INTRODUCTIONCAUTION: When using telephone equipment,there are basic safety instructions that shouldalways be followed. Refer to the IMPORTANTSAFETY INSTRUCTIONS provided with thisproduct and save them for future reference.Your Caller ID phone stores and displays specificinformation, provided by your local telephone company, tosubscribers of Caller ID or similar caller identificationservices.Your Caller ID phone enables you to:• Identify callers before you answer the phone.• View the time and date of each incoming call.• Record up to 40 Caller ID messages sequentially.• Know who called while you were away.To get the most from your new phone, we suggest thatyou take a few minutes right now to read through thisuser's guide.IMPORTANT: In order to use all of the features of thisphone, you must subscribe to either the standardName/Number Caller ID Service or Call WaitingCaller ID Service. To know who is calling while you areon the phone, you must subscribe to Call WaitingCaller ID Service.IMPORTANT: Because cordless phones operate onelectricity, you should have at least one phone in yourhome that isn’t cordless, in case the power  in yourhome goes out.BEFORE YOU BEGINPARTS CHECKLISTMake sure your package includes the items shown here.INSTALLATIONDESKTOP INSTALLATIONNOTE : The handset can be charged facing up or down.1. Set the RINGER switch (on the handset) to ON and placethe handset in the cradle on the base.2. Plug the power supply into the power jack on thebottom of the base and the other end into an electricaloutlet. The in use/charge indicator comes on, verifyingthe battery is charging.Allow the phone to charge for 12 hours prior to first use.If you don't properly charge the phone, batteryperformance will be compromised.NOTE: DO NOT connect the telephone line to themodular jack until the phone has charged for 12 hours.3. Plug the telephone line cord into the PHONE LINE jackon the bottom of the base and into a modular jack.CAUTION: Use only the SANYO Canada Inc.power supply that came with this unit. Usingother power supplies may damage the unit.NOTE: The phone automatically defaults to touch-tone dialing. To change to pulse (rotary) dialing, see"TONE/PULSE DIALING." If you don't know whichtype of service you have, check with your localtelephone company.WALL MOUNT INSTALLATIONBecause it is necessary to charge the handset for 12 hoursprior to connecting the phone for use the first time, it isbetter to leave the unit on a flat surface during initialcharge before attempting to hang it on the wall.1. Set the RINGER switch (on the handset) to ON and placethe handset in the cradle on the base.2. Plug the power supply into the power jack on thebottom of the base and the other end into an electricaloutlet. The in use/charge indicator comes on, verifyingthe battery is charging.Allow the phone to charge for 12 hours prior to first use.If you don't properly charge the phone, batteryperformance will be compromised.NOTE: DO NOT connect the telephone line to themodular jack until the phone has charged for 12 hours.3. Plug the telephone line cord into the PHONE LINE jack on thebottom of the base and the other end into a modular jack.4. Slip the mounting holes on the bracket over the wallplate posts and firmly slide the unit down into place(wall plate not included).5. Place the handset in the cradle.NOTE: If desired, gather the extra line cord together,and fasten with a wire tie.NOTE: The phone automatically defaults to touch-tone dialing. To change to pulse (rotary) dialing,see "TONE/PULSE DIALING." Usingother power supplies may damage the unit.SET UPThere are three programmable menus available: Language,Tone/Pulse Dialing and Area Code.LANGUAGE SETTING1. Make sure the phone is OFF (not in TALK mode).2. Press the flash/program button until “ 1ENG 2FRA 3ESP”shows in the display. “1ENG” is the default setting.3. Use the CID/VOL left (-) or right (+) arrow button toscroll to 1ENG 2FRA 3ESP, or use the touch tonepad on the handset to enter the desired setting. Forexample, to choose English, press the number 1 key.1ENG is the default setting.4. Press flash/program to store selection. You will hear aconfirmation tone.TONE/PULSE DIALING1. Make sure the phone is OFF (not in TALK mode).2. Press the flash/program button until “ 1TONE 2PULSE”shows in the display. “1TONE” is the default setting.3. Use the CID/VOL left (-) or right (+) arrow button toscroll to 1TONE or 2PULSE, or use the touch tonepad on the handset to enter the desired setting. Forexample, to choose TONE dialing, press the number 1key. 1TONE is the default setting.4. Press flash/program to store selection. You will hear aconfirmation tone.AREA CODE SETTING1. Make sure the phone is OFF (not in TALK mode).2. Press the flash/program button until  “- - - SET AREACODE” shows in the display. “- - -”  is the default setting.3. Use the handset number pad to enter your three digitarea code.4. Press flash/program to store selection. You will hear aconfirmation tone.CORDLESS PHONE BASICSMAKING A CALLTo make a call, press the TALK button before you dial andpress it again to hang up.REDIALWhile the phone is on, press the redial button to redial thelast number you dialed (up to 32 digits). If you get a busysignal, and want to keep dialing the number, just press redialagain (you don't have to turn the phone off and back on).FLASHUse the flash/program button to activate custom callingservices such as call waiting or call transfer, whichare available through your local phone company.TIP: Don’t use the TALK button to activate customcalling services such as call waiting, or you’ll hang upthe phone.IN USE INDICATOR LIGHTThe in use indicator is lit when the handset is charging inthe cradle on the base or when the phone is ON. It flasheswhen you receive a call or when the PAGE button ispressed.CHANNEL BUTTONWhile talking, you might need to manually change thechannel in order to get rid of static. Press and release thechannel/delete button to advance to the next channel. Thecurrent channel number appears on the left side of thedisplay.TEMPORARY TONEThis feature enables pulse (rotary) service phone users toaccess touch-tone services offered by banks, credit cardcompanies, etc., by pressing the *tone/cancel button totemporarily make the phone touch-tone compatible. To getinformation about your bank account, for example, you would:1. Call the bank’s information line.2. Press the *tone/cancel button after your call is answered.3. Follow the voice instructions to complete your transaction.4. Hang up when finished. The phone returns to Pulse(rotary) service.CANCELPress the *tone/cancel button to cancel any command youinitiated.FINDING THE HANDSETThis feature helps to locate a misplaced handset.Press the page button on the base. The handset beepscontinuously for about two minutes or until you press anybutton on the handset. You may also press page to cancel.NOTE: The ringer does not have to be ON for thisfeature to work.RINGER SWITCHThe ringer switch must be ON for the handset to ringduring incoming calls.VOLUMEWhile talking, press the  VOLUME buttons (left and rightarrows) to adjust the listening level of the handset'searpiece. There are four volume levels. Press the rightarrow (+) button to increase the volume level, and pressthe left arrow (-) button to decrease. VOL 1 is the lowestlevel and VOL 4 is the loudest.CALL TIMERWhile you are talking on the phone, the total talk time isdisplayed on the bottom line of the display.CALLER ID FEATURESThis unit receives and displays information transmitted byyour local phone company. This information can includethe phone number, date, and time; or the name, phonenumber, date, and time. The unit can store up to 40 callsfor later review.CALLER ID WITH CALL WAITINGProvided you subscribe to Caller ID with Call Waitingservice from your phone company, you are able to see whois calling when you hear the call waiting beep. The calleridentification information appears in the display after youhear the tone.• Press the flash/program button to put the current personon hold so that you can answer the incoming call.IMPORTANT: In order to use the Caller ID functionswith this unit, you must subscribe to either thestandard Name/Number Caller ID Service or CallWaiting Caller ID Service. To know who is calling whileyou are on the phone, you must subscribe to CallWaiting Caller ID Service.RECEIVING AND STORING CALLSWhen you receive a call, the information is transmitted bythe phone company to your Caller ID telephone betweenthe first and second ring.When the memory is full, a new call automatically replacesthe oldest call in memory. NEW appears in the display forcalls received that have not been reviewed. REPT indicatesthat a new call from the same number was received morethan once.NOTE: Check with your local phone companyregarding name service availability.REVIEWING RECORDSAs calls are received and stored, the display is updated tolet you know how many calls have been received.• Press the CID/VOL (-) arrow button to scroll through thecall records from the most recent to the oldest.• Press the CID/VOL (+) arrow button to scroll through thecall records from the oldest to the newest.TRANSFERRING CID RECORDS TOMEMORYYou may transfer a Caller ID record to your phone’s memory.NOTE: It is important that you format CID recordscorrectly before storing in memory. It is not possible tore-format CID records stored in memory.1. Use the CID/VOL (-) arrow or CID/VOL (+) arrow button toscroll to the desired record.2. Press the memory button.3. Press the desired memory location. You will hear aconfirmation tone. Example, press the number 1 key tostore the record in memory location 1.To replace a CID record stored in a memory locationwith a new CID record:1. Repeat steps 1 through 3.2. Press the memory button and REPLACE MEMO? showsin the display.3. Press *tone/cancel to exit, or press memory again andthe new CID record replaces the old CID record in thatmemory location. You will hear a confirmation tone.DELETING RECORDSUse the channel/delete button to erase the record currentlyshown in the display or all records.DELETING THE CURRENT RECORD1. Make sure the phone is OFF (not in TALK mode).2. Use the CID/VOL (-) arrow or CID/VOL (+) arrow button todisplay the desired Caller ID record.3. Press channel/delete. The display shows DELETE?4. Press channel/delete again to erase the record. You willhear a confirmation tone. The display shows DELETED.Then the next Caller ID record shows in the display.DELETING ALL RECORDS1. Make sure the phone is OFF (not in TALK mode).2. Use the CID/VOL (-) arrow or CID/VOL (+) arrow button todisplay any Caller ID record.3. Press and hold channel/delete button until the unitbeeps and DELETE ALL? shows in the display.4. Press channel/delete again to erase all records. You will hear aconfirmation tone, and the display shows NO CALLS.DIALING A CALLER ID NUMBER1. Make sure the phone is OFF (not in TALK mode).2. Use the CID/VOL (-) arrow or CID/VOL (+) arrow button todisplay the desired Caller ID record.3. Press TALK/callback button. The number dialsautomatically.CHANGING THE CID NUMBER FORMATThe format button lets you change the format of thedisplayed CID number. The available formats are as follows.7-digit 7-digit telephone number.10-digit 3-digit area code + 7-digit telephone number.11-digit long distance code “1” + 3-digit area code +7-digit telephone number.1. Use the CID/VOL (-) arrow or CID/VOL (+) arrow button toscroll to the number you want to call back.2. If the number will not dial as shown, press the formatbutton. Repeat if necessary, until the correct number ofdigits are shown.3. Press TALK/callback button. The number dialsautomatically.MEMORYStore up to 10 24-digit numbers in memory for quickdialing. This memory feature is in addition to the 40 CallerID records that can be stored in the Caller ID memory log.STORING A NAME AND NUMBER INMEMORY1. Make sure the phone is OFF (not in TALK mode).2. Press the memory button.3. Press the desired memory location (0 through 9).4. Press the memory button again. The display showsENTER  NAME (up to 15 characters).NOTE: If you don't want to enter the name, skip step 5.For example, to enter the name Bill Smith, press the twokey twice for the letter B, press the four key three timesfor the letter I, and press the five key three times for theletter L. After one second, press the five key three timesagain for the second letter L and press the one key toinsert a space between the letter L and S. The numbers dial automatically.IMPORTANT: If you make test calls to emergencynumbers stored in memory, remain on the line andbriefly explain the reason for the call to the dispatcher.Also, it’s a good idea to make these calls in off-peakhours, such as early morning or late evening.INSERTING A PAUSE IN THE DIALINGSEQUENCEWhen storing information in memory, press the # pausebutton twice within one second to insert a delay in thedialing sequence of a stored telephone number when apause is needed to wait for a dial tone (for example afteryou dial 9 for an outside line, or to wait for a computeraccess tone). PAUSE shows on the display as a “P. “ Eachpause counts as 1 digit in the dialing sequence.REVIEWING AND DELETING STOREDNUMBERS1. Press memory, then use the CID/VOL (-) arrow or CID/VOL (+) arrow button to view the entry.2. While the entry is displayed, press channel/delete buttonto delete the entry. The display shows DELETE?3. Press channel/delete again to delete the entry. DELETEDshows in the display.CHAIN DIALING FROM MEMORYUse this feature to make calls which require a sequence ofnumbers such as using  a calling card for a frequentlycalled long distance number. Basically, you dial each partof the sequence from memory. At the next access tone, press memory and then 9.TIP: Wait for the access tones between pressing thememory button, or your call might not go through.HEADSET AND BELT CLIPOPERATIONCONNECTINGAN OPTIONALHEADSET TOTHE HANDSETFor hands freeconversation, connectthe headset (optional)to the HEADSET jackas shown. The handsetreceiver andmicrophone aredisabled when theheadset is connected.TIP: To order a headset, please refer to the accessoryorder form at the end of this user’s guide.Adjust the headset torest comfortably on topof your head and overyour ear. Move themicrophone toapproximately 2 to 3inches from your mouth.• Press the TALK buttonto answer or place acall before using the headset.CONNECTING THE BELT CLIPThere are two slots, one on each side of the handset.• Attach the belt clip by inserting the sides of the belt clipinto the slots. Snap the ends of the belt clip into place.CHANGING THE BATTERYMake sure the telephone is OFF beforeyou replace battery.1. Remove the battery compartmentdoor.2. Disconnect the battery plug from thejack in the handset batterycompartment and remove the batterypack.3. Insert the new battery pack andconnect the cord into the jack insidethe handset.4. Put the battery compartment doorback on.5. Place handset in the base to charge. Allow the handsetbattery to properly charge (for 12 hours) prior to first useor when you install a new battery pack. If you do notproperly charge the phone, battery performance will becompromised.CAUTION: To reduce the risk of fire or personalinjury, use only the battery.BATTERY SAFETY PRECAUTIONS• Do not burn, disassemble, mutilate, or puncture. Likeother batteries of this type, toxic materials could bereleased which can cause injury.• To reduce the risk of fire or personal injury, use only thebattery listed in the User’s Guide.• Keep batteries out of the reach of children.• Remove batteries if storing over 30 days.GENERAL PRODUCT CARETo keep your telephone working and looking good, followthese guidelines:• Avoid putting the phone near heating appliances anddevices that generate electrical noise (for example,motors or fluorescent lamps).• DO NOT expose to direct sunlight or moisture.• Avoid dropping and other rough treatment to the phone.• Clean with a soft cloth.• Never use a strong cleaning agent or abrasive powderbecause this will damage the finish.• Retain the original packaging in case you need to shipthe phone at a later date.CAUSES OF POOR RECEPTION• Aluminum siding.• Foil backing on insulation.• Heating ducts and other metal construction can shieldradio signals.• You’re too close to appliances such as microwaves,stoves, computers, etc.• Atmospheric conditions, such as strong storms.• Base is installed in the basement or lower floor ofthe house.• Base is plugged into an AC outlet with otherelectronic devices.• Baby monitor is using the same frequency.• Handset battery is low.• You’re out of range of the base.DISPLAY MESSAGESThe following indicators show the status of a message orof the unit.INCOMPLETE DATA Caller information has beeninterrupted during transmission orthe phone line is excessively noisy.ENTER NAME Prompt telling you to enter thename for one of the 10 memorylocations.ENTER TEL NUMBR Prompt telling you to enter thetelephone number for one of the10 memory locations.DELETE? Prompt asking if you want to eraseCaller ID records or one of the 10numbers stored in the phone’soutgoing memory.DELETE ALL? Prompt asking if you want to eraseall Caller ID records.DELETED Prompt confirming the Caller ID /Memory record is erased.END OF LIST Indicates that there is noadditional information in Caller IDmemory.NEW Indicates call or calls have notbeen reviewed.UNKNOWN NAME/ The incoming call is fromCALLER/NUMBER an area not serviced by  Caller IDor the information was not sent.PAGING Someone has pressed the pagebutton on the base.BLOCKED CALL The person is calling from anumber that has been blockedfrom transmission.BLOCKED NAME The person’s name is blockedfrom transmission.REPT Repeat call message. Indicatesthat a new call from the samenumber was received more thanonce.NO DATA No Caller ID information wasreceived.EMPTY Indicates a memory location isvacant.NO CALLS Indicates no CID records havebeen stored.MESSAGE WAITING Indicates a message is available.HANDSET SOUND SIGNALSSignal MeaningA long warbling tone Signals an incoming call(with ringer on)Two long beeps Confirmation ToneOne short and one long beep Page signalOne short beep Low battery warningevery seven secondsTROUBLESHOOTING TIPSCALLER IDNo Display• Is battery fully charged? Try replacing the battery. Makesure the battery is properly installed and connected.• If you are using AC power, make sure that the unit isconnected to a non-switched electrical outlet.Disconnect the unit from the plug and plug it in again.• Did you order Caller ID service from your localtelephone company?Caller ID Error Message• The unit displays this message if it detects anythingother than valid Caller ID information during the silentperiod after the first ring. This message indicates thepresence of noise on the line.TELEPHONENo dial tone• Check installation:— Is the base power cord connected to a working outlet?— Is the telephone line cord connected to the base unitand the wall jack?• Disconnect the base from the wall jack and connectanother phone to the same jack. If there is no dial tonein the second phone, the problem might be your wiringor local service.• Is the handset out of range of the base?• Make sure the battery is properly charged (12 hours).• Is the battery pack installed correctly?• Did the handset beep when you pressed the TALK/callback button? Did the display indicator turn on? Thebattery may need to be charged.Dial tone is OK, but can't dial out • Make sure the tone/pulse setting is programmedcorrectly.Handset does not ring• Make sure the ringer switch on the handset is turnedto ON.• You may have too many extension phones on your line.Try unplugging some phones.• See solutions for “No dial tone.”You experience static, noise, or fading in and out• Change channels• Is handset out of range? Move closer to the base.• Does the base need to be relocated?• Charge battery.• Make sure base is not plugged into an outlet withanother household appliance.Unit beeps• Place handset in base for 20 seconds to reset thesecurity code.
