What is a netw
A network is a group of computeers or devices that can communicate with each other. A
home networkk of more than onee computer or deviice also typically includes Internet
access, which requires a router.
A typical homee network may incclude multiple computers, a media plaayer/server, a
printer, a mod
dem, and a router. A large home netw
work may also have
e a switch,
additional rou
uters, access pointss, and many Interneet‐capable media devices
such as TVss,
game consoles, and Internet cam

 Switch –Connect several wired
network devvices to your home network. Your
router has
h a built‐in network switch (the LAN port 1‐4). If you have more wired
networrk devices than available Ethernet porrts on your router, you will need an

Wirelesss Networkin
ng and Securrity
How to ch
hoose the typ
pe of security for your wire
eless networkk
Setting up wirreless security is veery important. Leavving your wireless network
open and
unsecure could expose your entire network and peersonal files to outssiders. TRENDnet
recommends reading through th
his entire section and setting up wirelless security on you
ur
new router.
There are a few different wirelesss security types su
upported in wirelesss networking each
having its own
n characteristics wh
hich may be more suitable for your wireless
network
taking into con
nsideration compaatibility, performan
nce, as well as the security
strength
along with using older wireless networking
hardwaare (also called legaacy hardware).
It is strongly re
ecommended to enable wireless secu
urity to prevent un
nwanted users from
accessing your network and netw
work resources (peersonal documentss, media, etc.).
In general, it iss recommended th
hat you choose thee security type with
h the highest
strength and performance
suppo
orted by the wireleess computers and devices in your
network. Please review the secu
urity types to determine which one yo
ou should use for
your network..
Wireless Encryyption Types
 WEP: Legacy encryption meethod supported byy older 802.11b/g hardware.
This is
the oldestt and least secure type
of wireless en
ncryption. It is geneerally not
recommeended to use this en
ncryption standard
d, however if you have
old 802.11 b or
802.11g wireless
adapters or
o computers with old
o embedded wireless cards(wirelesss
clients), you
y may have to set your router to WEP
W to allow the old
d adapters to
connect to the router.
Note: Thiss encryption standa
ard will limit conneection speeds to 54
4Mbps.
 WPA: This encryption is sign
nificantly more rob
bust than the WEP technology.
Much
of the old
der 802.11g hardwaare was been upgraded (with firmware/driver upgradess)
to supporrt this encryption standard. Total wirreless speeds undeer this encryption
type however are limited to
o 54Mbps.
 WPA
A‐Auto: This settingg provides the routeer with the ability to
t detect wireless
devices ussing either WPA orr WPA2 encryption
n. Your wireless nettwork will
automaticcally change the en
ncryption setting based on the first wireless
device
connected
d. For example, if the
t first wireless client that connects to your wireless
network uses
WPA encryption your wireless network will use WP
PA encryption. Onlly
when all wireless
clients disconnect to the nettwork and a wirelesss client with WPA
A2
encryptio
on connects your wireless
network will then change to WPA2
encryption.
Note: WPA2 encryptiion supports 802.11n speeds and WP
PA encryption will liimit
you
ur connection speeds to 54Mbps
 WP
PA2: This is the mo
ost secure wireless encryption availab
ble today, similar to
o WPA
enccryption but more robust. This encryyption standard also supports the highest
con
nnection speeds. TRENDnet recomme
ends setting your rrouter to this encryyption
standard. If you find that
one of your wireless network devices does not sup
pport
WP
PA2 encryption, theen set your router to either WPA or W
WPA‐Auto encryptiion.
Note: Check the speciifications of your wireless
network ad
dapters and wirelesss
app
pliances to verify th
he highest level of encryption supportted.Below is brief

DTIM: A DTIM is a countdown inforrming clients of thee next window for
listening to broad

buffered broadcaast or multicast me

next DTIM with a DTIM Interval valu


Fragment Thresh

the limits of RF co

is
greater than the Fragmentation Thrreshold. This settin

result in poor perrformance.
RTS Threshold: The
T Request To Sen

protocol. A wireleess device that nee

sending the data in question. The destination
wirelesss device will send a
response called Clear

data packet size allowed
to initiate the RTS/CTS function.
Default Value: 23
347 (range: 1‐2347)
TX Power: This seetting allows you to adjust the wireleess transmit powerr to a
lower setting. In busy wireless environments, lowering the transmit pow

impact your signaal. Position your wireless devices awaay from anything that

ble, upgrade wireleess network interfaaces (such as wireleess cards in compu
uters)
If possib
from older wireless standaards to 802.11n or 802.11ac. If a wireelessly networked device
uses an older standard, th
he performance of the entire wirelesss network may be slower.
If you are still experiencing low or no signal consider reposition
ning the wireless devices,
installin
ng additional access points or wireless extenders.
For the widest coverage area, insstall your router neear the center of
your home, an
nd near the ceiling, if possible.
Avoid placing the
t router on or neear metal objects (ssuch as file cabinetts
and metal furn
niture), reflective surfaces (such as glaass or mirrors), and
masonry walls.
c.
Any obstructio
on can weaken the wireless signal (evven non‐metallic
objects), so thee fewer obstructions between the router and the
wireless devicee, the better.
d.
Place the route
er in a location awaay from other electronics, motors,
and fluorescen

e.
Many environm
mental variables caan affect the router’s performance, so
if your wirelesss signal is weak, plaace the router in seeveral locations an
