The above pins are also necessary to debug the application when the module is assembled on it so
we recommend connecting them also to dedicated test point.

4.3 General Design Rules
The principal guidelines for the Power Supply Design embrace three different design steps:
the electrical design
the thermal design
the PCB layout.
Electrical Design Guidelines
The electrical design of the power supply depends strongly from the power source where this power is
drained. We will distinguish them into three categories:
+5V input (typically PC internal regulator output)
+12V input (typically automotive)
Battery
+5V Source Power Supply Design Guidelines
The desired output for the power supply is 3.8V, hence there's not a big difference between the
input source and the desired output and a linear regulator can be used. A switching power
supply will not be suited because of the low drop out requirements.
When using a linear regulator, a proper heat sink shall be provided in order to dissipate the
power generated.
A Bypass low ESR capacitor of adequate capacity must be provided in order to cut the current
absorption peaks close to the Module, a 100μF capacitor is usually suited.
Make sure the low ESR capacitor on the power supply output rated at least 10V.
An example of linear regulator with 5V input is:

+ 12V input Source Power Supply Design
Guidelines
The desired output for the power supply is 3.8V, hence due to the big difference between the
input source and the desired output, a linear regulator is not suited and shall not be used. A
switching power supply will be preferable because of its better efficiency.
When using a switching regulator, a 500kHz or more switching frequency regulator is preferable
because of its smaller inductor size and its faster transient response. This allows the regulator
to respond quickly to the current peaks absorption.
In any case the frequency and Switching design selection is related to the application to be
developed due to the fact the switching frequency could also generate EMC interferences.
For car PB battery the input voltage can rise up to 15,8V and this should be kept in mind when
choosing components: all components in the power supply must withstand this voltage.
A Bypass low ESR capacitor of adequate capacity must be provided in order to cut the current
absorption peaks, a 100μF capacitor is usually suited.
Make sure the low ESR capacitor on the power supply output is rated at least 10V.
For Car applications a spike protection diode should be inserted close to the power input, in
order to clean the supply from spikes.
An example of switching regulator with 12V input is in the below schematic:
UE910 3G HARDWARE USER GUIDE 1vv0301171 Rev.3 2015-04-17 24 of 78
Reproduction forbidden without Telit Communications PLC written authorization All Rights Reserved
Battery Source Power Supply Design Guidelines
The desired nominal output for the power supply is 3.8V and the maximum voltage allowed is 4.2V,
hence a single 3.7V Li-Ion cell battery type is suited for supplying the power to the Telit UE910 module.
A Bypass low ESR capacitor of adequate capacity must be provided in order to cut the current
absorption peaks, a 100μF tantalum capacitor is usually suited.
Make sure the low ESR capacitor (usually a tantalum one) is rated at least 10V.
A protection diode should be inserted close to the power input, in order to save the UE910 from
power polarity inversion. Otherwise the battery connector should be done in a way to avoid
polarity inversions when connecting the battery.
The battery capacity must be at least 500mAh in order to withstand the current peaks of 2A;
the suggested capacity is from 500mAh to 1000mAh.

Thermal Design Guidelines
The thermal design for the power supply heat sink should be done with the following specifications:
Average current consumption during HSDPA transmission @PWR level max : 700 mA
Average current during idle: 1.8 mA
Considering the very low current during idle, especially if Power Saving function is enabled, it is possible
to consider from the thermal point of view that the device absorbs current significantly only during calls.
If we assume that the device stays into transmission for short periods of time (let's say few minutes) and
then remains for a quite long time in idle (let's say one hour), then the power supply has always the time
to cool down between the calls and the heat sink could be smaller than the calculated one for 700mA
maximum RMS current, or even could be the simple chip package (no heat sink).
Moreover in the average network conditions the device is requested to transmit at a lower power level
than the maximum and hence the current consumption will be less than the 700mA, being usually around
150mA.
For these reasons the thermal design is rarely a concern and the simple ground plane where the power
supply chip is placed can be enough to ensure a good thermal condition and avoid overheating.
The generated heat will be mostly conducted to the ground plane under the UE910; you must ensure
that your application can dissipate it.
NOTE:
The average consumption during transmissions depends on the power level at
which the device is requested to transmit by the network. The average current
consumption hence varies significantly.

Power Supply PCB layout Guidelines
As seen on the electrical design guidelines the power supply shall have a low ESR capacitor on the
output to cut the current peaks on the input to protect the supply from spikes The placement of this
component is crucial for the correct working of the circuitry. A misplaced component can be useless or
can even decrease the power supply performances.
The Bypass low ESR capacitor must be placed close to the Telit UE910 power input pads or in
the case the power supply is a switching type it can be placed close to the inductor to cut the
ripple provided the PCB trace from the capacitor to the UE910 is wide enough to ensure a
dropless connection even during an 1A current peak.
The protection diode must be placed close to the input connector where the power source is
drained.
The PCB traces from the input connector to the power regulator IC must be wide enough to
ensure no voltage drops occur when an 1A current peak is absorbed.
The PCB traces to the UE910 and the Bypass capacitor must be wide enough to ensure no
significant voltage drops occur. This is for the same reason as previous point. Try to keep this
trace as short as possible.
To reduce the EMI due to switching, it is important to keep very small the mesh involved; thus
the input capacitor, the output diode (if not embodied in the IC) and the regulator have to form
a very small loop. This is done in order to reduce the radiated field (noise) at the switching
frequency (100-500 kHz usually).
A dedicated ground for the Switching regulator separated by the common ground plane is
suggested.
The placement of the power supply on the board should be done in such a way to guarantee
that the high current return paths in the ground plane are not overlapped to any noise sensitive
circuitry as the microphone amplifier/buffer or earphone amplifier.
The power supply input cables should be kept separate from noise sensitive lines such as
microphone/earphone cables.
The insertion of EMI filter on VBATT pins is suggested in those designs where antenna is
placed close to battery or supply lines.
A ferrite bead like Murata BLM18EG101TN1 or Taiyo Yuden P/N FBMH1608HM101 can be
used for this purpose.
The below figure shows the recommended circuit:

4.4 RTC Bypass out
The VRTC pin brings out the Real Time Clock supply, which is separate from the rest of the digital
part, allowing having only RTC going on when all the other parts of the device are off.
To this power output a backup capacitor can be added in order to increase the RTC autonomy during
power off of the battery. NO Devices must be powered from this pin.
In order to keep the RTC active when VBATT is not supplied it is possible to back up the RTC section
connecting a backup circuit to the related VRTC signal (pad C14 on module’s Pinout).
For additional details on the Backup solutions please refer to the related application note (xE910 RTC
Backup Application Note)
4.5 VAUX Power Output
A regulated power supply output is provided in order to supply small devices from the module. The
signal is present on Pad R11 and it is in common with the PWRMON (module powered ON indication)
function.
This output is always active when the module is powered ON.

5.2 Power on
To turn on the UE910 the pad ON_OFF* must be tied low for at least 5 seconds and then released.
The maximum current that can be drained from the ON_OFF* pad is 0,1 mA.
A simple circuit to do it is:
NOTE:
Don't use any pull up resistor on the ON_OFF* line, it is internally pulled up.
Using pull up resistor may bring to latch up problems on the UE910 power
regulator and improper power on/off of the module. The line ON_OFF* must be
connected only in open collector or open drain configuration.
In this document all the lines that are inverted, hence have active low signals
are labelled with a name that ends with”#",”*” or with a bar over the name.
To check if the device has powered on, the hardware line PWRMON should be
monitored.
It is mandatory to avoid sending data to the serial ports during the first 200ms
of the module start-up.

5.3 Power off
Turning off the device can be done in two ways:
via AT command (see UE910 Software User Guide, AT#SHDN)
by tying low pin ON_OFF*
Either ways, the device issues a detach request to network informing that the device will not be
reachable any more.
To turn OFF the UE910 the pad ON_OFF* must be tied low for at least 3 seconds and then released.
NOTE:
To check if the device has been powered off, the hardware line PWRMON
must be monitored. The device is powered off when PWRMON goes low.
In order to avoid a back powering effect it is recommended to avoid having any
HIGH logic level signal applied to the digital pins of the UE910 when the
module is powered off or during an ON/OFF transition.

5.4 Unconditional Shutdown
HW_SHUTDOWN* is used to unconditionally shutdown the UE910. Whenever this signal is pulled low,
the UE910 is reset. When the device is reset it stops any operation. After the release of the line, the
UE910 is unconditionally shut down, without doing any detach operation from the network where it is
registered. This behaviour is not a proper shut down because any WCDMA device is requested to
issue a detach request on turn off. The HW_SHUTDOWN* is internally controlled on start-up to
achieve always a proper power-on reset sequence, so there's no need to control this pin on start-up.
To unconditionally shutdown the UE910, the pad HW_SHUTDOWN* must be tied low for at least 200
milliseconds and then released.
The signal is internally pulled up so the pin can be left floating if not used.
If used, then it must always be connected with an open collector transistor, to permit to the
internal circuitry the power on reset and under voltage lockout functions.

NOTE:
According to V.24, some signal names are referred to the application side,
therefore on the UE910 side these signal are on the opposite direction:
TXD on the application side will be connected to the receive line (here named
C103/TXD)
RXD on the application side will be connected to the transmit line (here named
C104/RXD)
For a minimum implementation, only the TXD, RXD lines can be connected,
the other lines can be left open provided a software flow control is
implemented.
In order to avoid a back powering effect it is recommended to avoid having any
HIGH logic level signal applied to the digital pins of the UE910 when the
module is powered off or during an ON/OFF transition.

RS232 LEVEL TRANSLATION
In order to interface the UE910 with a PC com port or a RS232 (EIA/TIA-232) application a level
translator is required. This level translator must:
invert the electrical signal in both directions;
Change the level from 0/1.8V to +15/-15V.
Actually, the RS232 UART 16450, 16550, 16650 & 16750 chipsets accept signals with lower levels on
the RS232 side (EIA/TIA-562), allowing a lower voltage-multiplying ratio on the level translator. Note
that the negative signal voltage must be less than 0V and hence some sort of level translation is always
required.
The simplest way to translate the levels and invert the signal is by using a single chip level translator.
There are a multitude of them, differing in the number of drivers and receivers and in the levels (be sure
to get a true RS232 level translator not a RS485 or other standards).
By convention the driver is the level translator from the 0-1.8V UART to the RS232 level. The receiver
is the translator from the RS232 level to 0-1.8V UART.
In order to translate the whole set of control lines of the UART you will need:
5 drivers
3 receivers
An example of RS232 level adaptation circuitry could be done using a MAXIM transceiver (MAX218)
In this case the chipset is capable to translate directly from 1.8V to the RS232 levels (Example done
on 4 signals only).
The RS232 serial port lines are usually connected to a DB9 connector with the following layout:

5.6 General Purpose I/O
The UE910 module is provided by a set of Configurable Digital Input / Output pins (CMOS 1.8V)
Input pads can only be read; they report the digital value (high or low) present on the pad at the read
time.
Output pads can only be written or queried and set the value of the pad output.
An alternate function pad is internally controlled by the UE910 firmware and acts depending on the
function implemented.

Using a GPIO as INPUT
The GPIO pads, when used as inputs, can be connected to a digital output of another device and
report its status, provided this device has interface levels compatible with the 1.8V CMOS levels of the
GPIO.
If the digital output of the device to be connected with the GPIO input pad has interface levels different
from the 1.8V CMOS, then it can be buffered with an open collector transistor with a 47K pull up to
1.8V.
NOTE:
In order to avoid a back powering effect it is recommended to avoid having any
HIGH logic level signal applied to the digital pins of the UE910 when the
module is powered off or during an ON/OFF transition.
Using a GPIO as OUTPUT
The GPIO pads, when used as outputs, can drive 1.8V CMOS digital devices or compatible hardware.
When set as outputs, the pads have a push-pull output and therefore the pull-up resistor may be
omitted.

6.4 Antenna Requirements
The antenna connection and board layout design are the most important aspect in the full product
design as they strongly affect the product overall performances, hence read carefully and follow the
requirements and the guidelines for a proper design.
The antenna and antenna transmission line on PCB for a Telit UE910 device shall fulfil the following
requirements:
PCB design guidelines
When using the UE910, since there's no antenna connector on the module, the antenna must be
connected to the UE910 antenna pad (K1) by means of a transmission line implemented on the PCB.
In the case the antenna is not directly connected at the antenna pad of the UE910, then a PCB line is
needed in order to connect with it or with its connector.
This transmission line shall fulfil the following requirements:

The transmission line should be designed according to the following guidelines:
Ensure that the antenna line impedance is 50 ohm;
Keep the antenna line on the PCB as short as possible, since the antenna line loss shall be
less than 0,3 dB;
Antenna line must have uniform characteristics, constant cross section; avoid meanders and
abrupt curves;
Keep, if possible, one layer of the PCB used only for the Ground plane;
Surround (on the sides, over and under) the antenna line on PCB with Ground, avoid having
other signal tracks facing directly the antenna line track;
The ground around the antenna line on PCB has to be strictly connected to the Ground Plane
by placing vias every 2mm at least;
Place EM noisy devices as far as possible from UE910 antenna line;
Keep the antenna line far away from the UE910 power supply lines;
If you have EM noisy devices around the PCB hosting the UE910, such as fast switching ICs,
take care of the shielding of the antenna line by burying it inside the layers of PCB and
surround it with Ground planes, or shield it with a metal frame cover.
If you don't have EM noisy devices around the PCB of UE910, by using a micro strip on the
superficial copper layer for the antenna line, the line attenuation will be lower than a buried
one;

PCB Guidelines in case of FCC Certification
In the case FCC certification is required for an application using UE910-N3G, according to FCC KDB
996369 for modular approval requirements, the transmission line has to be similar to that implemented
on UE910 interface board and described in the following chapter.
Transmission line design
During the design of the UE910 interface board, the placement of components has been chosen
properly, in order to keep the line length as short as possible, thus leading to lowest power losses
possible. A Grounded Coplanar Waveguide (G-CPW) line has been chosen, since this kind of
transmission line ensures good impedance control and can be implemented in an outer PCB layer as
needed in this case. A SMA female connector has been used to feed the line.
The interface board is realized on a FR4, 4-layers PCB. Substrate material is characterized by relative
permittivity εr = 4.6 ± 0.4 @ 1 GHz, TanD= 0.019 ÷ 0.026 @ 1 GHz.
A characteristic impedance of nearly 50 Ω is achieved using trace width = 1.1 mm, clearance from
coplanar ground plane = 0.3 mm each side. The line uses reference ground plane on layer 3, while
copper is removed from layer 2 underneath the line. Height of trace above ground plane is 1.335 mm.
Calculated characteristic impedance is 51.6 Ω, estimated line loss is less than 0.1 dB. The line
geometry is shown below:

Transmission Line Measurements
An HP8753E VNA (Full-2-port calibration) has been used in this measurement session.
A calibrated coaxial cable has been soldered at the pad corresponding to RF output; a SMA connector
has been soldered to the board in order to characterize the losses of the transmission line including
the connector itself. During Return Loss / impedance measurements, the transmission line has been
terminated to 50 Ω load.
Return Loss plot of line under test is shown below:
Line input impedance (in Smith Chart format, once the line has been terminated to 50 Ω load) is
shown in the following figure:

Antenna Installation Guidelines
Install the antenna in a place covered by the WCDMA signal.
If the device antenna is located farther than 20cm from the human body and there are no co-located
transmitter then the Telit FCC/IC approvals can be re-used by the end product.
If the device antenna is located closer than 20cm from the human body or there are co-located
transmitter then the additional FCC/IC testing may be required for the end product (Telit FCC/IC
approvals cannot be reused).
Antenna shall not be installed inside metal cases.
Antenna shall be installed also according to antenna manufacturer instructions.

MIC connection
The bias for the microphone has to be as clean as possible; the first connection (single ended) is
preferable since the Vmic noise and ground noise are fed into the input as common mode and then
rejected. This sounds strange; usually the connection to use in order to reject the common mode is the
balanced one. In this situation we have to recall that the microphone is a sound to current transducer,
so the resistor is the current to tension transducer, so finally the resistor feeds the input in balanced
way even if the configuration, from a microphone point of view, seems to be un-balanced.
The following images show some connection examples:
UE910 3G HARDWARE USER GUIDE 1vv0301171 Rev.3 2015-04-17 59 of 78
Reproduction forbidden without Telit Communications PLC written authorization All Rights Reserved
If a "balanced way" is anyway desired, much more care has to be taken to Vmic noise and ground
noise; also the 33pF-100Ohm-33pF RF-filter has to be doubled (one each wire).

LINE IN Connection
If the audio source is not a mike but a different device, the following connections can be done.
Place 100nF capacitor in series with both inputs, so the DC current is blocked.
Place the 33pF-100Ohm-33pF RF-filter, in order to prevent some EMI field to get into the high
impedance high gain MIC inputs.
Since the input is differential, the common mode voltage noise between the two (different) ground is
rejected, provided that both MIC+ & MIC- are connected directly onto the source.

EAR Connection
The audio output of the UE910 is balanced, this is helpful to double the level and to reject common
mode (click and pop are common mode and therefore rejected).
These outputs can drive directly a small loudspeaker with electrical impedance not lower than 16
Ohm.
NOTE:
In order to get the maximum audio level at a given output voltage level
(dBspl/Vrms), the following breaking through procedure can be used. Have the
loudspeaker as close as you can to the listener (this simplify also the echo
cancelling); choose the loudspeaker with the higher sensitivity (dBspl per W);
choose loudspeakers with the impedance close to the limit, in order to feed
more power inside the transducer (it increases the W/Vrms ratio). If this were
not enough, an external amplifier should be used.

9 APPLICATION DESIGN
The UE910 modules have been designed in order to be compliant with a standard lead-free SMT
process.
9.1 Footprint
TOP VIEW
In order to easily rework the UE910 is suggested to consider on the application a 1.5 mm placement
inhibit area around the module.
It is also suggested, as common rule for an SMT component, to avoid having a mechanical part of the
application in direct contact with the module.
NOTE:
In the customer application, the region under WIRING INHIBIT (see figure
above) must be clear from signal or ground paths.

It is not recommended to place via or micro-via not covered by solder resist in an area of 0,3 mm
around the pads unless it carries the same signal of the pad itself
(see following figure).
Holes in pad are allowed only for blind holes and not for through holes.
Recommendations for PCB pad surfaces:

Electro-less Ni / Immersion Au
3 7 / 0.05 0.15
good solder ability protection,
high shear force values
The PCB must be able to resist the higher temperatures which are occurring at the lead-free process.
This issue should be discussed with the PCB-supplier. Generally, the wettability of tin-lead solder
paste on the described surface plating is better compared to lead-free solder paste.
It is not necessary to panel the application’s PCB, however in that case it is suggested to use milled
contours and predrilled board breakouts; scoring or v-cut solutions are not recommended.
