6Unpacking and Examining Your OvenCarefully remove oven from carton. Be sure to remove the turntable support and place it in the oven. SAVE THECARTON AS IT MAY MAKE INSTALLATION EASIER.Remove the feature sticker from the outside of the door, if there is one.DO NOT REMOVE THE WAVEGUIDE COVER, which is located on the ceiling inthe oven cavity. Check to see that there are Installation Instructions, Wall Template,Top Template and RK-230 Charcoal Filter, which is used when recirculating ischosen. Read enclosures and SAVE the Operation Manual.Check the oven for any damage, such as misaligned or bent door, damaged doorseals and sealing surfaces, broken or loose door hinges and latches and dents insidethe cavity or on the door. If there is any damage, do not operate the oven and contactyour dealer or SHARP AUTHORIZED SERVICER.See Installation Instructions for more details.This appliance must be grounded. This oven is equipped with a cord having a grounding wire with a grounding plug.It must be plugged into a wall receptacle that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with the NationalElectrical Code and local codes and ordinances. 7INFORMATION YOU NEED TO KNOWABOUT YOUR OVENWhen using the oven at power levels below 100%,you may hear the magnetron cycling on and off.Condensation is a normal part of microwave cooking.Room humidity and the moisture in food willinfluence the amount of moisture that condenses inthe oven. Generally, covered foods will not cause asmuch condensation as uncovered ones. Vents on theoven back must not be blocked.The oven is for food preparation only. It should notbe used to dry clothes or newspapers.Your oven is rated 1100 watts by using the IEC TestProcedure. In using recipes or package directions,check food a minute or two before the minimum timeand add time accordingly.This Operation Manual is valuable: read it carefullyand always save it for reference.A good microwave cookbook is a valuable asset.Check it for microwave cooking principles,techniques, hints and recipes. See pages 37 and 38for ordering the Ultimate Accessory, the SHARPCAROUSEL MICROWAVE COOKBOOK.NEVER use the oven without the turntable andsupport nor turn the turntable over so that a large dishcould be placed in the oven. The turntable will turnboth clockwise and counterclockwise. See page 30for complete instructions.ALWAYS have food in the oven when it is on toabsorb the microwave energy.ABOUT FOODDON'TDO• Puncture egg yolks before cooking toprevent “explosion”.• Pierce skins of potatoes, apples, squash,hot dogs and sausages so that steam es-capes.• Use specially bagged popcorn for themicrowave oven.• Listen while popping corn for the pop-ping to slow to 1 or 2 seconds or usespecial Popcorn pad.• Transfer baby food to small dish andheat carefully, stirring often. 8INFORMATION YOU NEED TO KNOWABOUT UTENSILS AND COVERINGSChildren below the age of 7 should use the micro-wave oven with a supervising person very near tothem. Between the ages of 7 and 12, the supervisingperson should be in the same room.The child must be able to reach the oven comfort-ably; if not, he/she should stand on a sturdy stool.At no time should anyone be allowed to lean or swingon the oven door.ABOUT CHILDREN AND THE MICROWAVEChildren should be taught all safety precautions: usepotholders, remove coverings carefully, pay specialattention to packages that crisp food because they maybe extra hot.Don’t assume that because a child has mastered onecooking skill he/she can cook everything.Children need to learn that the microwave oven isnot a toy. See page 32 for Child Lock feature.The following coverings are ideal:• Paper towels are good for covering foods forreheating and absorbing fat while cooking bacon.• Wax paper can be used for cooking and reheating.• Plastic wrap that is specially marked for microwaveuse can be used for cooking and reheating. DO NOTallow plastic wrap to touch food. Vent so steamcan escape.• Lids that are microwave-safe are a good choicebecause heat is kept near the food to hasten cooking.• Oven cooking bags are good for large meats or foodsthat need tenderizing. DO NOT use metal twist ties.Remember to slit bag so steam can escape.How to use aluminum foil in your microwave oven:• Small flat pieces of aluminum foil placed smoothlyon the food can be used to shield areas that areeither defrosting or cooking too quickly.• Foil should not come closer than one inch to anysurface of the oven.Should you have questions about utensils orcoverings, check a good microwave cookbook orfollow recipe suggestions.ACCESSORIES There are many microwaveaccessories available for purchase. Evaluate carefullybefore you purchase so that they meet your needs. Amicrowave-safe thermometer will assist you indetermining correct doneness and assure you thatfoods have been cooked to safe temperatures.  Sharpis not responsible for any damage to the oven whenaccessories are used.It is not necessary to buy all new cookware. Manypieces already in your kitchen can be used success-fully in your new microwave oven.Use these utensils for safe microwave cooking andreheating:• glass ceramic (Pyroceram®), such asCorningware®.• heat-resistant glass (Pyrex®)• microwave-safe plastics (some microwave-safe plastics are not suitable for cooking foodswith high fat and sugar content.)• paper plates• microwave-safe pottery, stoneware andporcelain• browning dish (Do not exceed recommendedpreheating time. Follow manufacturer'sdirections.)These items can be used for short time reheatingof foods that have little fat or sugar in them:• wood, straw, wicker DO NOT USE• metal pans and bakeware• dishes with metallic trim• non-heat-resistant glass• non-microwave-safe plastics (margarine tubs)• recycled paper products• brown paper bags• food storage bags• metal twist-tiesShould you wish to check if a dish is safe for micro-waving, place the empty dish in the oven andmicrowave on 100% power for 30 seconds. A dishwhich becomes very hot should not be used.
9INFORMATION YOU NEED TO KNOWABOUT MICROWAVE COOKING• Arrange food carefully. Place thickest areas towardoutside of dish.• Watch cooking time. Cook for the shortest amountof time indicated and add more as needed. Foodsseverely overcooked can smoke or ignite.• Cover foods while cooking. Check recipe or cook-book for suggestions: paper towels, wax paper,microwave plastic wrap or a lid. Covers preventspattering and help foods to cook evenly.• Shield with small flat pieces of aluminum foil anythin areas of meats or poultry to prevent overcook-ing before dense, thick areas are cooked thoroughly.• Stir foods from outside to center of dish once ortwice during cooking, if possible.• Turn foods over once during microwaving to speedcooking of such foods as chicken and hamburgers.Large items like roasts must be turned over atleast once.... for fresh pork, ground meat,boneless white poultry, fish,seafood, egg dishes andfrozen prepared food.... for leftover, ready-to-reheatrefrigerated, and deli andcarry-out “fresh” food.... white meat of poultry.... dark meat of poultry.160°F• Check foods to see that they are cooked to theUnited States Department of Agriculture’s recom-mended temperatures:ABOUT SAFETY• Always use potholders to prevent burns whenhandling utensils that are in contact with hot food.Enough heat from the food can transfer throughutensils to cause skin burns.• Avoid steam burns by directing steam away fromthe face and hands. Slowly lift the farthest edge ofa dish’s covering and carefully open popcorn andoven cooking bags away from the face.• Stay near the oven while it’s in use and check cook-ing progress frequently so that there is no chanceof overcooking food.• NEVER use the cavity for storing cookbooks orother items.• Select, store and handle food carefully to preserveits high quality and minimize the spread offoodborne bacteria.• Keep waveguide cover clean. Food residue cancause arcing and/or fires.• Use care when removing items from the oven sothat the utensil, your clothes or accessories do nottouch the safety door latches.To test for doneness, insert a meat thermometer in athick or dense area away from fat or bone. NEVERleave the thermometer in food during cooking,unless it is approved for microwave oven use.TEMP• Rearrange foods like meatballs halfway throughcooking both from top to bottom and from the centerof the dish to the outside.• Add standing time. Remove food from oven andstir, if possible. Cover for standing time whichallows the food to finish cooking withoutovercooking.• Check for doneness. It also shows Minute Plus+, where bytouching the screen the next screen appears, making it easy toselect one of twelve commonly used times. 15MULTIPLE SEQUENCE COOKINGThe oven can be programmed for up to four automatic cooking sequences, switching from one power levelsetting to another automatically. Sometimes cooking directions tell you to start on one power level and thenchange to a different power level. Your oven can do this automatically.• Suppose you want to cook roast beef for 5 minutes at 70% power and then continue to cook for 30 minutes at50% power:MANUAL OPERATIONVARIABLE POWER COOKINGThere are eleven preset power levels. To change the power level, touch Power Level after entering the cookingtime. 16If the food that you wish to defrost is not listedon the COMPU DEFROST CHART or is above orbelow the limits in the AMOUNT column on theCOMPU DEFROST CHART, you need to defrostmanually.You can defrost any frozen food, either raw orpreviously cooked, by using 30% power. Followthe exact procedure found on page 15. Estimatedefrosting time, enter it. Then touch Power Level onthe Touch Screen and select 30%.For either raw or previously cooked frozen food therule of thumb is approximately four minutes perpound. For example, defrost four minutes for onepound of frozen spaghetti sauce.Always stop the oven periodically to remove orseparate the portions that are defrosted. If food isnot defrosted at the end of the estimated defrostingtime, program the oven in one minute increments on30% power until totally defrosted.When using plastic containers from the freezer,defrost only long enough to remove from the plasticin order to place in a microwave-safe dish.MANUAL DEFROSTMANUAL OPERATIONONE TOUCH SENSORSharp's Sensor is a semi-conductor device that detectsthe vapor (moisture and humidity) emitted from thefood as it heats. The sensor adjusts the cooking timesand power level for various foods and quantities.Using Sensor Settings1. After oven is plugged in, wait two minutes beforeusing any Sensor setting.2. Be sure the exterior of the cooking container andthe interior of the oven are dry. Wipe off anymoisture with a dry cloth or paper towel.3.The oven works with foods at normal storagetemperature. 30For most cooking, the turntable should be on; howeverthe turntable can be turned off so that it does not rotatewhen extra large dishes, such as the popular 13 x 9 x 2glass utility casserole, are used. The casserole shouldbe placed on the turntable so that it is level.The display indicates when the turntable is off.Thedoor can be opened for checking food and theturntable will stay in the off position. After checking,close door and touch STARTAll special features can only be used with the turntableon. When the turntable is set in the off position, onlymanual operation can be used except for the Reheatfunction which can be used for both options.When cooking large quantities of food which cannotbe stirred, it is best to use a lower power level suchas 40% or 50%. You may speed cooking for largeamounts by programming 5 to 10 minutes on 100%power (HIGH) followed by the desired time onlower power. See page 15 for how to program multiplesequences. You may wish to reverse a large casseroleonce during cooking; simply open door, repositioncasserole, close door and touch START.• Suppose you want to turn the turntable off.TURNTABLE ON/OFFLIGHT OPTIONS• Suppose you want to turn the Auto Night Light on.USING THE RACKThe Rack allows several foods to be cooked orreheated at one time. However, for the best cookingand reheating, use the turntable on and the automaticfeatures.When using the Rack, set time and power levelmanually. Allow plenty of space around andbetween the dishes. Pay close attention to the cooking/reheating progress. Reposition the foods and reversethem from rack to turntable at least once during anycooking or reheating time. Using a lower power levelwill assist in better cooking/reheating uniformity.AVOID:• Storing the Rack in the oven when not in use.• Popping popcorn on the turntable with the Rack inthe oven.• Using any browning dish on the Rack.• Using special features with the Rack. 323.SOUND ADJUSTMENTThe oven offers a choice of Simple Beep, Melodyor No Sound. The oven comes set for Melody.Touch your choice on the screen and then pressSTART. The selected sound does not change even ifthe electrical power supply is interrupted. Note thateven when No Sound is chosen, there will be a soundfor the Kitchen Timer, if it was set.Reminder:An audible signal reminds you that cooking,defrosting or reheating has finished. The sound willrepeat every 60 seconds and continue for 30 minutesunless you touch STOP/CLEAR or open the door. Toset the Reminder, touch On on the End of CookingReminder screen. The setting does not change evenif the electrical power supply is interrupted. TheReminder cannot be set if “No Sound” was selected.4.CHILD LOCKThe Child Lock prevents unwanted oven operationsuch as by small children. The oven can be set sothat the control panel is deactivated or locked.5.VIDEO DEMOThe Video Demo is an automated “tour” throughmany of the features of the SMART & EASYTOUCH SCREEN oven. You may wish to observeit when the oven is new or when you are teachingfamily members how to use the oven. There are fiveshort segments in the Video Demo.6.SCREEN CONTRASTNormally there is no need to change the displaycontrast; however, should you wish to do so, touchLighter or Darker until the contrast is as desired.And then press START pad. Be cautious whentouching Lighter so that the display is always read-able. The selected contrast will not change even ifthe electrical power supply is interrupted.OTHER CONVENIENT FEATURESMINUTE PLUSMinute Plus allows you to cook for a minute at 100% power by simply touching the MINUTE PLUS pad. 35DOORWipe the window on both sides with a damp cloth toremove any spills or spatters. Metal parts will beeasier to maintain if wiped frequently with a dampcloth. Avoid the use of harsh abrasives.EXTERIORThe outside surface is painted. Clean the outside withmild soap and water; rinse and dry with a soft cloth.Do not use any type of household or abrasive cleaner.INTERIORCleaning is easy because no heat is generated to theinterior surfaces; therefore, there is no baking andsetting of spills or spattering. To clean the interiorsurfaces, wipe with a soft cloth and warm water. DONOT USE ABRASIVE OR HARSH CLEANERSOR SCOURING PADS. For heavier soil, use bakingsoda or a mild soap; rinse thoroughly with hot water.NEVER SPRAY OVEN CLEANERS DIRECTLYONTO ANY PART OF THE OVEN.WAVEGUIDE COVERCarefully wash any food particles from the waveguidecover located on the right side in the oven cavity. Donot remove the waveguide cover.ODOR REMOVALOccasionally, a cooking odor may remain in the oven.To remove, combine 1 cup water, grated peel and juiceof 1 lemon and several whole cloves in a 2 cup glassmeasuring cup. Boil for several minutes using 100%power. Allow to set in oven until cool. Wipe interiorwith a soft cloth.CONTROL PANELCare should be taken in cleaning the control panel. Ifthe control panel becomes soiled, open the oven doorbefore cleaning. Wipe the panel with a clothdampened slightly with water only. Dry with a softcloth. Do not scrub or use any sort of chemicalcleaners. Close door and touch STOP/CLEAR.TOUCH SCREENWipe the touch screen with a damp cloth and thendry with a soft cloth. Do not allow soil to accumulateon the touch screen.CLEANING AND CARETURNTABLE / TURNTABLESUPPORTThe turntable and turntable support can be removedfor easy cleaning. Wash them in mild, sudsy water;for stubborn stains use a mild cleanser and scouringsponge as described above. They are also dishwasher-proof. Use upper rack of dishwasher. The turntablemotor shaft is not sealed, so excess water or spillsshould be wiped up immediately.Turntable Turntable SupportGREASE FILTERSFilters should be cleaned at least once a month. Neveroperate the fan or oven without the filters in place.1. Pull down slightly on the tab toward the front ofthe oven and remove the filter. Repeat for the otherfilter.2. Soak the filters in a sink or dish pan filled withhot water and detergent. DO NOT use ammonia orother alkali; they will react with the filter materialand darken it.3.
