Maintaining Safe Use of andAccess to Your PhoneDo Not Rely on Your Phone for Emergency CallsMobile phones operate using radio signals, which cannotguarantee connection in all conditions. Therefore you shouldnever rely solely upon any mobile phone foressentialcommunication (e.g., medical emergencies). Emergency callsmay not be possible on all cellularnetworks or when certainnetwork services or mobile phone features are in use. Checkwith yourlocal service provider for details.Using Your Phone While DrivingTalking on your phone while driving (or operating the phonewithout a hands-free device) is prohibited in some jurisdictions.Laws vary as to specific restrictions. Remember that safetyalways comes first.Following Safety GuidelinesTo operate yourphone safely and efficiently, always follow anyspecial regulations in a given area. Turn yourphone off in areaswhere use is forbidden or when it may cause interference ordanger.Using Your Phone NearOther Electronic DevicesMost modern electronic equipment is shielded from radiofrequency (RF) signals. However, RF signals from wirelessphones may affect inadequately shielded electronic equipment.RF signals may affect improperly installed orinadequatelyshielded electronic operating systems or entertainment systemsin motor vehicles. Check with the manufacturer or theirrepresentative to determine if these systems are adequatelyshielded from external RFsignals. Also check with themanufacturer regarding any equipment that has been added toyour vehicle.Consult the manufacturer of any personal medical devices, suchas pacemakers and hearing aids, to determine if they areadequately shielded from external RFsignals.Turning Off Your Phone Before FlyingTurn off your phone before boarding any aircraft. To preventpossible interference with aircraft systems, the U.S. FederalAviation Administration (FAA) regulations require you to havepermission from a crew member to use your phone while theplane is on the ground. To prevent any risk of interference, FCCregulations prohibit using your phone while the plane is in the air.Turning Off Your Phone in Dangerous AreasTo avoid interfering with blasting operations, turn your phone offNote Always turn off the phone in healthcare facilities, andrequest permission before using the phone nearmedical equipment.Tip Purchase an optional hands-free accessory at yourlocal Sprint Store, or call Sprint at 1-800-974-2221 orbydialing #222 on your phone.Section 4A. when in a blasting area or in otherareas with signs indicatingtwo-way radios should be turned off. Construction crews oftenuse remote-control RFdevices to set off explosives.Turn yourphone off when you’re in any area that has a potentiallyexplosive atmosphere. Although it’s rare, your phone andaccessories could generate sparks. Sparks can cause anexplosion orfire, resulting in bodily injury oreven death. Theseareas are often, but not always, clearly marked. They include:ⅷFueling areas such as gas stations.ⅷBelow deck on boats.ⅷFuel or chemical transfer or storage facilities.ⅷAreas where the aircontains chemicals or particles suchas grain, dust, ormetal powders.ⅷAny otherarea where you would normally be advised toturn off your vehicle’s engine.Restricting Children’s Access to Your PhoneYour phone is not a toy. Do not allow children to play with it asthey could hurt themselves and others, damage the phone ormake calls that increase your Sprint invoice.Using Your Phone With a HearingAid DeviceA number of Sprint phones have been tested forhearing aiddevice compatibility. When some wireless phones are used withcertain hearing devices (including hearing aids and cochlearimplants), users may detect a noise which can interfere with theeffectiveness of the hearing device. Some hearing devices are more immune than others to thisinterference noise, and phones also vary in the amount ofinterference noise they may generate. ANSI standard C63.19 wasdeveloped to provide a standardized means of measuring bothwireless phone and hearing devices to determine usability ratingcategories for both.Ratings have been developed formobile phones to assist hearingdevice users find phones that may be compatible with theirhearing device. Not all phones have been rated for compatibilitywith hearing devices. Phones that have been rated have a labellocated on the box. Your KATANA®®LX by SANYO has M4 and T4 ratings. These ratings are not guarantees. Results will vary depending onthe user’s hearing device and individual type and degree ofhearing loss. If a hearing device is particularly vulnerable tointerference noise; even a phone with a higherrating may stillcause unacceptable noise levels in the hearing device. Trying outthe phone with your hearing device is the best way to evaluate it foryour personal needs.Note Never transport or store flammable gas, flammableliquids, or explosives in the compartment of yourvehicle that contains your phone oraccessories.140 Section 4A. M-Ratings: Phones rated M3 or M4 meet FCC requirements forhearing aid compatibility and are likely to generate lessinterference to hearing devices than unrated phones. (M4 is thebetter/higher of the two ratings.)T-Ratings: Phones rated T3 orT4 meet FCC requirements and arelikely to be more usable with a hearing device’s telecoil (“T Switch”or “Telephone Switch”) than unrated phones. (T4 is thebetter/higher of the two ratings. Note that not all hearing deviceshave telecoils in them.)Hearing aid devices may also be measured forimmunity tointerference noise from wireless phones and should have ratingssimilar to phones. Ask your hearing healthcare professional fortherating of your hearing aid. Add the rating of your hearing aid andyour phone to determine probable usability:ⅷAny combined rating equal to or greater than six offersexcellent use.ⅷAny combined rating equal to five is considered normaluse.ⅷAny combined rating equal to four is considered usable. Thus, if you pairan M3 hearing aid with an M3 phone, you will havea combined rating of six for“excellent use.”This is synonymous forTratings.Sprint further suggests you experiment with multiple phones (eventhose not labeled M3/T3 or M4/T4) while in the store to find theone that works best with your hearing aid device. Should youexperience interference or find the quality of service unsatisfactoryafter purchasing your phone, promptly return it to the store within30 days of purchase. With the Sprint 30-day Risk-Free Guarantee, you may return the phone within 30 days of purchase fora fullrefund.More information about hearing aid compatibility may be found at:www.fcc.gov, www.fda.gov, and www.accesswireless.org.Getting the Best Hearing DeviceExperience With YourPhoneTo further minimize interference:ⅷSet the phone’s display and keypad backlight settings toensure the minimum time interval:To change the Backlight setting:1. Caring for the BatteryProtecting Your BatteryThe guidelines listed below help you get the most out of yourbattery’s performance.ⅷRecently there have been some public reports of wirelessphone batteries overheating, catching fire or exploding. Itappears that many, if not all, of these reports involvecounterfeit or inexpensive, aftermarket-brand batterieswith unknown or questionable manufacturing standards.Sprint is not aware of similar problems with Sprint phonesresulting from the proper use of batteries and accessoriesapproved by Sprint or the manufacturer of your phone.Use only Sprint-approved ormanufacturer-approvedbatteries and accessories found at Sprint Stores orthrough your phone’s manufacturer, or call 1-866-343-1114 to order. They’re also available at www.sprint.com —click Accessories. Buying the right batteries andaccessories is the best way to ensure they’re genuine and safe.ⅷIn order to avoid damage, charge the battery only intemperatures that range from 32° Fto 113° F (0° C to 45° C).ⅷDon’t use the battery charger in direct sunlight orin highhumidity areas, such as the bathroom.ⅷNever dispose of the battery by incineration.ⅷKeep the metal contacts on top of the battery clean.ⅷDon’t attempt to disassemble or short-circuit the battery.ⅷThe battery may need recharging if it has not been usedfor a long period of time.ⅷIt’s best to replace the battery when it no longer providesacceptable performance. It can be recharged hundredsof times before it needs replacing.ⅷDon’t store the battery in high temperature areas for longperiods of time. It’s best to follow these storage rules:Less than one month:-4° F to 140° F (-20° C to 60° C)More than one month:-4° F to 113° F (-20° C to 45° C)Disposal of Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) BatteriesDo not handle a damaged or leaking Li-Ion battery as you canbe burned. For safe disposal options of your Li-Ion batteries, contact yournearest Sprint authorized service center.Special Note:Be sure to dispose of your battery properly. Radio Frequency (RF)EnergyUnderstanding How Your Phone OperatesYour phone is basically a radio transmitter and receiver. When it’sturned on, it receives and transmits radio frequency (RF) signals. When you use your phone, the system handling your callcontrols the power level. This power can range from 0.006 watt to0.2 watt in digital mode.Knowing Radio Frequency SafetyThe design of yourphone complies with updated NCRPstandards described below. In 1991–92, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)joined in updating ANSI’s 1982 standard forsafety levels withrespect to human exposure to RF signals. More than 120scientists, engineers and physicians from universities, government health agencies and industries developed thisupdated standard afterreviewing the available body of research. In 1993, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)adopted this updated standard in a regulation. In August 1996,the FCC adopted hybrid standard consisting of the existingANSI/IEEE standard and the guidelines published by theNational Council of Radiation Protection and Measurements(NCRP).Body-Worn OperationTo maintain compliance with FCC RF exposure guidelines, if youwear a handset on your body, use the Sprint supplied orapproved carrying case, holsteror other body-worn accessory. Ifyou do not use a body-worn accessory, ensure the antenna is atleast 1.5 centimeters from your body when transmitting. Use ofnon-Sprint-approved accessories may violate FCC RF exposureguidelines. For more information about RFexposure, visit the FCC Web siteat www.fcc.gov. Specific Absorption Rates (SAR)for WirelessPhonesThe SAR is a value that corresponds to the relative amount of RFenergy absorbed in the head of a userof a wireless handset. The SAR value of a phone is the result of an extensive testing, measuring and calculation process. It does not represent howmuch RF the phone emits. All phone models are tested at theirhighest value in strict laboratory settings. But when in operation, the SAR of a phone can be substantially less than the levelreported to the FCC. This is because of a variety of factorsincluding its proximity to a base station antenna, phone designand other factors. What is important to remember is that eachphone meets strict federal guidelines. Variations in SARs do notrepresent a variation in safety. All phones must meet the federal standard, which incorporates asubstantial margin of safety. As stated above, variations in SARvalues between different model phones do not mean variationsin safety. SAR values at or below the federal standard of 1.6 W/kgare considered safe foruse by the public. Section 4A.
