outofthesplitterduringoperation.Loglengthshouldbekeptto24”orless.

splitter.Itmayfalloffandendangervehiclesthatarefollowingyou.
• Besurejackstandisinthetravelpositionandcouplingsecure.Thismustalsobe
retractedsonottointerferewhiletowing.Retractkickstandbyremovingpin,
rotatingup,andreplacingpin.
• Neverexceed45MPHwhiletowingyoursplitter.Beextracautiouswhen
travelingoverroughterrain,especiallyoverrailroadtracks.
• Alwaysbecarefulwhilebackingyoursplitter.Youcouldjackknifeyourlog
splitterifnotcareful.
• Beforeusingsplitter,disconnectitfromtowvehicle.Alogcouldeasilybe
pushedforwardintothevehicle.

OPERATION
Intendeduse:Thislogsplitterisintendedanddesignedtoonlysplitwood.NEVERuse
foranyotherpurposes.DoingsocancauseinjuryorVOIDTHEWARRANTY.
ASSEMBLYINSTRUCTIONS
Thislogsplitterhasbeenpartiallyassembledatthefactory.Refertothedrawingsandpart
listsshoulditbecomenecessarytodisassembletheunitforrepairorreplacementofparts.
Inspectallcomponentsfordamage.
WARNING:Exerciseextremecaution,aspartsareveryheavy.Sufficientpersonsor
mechanicalhandlingequipmentshouldbeused.
IMPORTANT:Thisunitisshippedwithoilbutwithoutgasolineintheengine.After
assembly,seeseparateEngineManualforproperfuelandoilrecommendations.
1. GeneralAssembly:Removetop,sidesandendsofcrate.Placecratepanelsaside
toavoidpuncturingtires.Removetongueassemblyfromtop.
2. Carefullysetthebeampre-assemblyaside.
3. Attachtonguetotank/mountplatesusingtwoboltsandnuts.Becertainhardware
issecure.(SeeAssemblyFigure1)
4. Removetank/engineassemblyfrombaseofcrateanddiscardbanding.
5. FenderAssembly:Removefendersfrombox.Mounttofenderbracketswith5/16
hardwareprovided.Makesurefenderclearswheel.
6. Thecylinderistiedtothebase.Removetiesandslidecylinder/wedgeforward
aligningclevisatcylinderendtobeam.Insertpinandretainingclips,check
componenttoassureproperassembly.Standbeampre-assemblyverticaland
secureinposition.Rolltank/engineassemblyintoplace,aligningpivotholes
.Bolt
withprovidedhardware.Note:Donotovertighten;thisisthevertical/horizontal
pivotpoint.
7. Pivotbeamassemblyintothehorizontalpositionandlockwithpinprovided.
8. HoseAssembly:LocatethePressureHose,notedbythepipefittings,andattachit
tothelowerfittingonthevalve.Theremaininghoseattachestothetopfittingof
thevalve.Securewithprovidedhoseclamp.
9.
Checkboththehorizontalandverticalpositionsforany“kinks”inthehoses.Note:
Alwaysmakesurebeamislockedsecurelyintoplace.

OPERATION
FILLINGTHEHYDRAULICRESERVOIR
FillthehydraulicreservoirwithatleastfivegallonsofGeneralPurposeHydraulicfluidor
AutomaticTransmissionfluid.Afterthehydraulicreservoirandtheenginecrankcasearefilled
correctlywiththeirr
espectiveoils,starttheengine.Remembertosetthethrottleandturnonthe
fuelshut-
offvalve.Thehydraulicpumpshouldprimeitself.Withtheenginerunning,movethe
hydraulicvalvelevertowardthewedge.Thiswillcausethecylindertoextendandexpelair.
Whenthecylinderisfullyextended,retractit.Repeatthisprocedureseveraltimes.(Anerratic
movementofthecylinderindicatesthatthereisairinthesystem).Youmayhavetoaddmore
fluidandrepeatthisprocedure.Oncethecylinderhasasmoothandconstantspeedindicating
thatalltheairhasbeenexpelled,moreoilshouldthenbeaddedtobringthefluidlevelupto
approximately3”belowthefillhole.Standardmodelsrequireapprox.4.5gallonsofhydraulic
fluid.
NOTE:
Ifthetankisoverfilled,itwilltendtoexpeloilfromthebreathercapwhenthecylinder
isretracted.
STARTUP
WARNING:DONOTSTARTORRUNTHELOGSPLITTERWITHOUTOILINTHE
ENGINEANDHYDRAULICRESERVOIR.
SeeseparateEngineManualforfuelandoilrecommendations.Yourlogsplitterhascome
equippedwithafuelshut-offvalvefortowingpurposes.
Beforestartingenginemakesurecrankcaseisfilledcorrectlywithoilandtheproperfuelhas
beenused.Theenginewillonlystartwhenthethrottleleverandfuelshut-offvalveareturned
totheirONpositions.
COLDWEATHERSTARTUP
TheColdWeatherClutchenablestheenginetobestartedwithouthavingtopullthroughcold,
thickenedhydraulicfluid.Simplypullthehandleoutandslideintolockedposition.Start
engine,letitwarmup,andreleaseColdWeatherClutch.Afterstarting,assurethattheleverhas
reengaged.
TOWING
Thisunitshouldnotbetowedonanystreet,highway,orpublicroadwithoutcheckingthe
existingfederal,local,andstatelaws.Anylicensingormodificationssuchastaillights,etc.,
needtocomplywithexistingfederal,local,orstatevehiclerequirementsisthesole
responsibilityofthepurchaser.Obeyallregulationswhentowingonpublicroadsand
highways.SeealsoTOWINGSAFETY.
Besureyouareusingthecorrectballhitchsizeforthehitchcoupleronthelogsplitter(2”ball).
Besuresafetychainsareproperlyconnected.Leaveenoughslackinchainsforturning.See
TOWINGSAFETYtoreadwarningsaboutcoupling.
Makesurebeamattachmentislockedinthehorizontalposition.NEVERtowsplitterinthe
verticalposition.
Turnthefuelshut-offvalveOFFtopreventfloodingoftheenginewhiletraveling.
TOWINGATNIGHT
TherequirementsfortaillightsarebasedonStatesregulations.Somestatesallowtowingat
nightaslongasthetowedequipmentdoesnotvisiblyimpairthetowvehicletaillights.Thisis
basedonastate,tostaterequirements.Thecustomerisresponsibleformeetingthestates
requirements.ATaillightKitAccessory(PartNo.7420)isavailableandrecommendedfornight
driving.
Ifa“StatementofOrigin”isrequiredinyourstate,seeyourlocaldealertoreceiveone.

OPERATION
1. Setupthelogsplitterinaclear,levelareaandblockthewheels.Thesuctionportonthetank
shouldalwaysbeonthelowersideofthelogsplitter.
2. Placealogonthebeam,againstthefootplate.Makesurethelogissecurelyonthefootplate
andupagainstthebeam.
3.
Depressthevalveleversothatthecylinderwilldrivethewedgeintothelog.Extendthecylinder
untilthelogsplitsortotheendofitsstroke.Iftheloghasnotcompletelysplitafterthecylinder
hasreachedtheendofitsextension,retractthecylinder.NOTE:
Leavingthevalveinthe“actuate”positionattheendofthestrokemaydamagethepump.
OPERATINGPOSITIONS
WARNING:THELOGSPLITTERBEAMISHEAVYANDCANPINCHHANDS/FINGERSIF
CAREISNOTTAKEN.
STANDARDHORIZONTALTOVERTICAL
TheStandardSplitterhas2operatingpositions:Horizontal,Vertical.
Removepinfrombelowbeam.Donotremoveboltandnut.Rotatebeamintoverticalpositionandpin
sobeamcannotfallintohorizontalposition.
DONOTTOWINVERTICALPOSITION!
IMPORTANT:
Whenoperatingsplitterinwoodedareas,obtainasparkarrestorfortheexhaustsystem.
Seeyourlocalenginedealer.
Whenpreparinglogs,cutendsassquareaspossible.Themaximumlengthofanylogsshouldbeonly
24”.
MAINTENANCE&STORAGE
WARNING:Disconnectsparkplugbeforeperforminganymaintenanceormakingadjustments.
RESERVOIRFLUID
Checkthehydraulicfluidlevelinthereservoirtankbeforeeachuse.Operatingwithoutanadequateoil
supplywillcauseseveredamagetothepump.Changethehydraulicfluidinthereservoirper
manufacturersrecommendations.
Beawareoftheenvironmentwhendisposingofusedpetroleumproducts.Pleasedisposeofused
hydraulicfluid,engineoilandanybyproductsfromthemaintenanceofyourlogsplitterat
approvedrecyclingcenters.
Shoulditbecomenecessarytoloosenorremoveanyhydraulicfittingorline,besuretoremoveall
pressurebyshuttingofftheengineandmovingthecontrolhandlebackandforthseveraltimes.
NEVERremovethecapfromthehydraulictankorreservoirwhileyourunitisrunning.Hotoil
underpressurewillcauseinjury.
Alwaysstoregasolineinanapproved,tightlysealedcontainer.Storecontainerinadry,coolplac
e.Keep
fuelawayfromgasapplianceswherefumescouldcontactopenflame,pilotlightsorsparks.

Donotoperateyoursplitterinpoormechanicalconditionorwhenneedingrepair.Repairand
replacewornorbrokenpartsimmediately.
Periodicallytightennuts,bolts,andhydraulicfittings.
Thehydraulicsystemofyourlogsplitterrequirescarefulinspection,alongwiththemechanical
parts.Besuretoreplacefrayed,kinked,orotherwisedamagedhydrauliccomponents.
Thepressurereliefvalveonthesplitterispresetatthefactory.Donotadjustvalve.Onlya
qualifiedservicetechnicianshouldperformthisadjustment.
Ifthewedgebecomesdullornicked,itcanberemovedandsharpened.Thewedgeisheavyand
maystillhavesharpedges,weargloveswhilehandlingthewedge.
REPAIRPARTS
YourSwisherLogSplitterhasbeenproducedwithcomponentsdesignedspecificallytothis
machine.Althoughstandardsprings,hardware,etc.maylooksimilartopartsusedonother
machinery,theymayinsomecasesbemadeofadifferentconstructionand/ormaterials.
