need shieldinginclude poultry wing-tips, the ends of poultry legs, and corners of square baking dishes. Use onlysmall amounts of aluminum foil. Larger amountscan damage your oven.Turning Turn foods over midway through cooking to exposeall parts to microwave energy. This is especiallyimportant with large items such as roasts.Standing Foods cooked in the microwave build up internalheat and continue to cook for a few minutes afterthe oven stops. Let foods stand to complete cook-ing, especially foods such as roasts and wholevegetables. Roasts need this time to completecooking in the center without overcooking theouter areas. All liquids, such as soup or hot choco-late, should be shaken or stirred when cooking iscomplete. Let liquids stand a moment before serv-ing. When heating baby food, stir well and test thetemperature before serving.Adding Moisture Microwave energy is attracted to water molecules.Food that is uneven in moisture content should becovered or allowed to stand so that the heat dis-perses evenly. Add a small amount of water to dryfood to help it cook.General Tips • Dense foods, such as potatoes, take longer toheat than lighter foods. Foods with a delicatetexture should be heated at a low power level toavoid becoming tough.• Altitude and the type of cookware you are usingcan affect cooking time. When using a newrecipe, use the minimum cooking time andcheck the food occasionally to prevent over-cooking.• Foods with a non-porous skin or shell, such aspotatoes, eggs, or hot dogs, should be piercedto prevent bursting.• Frying with heating oil or fat is not recommend-ed. Fat and oil can suddenly boil over andcause severe burns.• Some ingredients heat faster than others. Forexample, the jelly inside a jelly doughnut will behotter than the dough. Keep this in mind to avoidburns.• Home canning in the microwave oven is notrecommended because all harmful bacteria maynot be destroyed by the microwave heatingprocess.• Although microwaves do not heat the cook-ware, the heat is often transferred to the cook-ware. Always use pot holders when removingfood from the microwave and instruct childrento do the same.COOKINGINSTRUCTIONS17COOKINGINSTRUCTIONSKeep in mind that microwaves cook from the outside to the inside, therefore the following techniques willgive the best results.MS8796/9796-GB 9/27/00 3:21 AM Page 17
Important• After installing the oven and plugging into anelectrical outlet, do not unplug the power cord. The gas sensor needs time to stabilize in orderto cook satisfactorily.• It its not advisable to use the auto sensor cook-ing feature on a continuous cooking operation,i.e. one cooking operation immediately afteranother.Let the oven cool 5 minutes before using AutoSenser again.• Install the oven in a well ventilated location forproper cooling and airflow and to ensure thesensor will operate accurately.• To avoid poor results, do not use the AutoSensor when the room ambient temperature istoo high or too low. • Do not use volatile detergent to clean youroven. Gas resulting from this detergent mayaffect the sensor. • Avoid placing the oven near high moisture orgas emitting appliances, since this will interferewith the proper performance of the AutoSensor.• Always keep the inside of the oven clean. Wipeall spills with a damp cloth. This oven is designed for household use only.Auto Sensor CookThe Auto Sensor allows you to cook your foodautomatically by detecting the amount of gasesgenerated from the food while cooking.• When cooking food, many kinds of gases aregenerated. The Auto Sensor determines theproper time and power level by detecting thesegases from the food, eliminating the need to setthe cooking time and power level.• When you cover a container with its lid or plas-tic wrap during Sensor Cooking, the AutoSensor will detect the gases generated afterthe container has been saturated with steam.• Shortly before cooking ends, the remainingcooking time will begin its count down. Thiswill be a good time for you to rotate or stir thefood for even cooking if it is necessary.• Before auto sensor cooking food may be sea-soned with herbs, spices or browning sauces.A word of caution though, salt or sugar maycause burn spots on food so these ingredientsshould be added after cooking.• The MORE/LESS function pad is used toincrease or decrease cooking time. You shoulduse this function to adjust the degree of cook-ing to suit your personal taste.Utensils & Cover For Sensor Cooking• To obtain good cooking results with this func-tion, follow the directions for selecting appro-priate containers and covers in the charts inthis book.• Always use microwave-safe containers andcover them with their lids or with plastic wrap. When using plastic wrap, turn back one cornerto allow steam to escape at the proper rate.• Always cover with the lid intended for theutensil being used. If the utensil does not haveits own lid, use plastic wrap.• Fill containers at least half full.• Foods that require stirring or rotating should bestirred or turned toward the end of the SensorCook cycle, after the time has started to countdown on the display.COOKINGINSTRUCTIONS18 COOKINGINSTRUCTIONSMS8796/9796-GB 9/27/00 3:21 AM Page 18
