About INSTEON Micro Dimmer
Congratulations on your purchase of the INSTEON® Micro
Dimmer! This compact dimmer module wires in behind an existing
wall switch to give you fully dimmable—and completely hidden—
remote control over compatible lights.
Note: Installation should only be performed by a qualified
electrician or a homeowner who is familiar and comfortable with
electrical circuitry. If you have questions, consult an electrician or
call the INSTEON Support Line at 800-762-7845.

What’s Needed
- Flathead screwdriver - Philips screwdriver - Wire cutter/stripper - Voltage meter
Installing INSTEON Micro Dimmer (Dual Momentary Switch)
1) Before installing, write down Micro Dimmer’s INSTEON I.D. (on sticker) for future reference.
2) Turn off breaker/fuse1 and verify that the power is off.
3) Remove wallplate and unscrew existing switch.
4) Gently pull switch out of wall and disconnect wires.2
5) After ensuring that the wires are not touching, turn breaker back on.
6) Use a voltage meter to identify the fixture’s Line, Load and Neutral wires.
7) Turn off breaker again.
8) Connect Micro Dimmer wires as follows:
Micro Dimmer House
Terminal #1 Line (100-277VAC)
Terminal #2 Load (light, fan, etc.)
Terminal #3 Neutral
Terminal #4 Neutral
Micro Dimmer Switch
Yellow wire Momentary on/brighten
Purple wire Momentary off/dim
9) Turn breaker back on.
Connected load will turn on and Micro Dimmer’s LED will turn on green.
10) Test connection by tapping Micro Dimmer’s on/off buttons.
Connected load will turn on and off and Micro Dimmer’s LED will turn green (on) and red (off).
1 If multi-gang box, turn off all breakers/fuses that may be supplying power to the box.
2 If the wires cannot be detached, cut wires where they enter the switch and strip ½” of insulation off the ends.

11) If you are planning to manually link Micro Dimmer to any INSTEON controllers, do so now (see Adding Micro
Dimmer as an INSTEON Responder below).
12) Turn breaker off.
13) Place Micro Dimmer in rear of wall box.
14) Remount switch in wall box.
15) Turn breaker back on.
Connected load will turn on at its previous state (prior to turning off breaker).
16) Test installation by tapping switch on and off.
Connected load will turn on and off.
17) Reinstall wallplate.
Installing INSTEON Micro Dimmer (Single Momentary Switch)
1) Before installing, write down Micro Dimmer’s INSTEON I.D. (on sticker) for future reference.
2) Turn off breaker/fuse1 and verify that the power is off.
3) Remove wallplate and unscrew existing switch.
4) Gently pull switch out of wall and disconnect wires.2
5) After ensuring that the wires are not touching, turn breaker back on.
6) Use a voltage meter to identify the fixture’s Line, Load and Neutral wires.
7) Turn off breaker again.
8) Connect Micro Dimmer wires as follows:

Micro Dimmer Switch

Installing INSTEON Micro Dimmer (Behind Wall Outlet/Socket)
1) Before installing, write down Micro Dimmer’s INSTEON I.D. (on sticker) for future reference.
2) Turn off breaker/fuse1 and verify that the power is off.
3) Remove wallplate and unscrew existing outlet.
4) Gently pull switch out of wall and disconnect wires.2
5) After ensuring that the wires are not touching, turn breaker back on.
6) Use a voltage meter to identify the fixture’s Line, Load and Neutral wires.
7) Turn off breaker again.
8) Connect Micro Dimmer wires as follows:
Micro Dimmer House
Terminal #1 Line (100-277VAC)
Terminal #2 Load (light, fan, etc.)
Terminal #3 Neutral
Terminal #4 Neutral
Micro Dimmer Switch
Yellow wire Not used – cap off
Purple wire Not used – cap off
9) Turn breaker back on.
Micro Dimmer’s LED will turn on green and outlet will be powered.
10) Test connection: plug a lamp into the outlet, then tap Micro Dimmer’s on/off buttons.
Lamp will turn on and off and Micro Dimmer’s LED will turn green (on) and red (off).
11) If you are planning to manually link Micro Dimmer to any INSTEON controllers, do so now (see Adding Micro
Dimmer as an INSTEON Responder below).
12) Turn breaker off.
13) Place Micro Dimmer in rear of wall box.
14) Remount outlet in wall box.
15) Turn breaker back on.
Outlet will be powered.
16) Reinstall wallplate.
Adding Micro Dimmer as an INSTEON Responder
We recommend using INSTEON SmartLinc and the free INSTEON iOS/Android smartphone and tablet app or home
automation software (such as HouseLinc) to add and monitor Micro Dimmer on your home network. You can also add
Micro Dimmer to your network manually by following the instructions below. Note: you must perform these steps
before reinstalling the wall switch.
1) Press and hold controller’s ON/scene button until it beeps.
Controller’s LED will start blinking green.
2) Adjust load connected to Micro Dimmer to desired brightness level.
3) Press and hold Micro Dimmer’s Set button until it double-beeps.
Controller will double-beep and its LED will stop blinking.
4) Test link by tapping controller’s ON/scene button on and off or pressing and holding to brighten/dim.
The load connected to Micro Dimmer will respond appropriately.

Adding Micro Dimmer as an INSTEON Controller
We recommend using INSTEON SmartLinc and the free INSTEON iOS/Android smartphone and tablet app or home
automation software (such as HouseLinc) to add and monitor Micro Dimmer on your home network. You can also add
Micro Dimmer to your network manually by following the instructions below. Note: you must perform these steps
before reinstalling the wall switch.
1) Press and hold Micro Dimmer’s Set button until it beeps.
Micro Dimmer’s LED will start blinking green.
2) Adjust responder to desired state.
3) Press and hold responder’s Set button until it double-beeps.
Micro Dimmer will double-beep and its LED will stop blinking.
4) Test link by tapping or pressing and holding Micro Dimmer’s paddle top and bottom to turn on/off or brighten/dim.
The responder will respond appropriately.

receiver.
