A. Kickback Safety Precautions!Warning!Kickback may occur when the noseor tip of the guide bar touches anobject, or when the wood closes inand pinches the saw chain in thecut. Tip contact in some cases maycause a lightning fast reverse reaction, kicking the guide bar upand back towards the operator.Pinching the saw chain along thetop of the guide bar may push theguide bar rapidly back towards theoperator. Either of these reactionsmay cause you to lose control of thesaw which could result in seriouspersonal injury.Section 5.12 of ANSI B 175.1-1991sets certain performance and design criteria related to chainsawkickback. STIHL has developed acolor code system using green andyellow to help you select a power-head, bar and chain combinationthat complies with the kickbackrequirements of the ANSI Standard.See the sections entitled "SafetyPrecautions" and "Specifications"of this manual.Do not rely exclusively upon the safety devices built into your saw.As a chainsaw user, you shouldtake several steps to keep your cutting jobs free from accident or injury.1. Keep a good firm grip on the saw with both hands, the righthand on the rear handle, and the left hand on the fronthandle, when the engine is run-ning. Use a firm grip withthumbs and fingers encirclingthe chainsaw handles.A firm grip will help you reducekickback and maintain controlof the saw. Don’t let go.3. Make sure the area in which youare cutting is free from obstruc-tions. Do not let the nose of theguide bar contact a log, branch,or any other obstruction whileyou are operating the saw.4. Cut at high engine speeds.5. Do not overreach or cut aboveshoulder height.6. Follow manufacturer’s sharpening and maintenance instructions for the saw chain.7. Only use replacement bars andchains specified by the manu-facturer or the equivalent.8. Reduced kickback bars and lowkickback chains are designedto reduce the risk of kickback injury. Ask your STIHL dealerabout these devices.B. Other Safety Precautions1. Do not operate a chainsaw withone hand!
