3534REN Number: The Ringer Equivalence Number (REN)assigned to each terminal deviceprovides an indication of the maximumnumber of terminals allowed to beconnected to a telephone interface. The REN number of this phone islocated on the bottom of the base unit. The termination on an interface mayconsist of any combination of devicessubject only to the requirement that thesum of the Ringer Equivalence Numbersof all the devices does not exceed 5.CAUTIONThis product is intended for use inCANADA only. Sale or use in othercountries may violate local laws.Cordless telephones use radiofrequencies to allow mobility. Thisaffects the performance of your phone.1. NOISEElectrical pulse noise is present in mosthomes at one time or another. This ismost intense during electrical storms.Certain kinds of electrical equipment, such as light dimmers, fluorescentbulbs, motors, fans, etc., also generatepulse noise.Because radio frequencies are suscep-tible to this, you may on occasion hearpulse noise through the handset. This isusually only a minor annoyance andshould not be interpreted as a defect ofthe phone.2. RANGEBecause radio frequencies are used, thelocation of the base station can affectthe operating range of the phone. Tryseveral locations and choose the onethat gives the clearest signal to thehandset. (Turning in a circle whileholding the handset may also increasethe operating range.)3. INTERFERENCEElectronic circuits activate a relay toconnect the unit to your telephone line. These electronic circuits operate in theradio frequency spectrum. While severalprotection circuits are used to preventunwanted signals, there may be periodswhen these unwanted signals enter thebase station. You may hear click or hearthe relay activate when you are notusing the cordless handset. If this occursfrequently, you can minimize oreliminate the problem by lowering theheight of the base station or relocatingthe base station. It may also be helpfulto change the operating channel and/orthe security code setting.Operation is subject to the following twoconditions: (1) this device may not causeinterference, and (2) this device mustaccept any interference, includinginterference that may cause undesiredoperation of the device.NOTICE:Privacy of communications may not beensured when using this telephone.Other devices, including other cordlesstelephones, may interfere with theoperation of this cordless telephone orcause noise during operation. Unitswithout coded access may be accessedby other radio communication systems.Cordless telephones must not causeinterference to any licensed radioservice. The Industry Canada Label identifiescertified equipment. This certificationmeans that the equipment meets certaintelecommunications network protective, operational and safety requirements. The ministry does not guarantee that theequipment will operate to the user’ssatisfaction. Before installing this equipment, usersshould ensure that it is permissible to beconnected to the facilities of the localtelecommunications company. Theequipment must also be installed usingan acceptable method of construction. TECHNICAL INFORMATIONMAXIMIZE BATTERY PERFORMANCEThe freedom that your cordless telephone can offer is fully dependenton the performance of the rechargeable battery in the handset. Tomaximize the battery performance, follow these guidelines:Charge it for a full 12 hours Before initial use of your new battery, charge it for 12 hours continu-ously. The proper initial charging is very important to maximize thebattery performance.Keep the contacts cleanYou can never fully recharge the battery if the contacts are dirty. Cleanall the contacts – two at the bottom of handset and two in the basecradle – periodically using a pencil eraser.Do not replace the handset in the base after each callRepeated short charging creates a memory effect in the battery. Oncea rechargeable battery acquires this “short memory”, it sends a “lowbattery” signal even when it is almost fully charged. The battery thenneeds to be charged frequently. To avoid this, leave the handset awayfrom the cradle until it really needs recharging. Refresh batteryIf your battery seems to need recharging more often than usual, it mayhave lost part of its charging capacity because of premature recharges. To bring back its full capacity, try “refreshing” the battery: 1. First discharge the battery by leaving the handset in TALK modeuntil Battery Low indication turns on. (Disconnect the base fromthe telephone line, so that your line is not busy all the time.) 2. Then charge it for 12 continuous hours. 3. Repeat the above once more.CLT-2422E-NEW 7/5/02 7:31 PM Page 34
