Products may contain small parts thatcould become detached and create a choking hazard.Power supply (Charger)Connect the charger to power sources as marked on the product.Do not use outdoors or in damp areas. Do not alter or subject thecord to damage or stress. Unplug the unit before cleaning it. Neveralter the plug. If it does not fit into the outlet, have a proper outletinstalled by an electrician. When a power supply is connectedthere is a small drain of power. To avoid this small energy waste,disconnect the power supply when the product is fully charged.3

Use of charging devices that are not Sony Ericsson branded maypose increased safety risks.BatteryNew or idle batteries can have short-term reduced capacity. Fullycharge the battery before initial use. Use for the intended purposeonly. Charge the battery in temperatures between +5°C(+41°F)and +45°C(+113°F). Do not put the battery into your mouth. Do notlet the battery contacts touch another metal object. Turn off theproduct before removing the battery. Performance depends ontemperatures, signal strength, usage patterns, features selectedand voice or data transmissions. Only Sony Ericsson servicepartners should remove or replace built-in batteries. Use ofbatteries that are not Sony Ericsson branded may pose increasedsafety risks. Replace the battery only with another Sony Ericssonbattery that has been qualified with the product per the standardIEEE-1725. Use of an unqualified battery may present a risk of fire,explosion, leakage or other hazard.Personal medical devicesMobile phones may affect implanted medical equipment. Reducerisk of interference by keeping a minimum distance of15 cm(6 inches) between the phone and the device. Use the phoneat your right ear. Do not carry the phone in your breast pocket.Turn off the phone if you suspect interference. For all medicaldevices, consult a physician and the manufacturer.DrivingSome vehicle manufacturers forbid the use of phones in theirvehicles unless a handsfree kit with an external antenna supportsthe installation. Check with the vehicle manufacturer'srepresentative to be sure that the mobile phone or Bluetoothhandsfree will not affect the electronic systems in the vehicle. Fullattention should be given to driving at all times and local laws andregulations restricting the use of wireless devices while drivingmust be observed.4

GPS/Location based functionsSome products provide GPS/Location based functions. Locationdetermining functionality is provided “As is” and “With all faults”.Sony Ericsson does not make any representation or warranty as tothe accuracy of such location information.Use of location-based information by the device may not beuninterrupted or error free and may additionally be dependent onnetwork service availability. Please note that functionality may bereduced or prevented in certain environments such as buildinginteriors or areas adjacent to buildings.Caution: Do not use GPS functionality in a manner which causesdistraction from driving.Emergency callsCalls cannot be guaranteed under all conditions. Never rely solelyupon mobile phones for essential communication. Calls may not bepossible in all areas, on all networks, or when certain networkservices and/or phone features are used.AntennaUse of antenna devices not marketed by Sony Ericsson coulddamage the phone, reduce performance, and produce SAR levelsabove the established limits. Do not cover the antenna with yourhand as this affects call quality, power levels and can shorten talkand standby times.Radio Frequency (RF) exposure and Specific AbsorptionRate (SAR)When the phone or Bluetooth handsfree is turned on, it emits lowlevels of radio frequency energy. International safety guidelineshave been developed through periodic and thorough evaluation ofscientific studies. These guidelines establish permitted levels ofradio wave exposure. The guidelines include a safety margindesigned to assure the safety of all persons and to account for anyvariations in measurements.Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is used to measure radiofrequency energy absorbed by the body when using a mobile5

phone. The SAR value is determined at the highest certified powerlevel in laboratory conditions, but because the phone is designedto use the minimum power necessary to access the chosennetwork, the actual SAR level can be well below this value. There isno proof of difference in safety based on difference in SAR value.Products with radio transmitters sold in the US must be certifiedby the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Whenrequired, tests are performed when the phone is placed at the earand when worn on the body. For body-worn operation, the phonehas been tested when positioned a minimum of 15 mm from thebody without any metal parts in the vicinity of the phone or whenproperly used with an appropriate Sony Ericsson accessory andworn on the body.For more information about SAR and radio frequency exposure,go to: www.sonyericsson.com/health.Flight modeBluetooth and WLAN functionality, if available in the device, can beenabled in Flight mode but may be prohibited onboard aircraft or inother areas where radio transmissions are prohibited. In suchenvironments, please seek proper authorisation before enablingBluetooth or WLAN functionality even in Flight mode.MalwareMalware (short for malicious software) is software that can harmthe mobile phone or other computers. Malware or harmfulapplications can include viruses, worms, spyware, and otherunwanted programs. While the device does employ securitymeasures to resist such efforts, Sony Ericsson does not warrant orrepresent that the device will be impervious to the introduction ofmalware. You can however reduce the risk of malware attacks byusing care when downloading content or accepting applications,refraining from opening or responding to messages from unknownsources, using trustworthy services to access the Internet, andonly downloading content to the mobile phone from known,reliable sources.6

AccessoriesUse only Sony Ericsson branded original accessories and certifiedservice partners. Sony Ericsson does not test third-partyaccessories. Accessories may influence RF exposure, radioperformance, loudness, electric safety and other areas. Third-party accessories and parts may pose a risk to your health orsafety or decrease performance.Accessible Solutions/Special NeedsIn the US, compatible Sony Ericsson phones may offercompatibility with TTY terminals (with use of necessary accessory).For more information call the Sony Ericsson Special Needs Centeron 877 878 1996 (TTY) or 877 207 2056 (voice), or go towww.sonyericsson-snc.com.Disposal of old electrical and electronic equipmentElectronic equipment and batteries should not be includedas household waste but should be left at an appropriate collectionpoint for recycling. This helps prevent potential negativeconsequences for the environment and human health. Check localregulations by contacting your local city office, your householdwaste disposal service, the shop where you purchased the productor calling a Sony Ericsson Contact Center. Do not attempt toremove internal batteries. Internal batteries shall be removed onlyby a waste treatment facility or trained service professional.Disposing of the batteryCheck local regulations or call a Sony Ericsson ContactCenter for information. Never use municipal waste.Memory cardIf the product comes complete with a removable memory card, it isgenerally compatible with the handset purchased but may not becompatible with other devices or the capabilities of their memorycards. Check other devices for compatibility before purchase oruse. If the product is equipped with a memory card reader, checkmemory card compatibility before purchase or use.7

Memory cards are generally formatted prior to shipping. Toreformat the memory card, use a compatible device. Do not usethe standard operating system format when formatting the memorycard on a PC. Protection of personal informationErase personal data before disposing of the product. To deletedata, perform a master reset. Sony Ericsson recommends that you useonly batteries and chargers approved by Sony Ericsson.Minor variations in display brightness and colour may occurbetween phones. There may be tiny bright or dark dots on thedisplay. These are called defective pixels and occur whenindividual dots have malfunctioned and can not be adjusted. Twodefective pixels are deemed acceptable.Minor variations in camera image appearance may occurbetween phones. This is nothing uncommon and is not regardedas a defective camera module.4. Since the cellular system on which the Product is to operate isprovided by a carrier independent from Sony Ericsson,Sony Ericsson will not be responsible for the operation,availability, coverage, services or range of that system.12

Sony Ericsson has not measured, and makes no representationabout, the body worn SAR levels when the phone is used with non-Ericsson or non-Sony Ericsson accessories.Consumer Update on Wireless PhonesSupplied by the U.S. Food and DrugAdministration (FDA) - Center for Devicesand Radiological HealthDo wireless phones pose a health hazard?The available scientific evidence does not show that any healthproblems are associated with using wireless phones. There is noproof, however, that wireless phones are absolutely safe. Wirelessphones emit low levels of radiofrequency energy (RF) in themicrowave range while being used. They also emit very low levelsof RF when in the stand-by mode. Whereas high levels of RF canproduce health effects (by heating tissue), exposure to low level RFthat does not produce heating effects causes no known adversehealth effects. Many studies of low level RF exposures have notfound any biological effects. Some studies have suggested thatsome biological effects may occur, but such findings have notbeen confirmed by additional research. In some cases, otherresearchers have had difficulty in reproducing those studies, or indetermining the reasons for inconsistent results.What is FDA’s role concerning the safety ofwireless phones?Under the law, FDA does not review the safety of radiation-emittingconsumer products such as wireless phones before they can besold, as it does with new drugs or medical devices. However, theagency has authority to take action if wireless phones are shown toemit radiofrequency energy (RF) at a level that is hazardous to theuser. In such a case, FDA could require the manufacturers ofwireless phones to notify users of the health hazard and to repair,15

replace or recall the phones so that the hazard no longer exists.Although the existing scientific data do not justify FDA regulatoryactions, FDA has urged the wireless phone industry to take anumber of steps, including the following:•Support needed research into possible biological effects of RF ofthe type emitted by wireless phones;•Design wireless phones in a way that minimizes any RF exposureto the user that is not necessary for device function; and•Cooperate in providing users of wireless phones with the bestpossible information on possible effects of wireless phone use onhuman health.FDA belongs to an interagency working group of thefederalagencies that have responsibility for different aspects of RF safetyto ensure coordinated efforts at the federal level. The followingagencies belong to this working group:•National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health•Environmental Protection Agency•Federal Communications Commission•Occupational Safety and Health Administration•National Telecommunications and Information•AdministrationThe National Institutes of Health participates in some interagencyworking group activities, as well. FDA shares regulatoryresponsibilities for wireless phones with the FederalCommunications Commission (FCC). All phones that are sold inthe United States must comply with FCC safety guidelines that limitRF exposure. FCC relies on FDA and other health agencies forsafety questions about wireless phones. FCC also regulates thebase stations that the wireless phone networks rely upon. Whilethese base stations operate at higher power than do the wirelessphones themselves, the RF exposures that people get from thesebase stations are typically thousands of times lower than thosethey can get from wireless phones. Base stations are thus not thesubject of the safety questions discussed in this document.16

What kinds of phones are the subject of thisupdate?The term wireless phone refers here to hand-held wireless phoneswith built-in antennas, often called “cell,” “mobile,” or “PCS”phones. These types of wireless phones can expose the user tomeasurable radiofrequency energy (RF) because of the shortdistance between the phone and the user’s head. These RFexposures are limited by Federal Communications Commissionsafety guidelines that were developed with the advice of FDA andother federal health and safety agencies. When the phone islocated at greater distances from the user, the exposure to RF isdrastically lower because a person's RF exposure decreasesrapidly with increasing distance from the source. The so-called“cordless phones,” which have a base unit connected to thetelephone wiring in a house, typically operate at far lower powerlevels, and thus produce RF exposures far below the FCC safetylimits.What are the results of the research donealready?The research done thus far has produced conflicting results, andmany studies have suffered from flaws in their research methods.Animal experiments investigating the effects of radiofrequencyenergy (RF) exposures characteristic of wireless phones haveyielded conflicting results that often cannot be repeated in otherlaboratories. A few animal studies, however, have suggested thatlow levels of RF could accelerate the development of cancer inlaboratory animals. However, many of the studies that showedincreased tumor development used animals that had beengenetically engineered or treated with cancer-causing chemicalsso as to be pre-disposed to develop cancer in the absence of RFexposure. Other studies exposed the animals to RF for up to 22hours per day. These conditions are not similar to the conditionsunder which people use wireless phones, so we don’t know withcertainty what the results of such studies mean for human health.17

Three large epidemiology studies have been published sinceDecember 2000. Between them, the studies investigated anypossible association between the use of wireless phones andprimary brain cancer, glioma, meningioma, or acoustic neuroma,tumors of the brain or salivary gland, leukemia, or other cancers.None of the studies demonstrated the existence of any harmfulhealth effects from wireless phone RF exposures. However, noneof the studies can answer questions about long-term exposures,since the average period of phone use in these studies was aroundthree years.Enter the title of your concept here.A combination of laboratory studies and epidemiological studies ofpeople actually using wireless phones would provide some of thedata that are needed. Lifetime animal exposure studies could becompleted in a few years. However, very large numbers of animalswould be needed to provide reliable proof of a cancer promotingeffect if one exists. Epidemiological studies can provide data thatis directly applicable to human populations, but 10 or more years’follow-up may be needed to provide answers about some healtheffects, such as cancer. This is because the interval between thetime of exposure to a cancer-causing agent and the time tumorsdevelop - if they do - may be many, many years. The interpretationof epidemiological studies is hampered by difficulties in measuringactual RF exposure during day-to-day use of wireless phones.Many factors affect this measurement, such as the angle at whichthe phone is held, or which model of phone is used.What is FDA doing to find out more aboutthe possible health effects of wirelessphone RF?FDA is working with the U.S. National Toxicology Program and withgroups of investigators around the world to ensure that highpriority animal studies are conducted to address importantquestions about the effects of exposure to radiofrequency energy18

(RF). FDA has been a leading participant in the World HealthOrganization International Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) Projectsince its inception in 1996. An influential result of this work hasbeen the development of a detailed agenda of research needs thathas driven the establishment of new research programs around theworld. The Project has also helped develop a series of publicinformation documents on EMF issues. FDA and the CellularTelecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA) have a formalCooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) todo research on wireless phone safety. FDA provides the scientificoversight, obtaining input from experts in government, industry,and academic organizations. CTIA-funded research is conductedthrough contracts to independent investigators. The initialresearch will include both laboratory studies and studies ofwireless phone users. The CRADA will also include a broadassessment of additional research needs in the context of thelatest research developments around the world.How can I find out how muchradiofrequency energy exposure I can getby using my wireless phone?All phones sold in the United States must comply with FederalCommunications Commission (FCC) guidelines that limitradiofrequency energy (RF) exposures. FCC established theseguidelines in consultation with FDA and the other federal healthand safety agencies. The FCC limit for RF exposure from wirelesstelephones is set at a Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) of 1.6 wattsper kilogram (1.6 W/kg). The FCC limit is consistent with the safetystandards developed by the Institute of Electrical and ElectronicEngineering (IEEE) and the National Council on RadiationProtection and Measurement. The standard, “Recommended Practice forDetermining the Spatial-Peak Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) inthe Human Body Due to Wireless Communications Devices:Experimental Techniques,” sets forth the first consistent testmethodology for measuring the rate at which RF is deposited in theheads of wireless phone users. The test method uses a tissue-simulating model of the human head. Standardized SAR testmethodology is expected to greatly improve the consistency ofmeasurements made at different laboratories on the same phone.SAR is the measurement of the amount of energy absorbed intissue, either by the whole body or a small part of the body. It ismeasured in watts/kg (or milliwatts/g) of matter. This measurementis used to determine whether a wireless phone complies withsafety guidelines.What steps can I take to reduce myexposure to radiofrequency energy from mywireless phone?If there is a risk from these products--and at this point we do notknow that there is--it is probably very small. But if you areconcerned about avoiding even potential risks, you can take a fewsimple steps to minimize your exposure to radiofrequency energy(RF). Reducing the time of wireless phone useand increasing the distance between the user and the RF sourcewill reduce RF exposure.Some groups sponsored by other national governments haveadvised that children be discouraged from using wireless phonesat all. For example, the government in the United Kingdomdistributed leaflets containing such a recommendation inDecember 2000. They noted that no evidence exists that using awireless phone causes brain tumors or other ill effects. Theirrecommendation to limit wireless phone use by children wasstrictly precautionary; it was not based on scientific evidence thatany health hazard exists.21

What about wireless phone interferencewith medical equipment?Radiofrequency energy (RF) from wireless phones can interact withsome electronic devices. For this reason, FDA helped develop adetailed test method to measure electromagnetic interference(EMI) of implanted cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators fromwireless telephones. This test method is now part of a standardsponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Medicalinstrumentation (AAMI). The final draft, a joint effort by FDA,medical device manufacturers, and many other groups, wascompleted in late 2000. This standard will allow manufacturers toensure that cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators are safe fromwireless phone EMI.FDA has tested hearing aids for interference from handheldwireless phones and helped develop a voluntary standardsponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers(IEEE). This standard specifies test methods and performancerequirements for hearing aids and wireless phones so that nointerference occurs when a person uses a “compatible” phone anda “compatible” hearing aid at the same time. This standard wasapproved by the IEEE in 2000.FDA continues to monitor the use of wireless phones for possibleinteractions with other medical devices. Should harmfulinterference be found to occur, FDA will conduct testing to assessthe interference and work to resolve the problem.22
