When battery voltage is low. a warning message appears indicating the battery needs to be charged, Your terminal is equipped with a memory backup battery which automatically charges from the luIIy-charged lithium-ion battery. This backup battery retains data in memory when the terminal’s battery is removed, and takes several hours to charge when you first use your terminal. Note: If you remove your lithium-ion battery before the back- up battery is fully charged, data may be lost. For this reason’ DO NOT remove the battery before the backup battery is fully charged, which can take up to 20 hours. Quick Reference Starting the PDT 8000 Press the red power button to turnthe PDT 8000 on, It the terminal does not power on see Troubleshooting on page 19. As the terminal initializes its unique Flash File system, the Symbol splash screen displays for about 30 seconds. When the Welcome screen appears, tap anywhere on the screen to continue to the Align screen. Note thatthese screens also appear every time you perform a hard reset Aligning the Screen To align your PDT 8000 so the cursor on the touch screen aligns with the tip of your stylus: 1. If necessary, adjust the contrast on the PDT 8000 so the screen is readable (see Adjusting the Backli'ghl on page 8), 2. Remove the stylus from the handstrap of the PDT 8000 3. Tap the center of each target that appears on the Calibration screen with the tip of the stylus, Tap in. targerlinnly anu accurately at each location on the screen. To scan bar codes with the PDT 8000: 1. Launch the terminals scanning application, 2. Aim the scanner at the bar code. 3. Press the scan trigger. Ensure the red scan beam covers the entire bar code. The green scan LED lights and a beep sounds to indicate a suocessful decode. Resetting Your PDT 8000 Terminal If your PDT 8000 terminal stops responding to input, reset it. Performing a Soft Reset A son reset restarts the terminal and saves all stored records and entries. Caution: Files that remain open during a soft reset may not be retained. DO NOT perform a soft reset it the terminal is suspend- ed. Press the Power button to wake the terminal. Quick Reference To perform a soft reset press and hold the power key (for approximately ten seconds) and release it as soon as the screen changes and the terminal begins to reboot. Performing a Hard Reset A hard reset also restarts your terminal, but erases all stored records and entries in RAM. Therefore, never perform a hard reset unless a soft reset does not solve your problems Note: With a hard reset, Formats. Preferences, Date and time, and other settings are restored to theirfactory de- fault settings, You can restore any data previously synchronized with your computer during the next ActiveSync operation. Refer to the PDT 8000 Product Reference Guide (p/n 72E-55893-xx). 1. Remove the battery door. 2. Press and release Power Key + Scan Button. 3. Replace the battery doors 4. As the terminal reboots. the Symbol splash screen displays for about 30 seconds. 5. Realign the screen as described on page 7. Host Communications The PDT 8000 terminal can communicate with a host computer either directly through its Communications port using the cradle, or wirelessly via the Spectrum24® wireless LANs. For more information on setting up and performing wireless communications with your PDT 8000 terminal. refer to the PDT 8000 Product Reference Guide (p/n 72E-55893—xx). 17 PDT 8000 Terminal Using the Cradle To oommunicate through the cradle: 1. Ensure all connections between the cradle and the host oomputer are secure. Refer to the PS}?! 8000 installation In- structions (p/n 72-55948-xx) for instructions on setting up the cradle. 2. Power on the host oomputer, the cradle. and the terminal. 3. Insert the terminal into the cradle. 4. Begin host communications as specified by your application Communicating with Printers To print from a standard printer: 1. Attach the snap—on—printer cable to the serial port in the bot- tom of the PDT 8000. 2. Attach the other end of the cable to the Data Communica» tions Connector on the printer. 3. Run your application's print function. To print from an IrDA-oompliant printer: 1. Point the IrDA port on the back ofthe PDT 8000 at the IrDA port on the printer, at a maximum distance 0139 inches (1 meter), 2. Run the application's print function. Use the supplied stylus or plastic- tipped pens intended tor use with a touch— sensitive screen Never use a pen or pencil or other sharp object on the screen. - Although your PDT 8000 is water and dust resistant, do not expose it to rain or moisture [or an extended period of lime. - The touch-sensitive screen of your PDT 8000 contains glass. Do not drop your PDT 8000 or subject it to strong impacl. - Protect your PDT 8000 from temperature extremes.
