Section 1: Getting Started D307.book Page 10 Thursday, September 29, 2005 3:50 PM Activating Your Phone When you subscribe to a cellular network, you are provided with a plug-in SIM card loaded with your subscription details, such as your PIN or any optional services available. To Install the SIM card, use the following instructions: Installing the SIM Card Section 1 Note: The plug-in SIM card can be easily damaged by scratches or bending, so be careful when handling, inserting, or removing the card. To install the SIM card: 1. If necessary, switch off the phone by holding down the key. 2. Remove the battery. To do so: Slide the battery lock toward the top of the phone and hold it in that position. Lift the battery away as shown. 3. Slide the SIM card into the SIM card socket, as shown, so that the card locks into position. To remove the SIM card, slide it upwards as shown. 5. Replace the battery so that the tabs on the end align with the slots at the bottom of the phone. Make sure that the battery is properly installed before switching on the power. Charging the Battery Your phone is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery. A travel charger comes with your phone for charging the battery. Use only approved batteries and chargers. Ask your local Samsung dealer for further details. The travel charger allows you to use the phone while the battery is charging, but this causes the phone to charge slowly. 12 D307.book Page 13 Thursday, September 29, 2005 3:50 PM Activating Your Phone Note: You must fully charge the battery before using your phone for the first time. A discharged battery recharges fully in approximately 200 minutes. To charge the battery: 1. With the battery in position on the phone, plug the connector of the travel charger into the jack at the bottom of the phone. Section 1 2. Plug the charger into a standard AC wall outlet. 3. When charging is finished, unplug the charger from the power outlet then disconnect it from the phone by pressing the buttons on both sides of the connector and pulling the connector out. Low Battery Indicator When the battery is weak and only a few minutes of talk time remain, a warning tone sounds and a pop-up message repeats at regular intervals on the display. In this case, your phone will turn off the backlight to conserve the remaining battery power. When the battery level is too low, the phone turns off automatically. Turning on Your Phone 1. Press and hold the key until the phone turns on. 2. If the phone asks you to enter a password, enter a password and press the OK soft key or the key. Before connecting the headset, gently pry open the cover of the input jack on the phone to expose the connector inside. 19. Text Entry Mode key The Text Entry mode key determines how you enter text, and numbers. While at any text entry screen, press the key to change the character input type. The greater the number of bars, the stronger the signal. Appears when you are connected to the GPRS network. Appears when a new text message has been received. Appears when a new voice mail has been received. Appears when a new multimedia message has been received. Appears when there is a new text message and a new multimedia message received. Appears when there is a new email message received. Appears when you set an alarm to ring at a specified time. For details, see "Setting Alarms" on page 166. Appears when you are out of your service area. Section 2 Appears when a call is in progress. Appears when you are connected to a WAP service. Appears when the Call Forwarding feature is active. Appears when speakerphone is active. Note: The IM icon changes according to the IM provider. Section 2 Selecting Functions and Options Your phone offers a set of functions that can be customized for your ease and specific needs. These functions are arranged in menus and sub-menus, accessed using the two soft keys. Enter the code and press the OK soft key or the key. Section 2: Understanding Your Phone 31 Section 2 When you access a list of options, your phone highlights the currently active option. If, however, there are only two options, such as On/Off or Enable/Disable, your phone highlights the option that is not currently active, so that you can select it directly. Right Soft Key Some functions of the right soft key are as follows. • In the idle screen, press the IM ( ) soft key to open the Instant Message Menu screen. • When in a menu mode the right ( ) soft key function is Back. Clear Key The CLR key is used to erase or clear numbers, text, or symbols from the display. You can also use to return to a previous menu or to return to idle mode from any menu. • If you enter an incorrect character, briefly press • To back up one menu level, briefly press to Section 2 backspace (and delete) the character. Press back to the other call. again to switch Section 2 Speakerphone Key Use the Speakerphone key (located on the right side of your phone) to activate or deactivate the speakerphone function before or during a call. Use the volume keys (located on the left side of your phone) to adjust the call volume. 34 D307.book Page 35 Thursday, September 29, 2005 3:50 PM Command Keys Navigation Keys Use the directional keys on the navigation key to browse menus, sub menus, and lists. Each key also acts as a shortcut to launch applications. The navigation keys are user-definable. Back Light External LCD Your phone has an external display on the front of the phone. It indicates when you have an incoming call or a message. It also alerts you at a specified time when you have set an alarm. The backlight turns on and the corresponding icon appears on the external display. You can change the display type for the external display in the Front LCD Display menu. The caller’s phone number or name, if stored in the Address Book, displays. 1. If necessary, open the phone. 2. Press the key or the Accept soft key to answer the incoming call. When the Active Folder option in the Extra Settings (See "Extra Settings" on page 140) menu is activated, you can answer the call simply by opening the phone. When the Any Key Answer option in the Extra Settings (See "Extra Settings" on page 140) menu is activated, you can answer the call by pressing any key except the key or the Reject soft key. When this option is off you can only answer the call by pressing the Accept soft key or the key. Notes: To reject the call, press the Reject soft key or the key. You can mute the ringer by pressing the volume keys on the left side of the phone. 3. End the call by closing the phone or press the key. You can access these functions from the Idle or Menu mode. Accessing the Call Log in Idle Mode In Idle mode, press the key. A list of the most recent numbers used, in the order you dialed or received them. 1. To dial the number, press the key. 2. To view options, press the Options soft key. Choose from the View, Edit, Delete or Delete All options. Editing Numbers in the Call Log 1. To edit the number, press the Options ( ) soft key, highlight Edit and press the soft key or the key. Make the edits to the number. 2. Press the Save soft key. 3. Highlight the new entry type and press the Select soft key or the key. Switching to Quiet Mode Quiet mode is used to stop your phone from sounding when it is inappropriate. In Quiet mode, instead of making sounds, your phone will vibrate, or do nothing, depending on the Quiet Mode setting. See "Quiet Mode" on page 146 for more detailed information. Options During a Call Your phone provides a number of functions that you can use during a call. Putting a Call on Hold 1. To place a call on hold, simply press the Hold soft key. 2. To reactivate the call, press the Unhold soft key. Making a Second Call Section 3 To make a call while you have a call in progress: 1. Enter the phone number that you wish to dial or look it up in the Address Book. 2. Press the key to dial the second call. Switching Between Two Calls When you have an active call and a call on hold, you may switch between the two calls, changing the one on hold to active and placing the other on hold. 1. To switch between the two calls, simply press the Swap soft key. The current call is placed on hold and the call on hold is reactivated so that you can continue conversing with that person. 2. When you want to finish, end each call normally by pressing the key. Answering a Waiting Call You can answer an incoming call while you have a call in progress, if this service is supported by the network and you have set Call Waiting to Activate; see "Setting Call Waiting Options" on page 152. You are notified of an incoming call by a call waiting tone. To answer a call while you have a call in progress: 1. Press the key to answer the incoming call. Alternatively, press the Spacebar ( call. ) key to unmute the Muting or Sending Key Tones Mute Keys and Send Key options allow you to turn off and on the key tones. If the Mute Keys option is selected, your phone does not transmit the DTMF (Dual Tone Multi-Frequency) tones of the keys, which allows you to press keys without hearing key tones during a call. Making a Conference Call A conference call is a network service that allows up to six people to take part simultaneously in a multi-party call. Call the second participant in the normal way. The first call is automatically put on hold. 2. To join the first participant to the conference call, press the Options soft key and select Join. Instead, the application picks the best from among the possible choices. Sensitivity In VoiceSignal, "sensitivity" controls the balance between rejecting too much, which means the phone frequently does not recognize names, numbers, or commands, and rejecting too little, which means it frequently recognizes something even if nothing was said. You can also change the speed and volume of name playback. • Prompts: Turns playback on or off for prompts such as "Please say a command." • Digits: Turns playback on or off for digits, for example, when confirming a phone number.
