For informationabout the advanced features which may also beprovided, a comprehensive operators’ manual isavailable from your Tait dealer.To switch the radio on, turn the ON/OFF-Volume knob clockwise about one-third of aturn. You may need to finally adjust the volumewhen you receive your first call.When first switched on, the radio resumesoperation on the same channel as when it waslast switched off.To check for activity on a channel, select channelmode by pressing the Channel (Ch) key.•Use the scroll keys (  and  ) to movethrough the list of available channels, or•Use the keypad to enter a new channel number,or•Use the keypad to enter an alphanumeric label().A group is simply a collection of channelsgrouped together for scanning or voting. Youselect a group in the same way as selecting achannel.To ChangeChannelsSwitchingOnSelecting aGroupSelecting aChannelIntroductionMaking a CallSending a This section explains how to make a call usingCall your T2020II.1Select the appropriate channel for the party youwish to contact (see “Selecting a Channel”).2Check that the channel is free of traffic byobserving the BUSY indicator - if it is illuminatedthe channel is already in use and you must wait.If your radio is preprogrammed for ‘off-hookmonitoring’ you will hear any other traffic whenyou lift the microphone from its clip.3Hold the microphone about 5cm from yourmouth and press the PTT key. Pause briefly toensure your first word is not cut off, then speakclearly, identifying yourself and the person youwish to contact by your call signs (for example“Mobile-9 to Base”). Release the PTT key whenyou have finished talking.4When you receive a reply, proceed with yourconversation as described below.Using the The PTT key on the side of the microphoneMicrophone switches the radio between transmit and receiveand PTT key modes. Each time the radio transmits, the TXindicator appears in the display.To speak, press the PTT key and then release itto listen to the reply.             Transmit The radio is fitted with a preprogrammed timer toTimer limit the maximum length of transmissions. Whenthis time limit is reached, a three tone warning issounded and transmission stops. You mustrelease the PTT key before proceeding.
Alphanumeric Entry ModeTo perform repetitive operations which requireseveral keystrokes, your T2020II  may bepreprogrammed with alphanumeric labels. Theselabels, when recalled, can perform a series ofoperations such as selecting a channel andsending a call.1Press the Alphanumeric ( ) key to enterthe Alphanumeric Entry mode.2Scroll through the list of labels by using thecursor keys (  and  ) until the label isdisplayed, or enter the label for the requiredparty, using the keypad.3Press the Enter ( ) key to initiate the call.You want to call your base despatcher who hasbeen assigned the label, BASE. The keystrokesequence and display might appear as follows:ScanningTo have your radio monitor a number of channelsfor valid activity (transmissions carrying tones orcodes specific to you), you can use the prepro-grammed scanning facility in your T2020II.Scanning To set the radio scanning through a list ofpreprogrammed channels:1Ensure the microphone is in its clip (‘on-hook’),2Select a group preprogrammed as a scangroup (see “Selecting a Channel”), andscanning commences.3If the radio detects a channel with valid activity,it pauses there and makes the traffic audible toyou. When the traffic finishes, the radioresumes scanning.To stop the radio scanning, select anotherchannel.While the radio is scanning, you may lift themicrophone off-hook to suspend scanning andmake a call.If the radio was monitoring channel activity whenyou lifted the microphone off-hook, then it remainson that channel. For it to operate, your radiomust be fitted with the Selcall module andpreprogrammed appropriately. Each channel maybe preprogrammed to provide its own Selcallidentity immediately available with the Call ( )key.Sending a To call another party using Selcall:Selcall Call 1Select the appropriate channel for the party youwish to contact (see “Selecting a Channel”);2Check that the channel is free of traffic byobserving the BUSY indicator;3Press the Call ( ) key, or•Dial the identity number using the keypad, or;•Select an alphanumeric label for the call.4When the person you call replies, lift themicrophone ‘off-hook’ and continue with theconversation.Receiving a When you receive a Selcall call, your radio alertsSelcall Call you with a ringing sound (similar to that of atelephone) and the CALL indicator appears in thedisplay.•To accept the call, lift the microphone ‘off-hook’and identify yourself in the usual manner. Theringing stops when you press the PTT key.•To reject a call, press any key other than thePTT and the ringing will stop.Group Calls If your radio sounds the ringing tone only once,and the caller broadcasts their message withoutwaiting for a reply, you have received a group call.It is not normally necessary to reply to such calls.Receiving a CallTo be able to receive calls on a single channel,simply check that the radio has the appropriatechannel selected (see “Selecting a Channel”).To be able to receive calls on several channels,see  “Scanning”.Responding Your radio remains muted until there is activity onto Calls the channel. Listen for your own call sign, andrespond promptly when you hear it by pressingthe PTT key and identifying yourself (for example“Mobile-9 Receiving”).Monitor Your T2020II is fitted with muting facilities whichensure you are not disturbed by calls which arenot clear or are not intended for you.The Monitor ( ) key is used to override anypreprogrammed muting controls, and allows youto hear all traffic on a channel. The following tabledescribes the use of the Monitor ( ) key.CTCSS/DCSmuteSelcallmuteRFsquelchFunctionPermits reception only ifa call carries aninaudible tone or codespecific to your fleet orgroup.Permits reception only ifa call carries a specialtone sequence whichrepresents your identitynumber.Permits reception only ifa call has a signal abovea factory-set threshold.This ensures that onlyintelligible signals aremade audible.To Defeat / ReactivatePress the Monitor() key briefly.(If hookswitch monitor-ing is preprogrammed,lifting the microphone offhook will have the sameeffect.)Press briefly again toreactivate.Hold the Monitor ( )key for more than onesecond.Press briefly again toreactivate.
