Additional batteries are available for purchase (ask your SAMSUNG dealer for further details):Precautions When Using Batteries• Never use any charger or battery that is damaged in anyway.• Use the battery only for its intended purpose.• If you use the phone near the network’s base station, ituses less power; talk and standby times are greatlyaffected by the signal strength on the cellular network andthe parameters set by the network operator.• Battery charging times depend on the remaining batterycharge and the type of battery and charger used. Thebattery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times, but it will gradually wear out. When the operation time(talk time and standby time) is noticeably shorter thannormal, it is time to buy a new battery.• If left unused, a fully charged battery will discharge itselfover time.UUssiinngg tthhee BBaatttteerriieess• Use only Samsung-approved batteries and recharge yourbattery only with Samsung-approved chargers. When acharger is not in use, disconnect it from the power source.Do not leave the battery connected to a charger for morethan a week, since overcharging may shorten its life.• Extreme temperatures will affect the charging capacity ofyour battery: it may require cooling or warming first.• Do not leave the battery in hot or cold places, such as in acar in summer or winter conditions, as you will reduce thecapacity and life-time of the battery. Always try to keepthe battery at room temperature. A phone with a hot orcold battery may temporarily not work, even when thebattery is fully charged. Li-ion batteries are particularlyaffected by temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F).• Do not short-circuit the battery. Accidental short circuitingcan occur when a metallic object (coin, clip or pen) causesa direct connection between the + and - terminals of thebattery (metal strips on the back of the battery), forexample when you carry a spare battery in a pocket or bag.Short-circuiting the terminals may damage the battery orthe object causing the short-circuit.• Dispose of used batteries in accordance with localregulations. Always recycle. Do not dispose of batteries ina fire.
74 75Safety InformationRoad Safety• Remember, road safety always comes first!• Do not use a hand-held phone while driving a vehicle.Always park the vehicle before having a conversation.• Make sure that the phone is stored safely and will not fallor be broken in the event of a collision or emergency stop.• The use of an alert device to operate a vehicle’s lights orhorn on public roads is not permitted.• Only qualified personnel should install or service the phonein a vehicle. Faulty installation or service may bedangerous and may invalidate any warranty applicable tothe unit.• Electronic fuel injection, anti-skid braking, electronic cruisecontrol or any other electronic systems may malfunctiondue to the lack of protection from radio signals. Check regularly that all cellular phone equipment in your vehicleis mounted and operating correctly.Operating Environment• Remember to follow any special regulations in force in anyarea and always switch off your phone whenever it isforbidden to use it, or when it may cause interference ordanger (in a hospital for example).SSaaffeettyy IInnffoorrmmaattiioonn• Operation of any radio transmitting equipment, includingcellular phones, may interfere with inadequately protectedmedical devices. Consult a physician or the manufacturerof the medical device if you have any questions. Otherelectronic equipment may also be subject to interference.• As with other mobile radio transmitting equipment, you areadvised that for satisfactory operations and personal safety, the equipment should only be used in the normaloperating position.• Always switch off the phone when at a refuelling point(service station). You are reminded of the need to observerestrictions on the use of radio equipment in fuel depots(fuel storage and distribution areas), chemical plants orwhere blasting operations are in progress.• Do not store or carry flammable liquids, gases or explosivematerials in the same compartment as the phone, its partsor accessories.• Switch off your cellular phone when in an aircraft. The useof cellular phones in an aircraft is illegal and may be dangerous to the operation of the aircraft or disrupt thecellular network. Failure to observe these instructions maylead to the suspension or denial of cellular telephoneservices to the offender, legal action or both.

The suggestions below willhelp you fulfill the warranty obligations and enjoy this productfor many years.• Keep the phone and all its parts and accessories out of thereach of small children.• Keep the phone dry. Precipitation, humidity and liquidscontaining minerals will corrode the electronic circuits.• Do not use or store the phone in dusty, dirty areas as itscomponents may be damaged.• Do not store the phone in hot areas. High temperatures canshorten the life of electronic devices, damage batteries andwarp or melt certain plastics.• Do not store the phone in cold areas. When the phonewarms up (to its normal temperature), moisture can forminside the phone, which may damage the electroniccircuits.• Do not attempt to open the phone. Non-expert handling ofthe phone may damage it.• Do not drop or knock the phone. Check with local cellular serviceproviders.
78 79Glossary of TermsAirtime - Actual time spent talking on the wireless phone. Most carriers bill customers based on how manyminutes of airtime they use each month.Antenna - A device for transmitting or receiving signals. Thesize and shape of antennas is determined, in part,by the frequency of the signal they receive.Wireless phones and the base station must haveantennas.Base Station - The fixed radio transmitter/receiver thatmaintains communications with mobile radiotelephones within a given area. (Typicallycalled a cell or cell site)CDMA - (Code Division Multiple Access) A spread-spectrumapproach to digital transmission. With CDMA, eachconversion is digitized and then tagged with a code. The mobile phone deciphers only a particular code topick the right conversation off the air. Thetransmitted signal is just above noise level acrossthe available bandwidth.Channel - Communications signals transmit along pathscalled channels.Codec - Compression & Decompression.Deactivation - The process of rendering a wireless phoneinactive. DTMF - (Dual-tone Modulated Frequency ) You send DTMFsignals when you enter numbers by pressing the digitkeys.GGlloossssaarryy ooff TTeerrmmssEVRC - (Enhanced Variable Rate Codec) EVRC is a new globalstandard for compressing and decompressing voicesignals. EVRC uses a lower bit rate (the number of bitssent per second) than existing CDMA vocoders, whileproviding significant improvements in voice quality. This technology enables your phone to provide superbvoice quality while benefiting from the ability toprocess more cellular voice calls using less bandwidththan the voice codecs in CDMA networks today.Frequency - A measure based on time, as one or more wavesper second, in an electrical or light waveinformation signal. A signal’s frequency is statedin cycles-per-second or Hertz (Hz).Hands-Free - A feature that permits a driver to use awireless phone without lifting or holding the handset - an important safety feature for automobiles, tractors and most other motorizedvehicles.LCD - (Liquid Crystal Display) Commonly used to refer to thescreen display on the wireless phone.LED - (Light Emitting Diode) Commonly used to refer to asmall light on the wireless phone or on the DesktopCharger. The LED lights on the phone to indicate anincoming call. The lights on the charger indicate thatbattery charging is taking place.MP3 - An MP3 is the common name for MPEG-1, 2 (MotionPicture Expert Group) Audio Layer 3. This form ofcompression is approximately 12 times smaller than CDfile. The result is a compression file with near CDquality sound, suitable for sending and downloadingvia the Internet.
