(XTR-260/330)NNoottee::You will not be able to receive SWS alerts iftransmitters are not located in your area.VG-2 ALERTSVG-2 Detection ModeThe VG-2, also known as a “radar detectordetector,” is a special receiver used by police todetect signals radiated by a radar detector. Seepage 21 for more information on VG-2.When a VG-2 signal is detected, the VG-2 alertis sounded. After 3 seconds, the audio iscancelled and the VG-2 indicator flashes at aslower rate. Every 30 seconds, the detectorchecks for a VG-2 signal. This cycle is repeated ifthe VG-2 signal is detected again. If no signal isdetected, two beeps are provided indicating an“all clear” condition.During the period a VG-2 signal is detected, aradar signal cannot be detected. However, because the VG-2 alert has confirmed that apatrol car is nearby, you are already aware of thepotential for speed monitoring and can adjustyour speed accordingly. Laser detection is notaffected while a VG-2 signal is detected.14 15TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDEReset FeaturesAll user features can be reset to factory settings.Default Factory1. Also, donot use any abrasive cleaners on the unit’sexterior. In Most States YES!Laser-Radar detectors are legal in everystate (with the exception of Virginia andWashington, D.C., which have localregulations restricting the use of radarreceivers in any vehicle) when used inautomobiles or light trucks (under 10,000lbs.). Concerning trucks over 10,000 lbs., theFederal Highway Administration (FHWA)issued a regulation, effective January, 1994which prohibits radar and laser detector usein these types of vehicles nationally. Prior tothe FHWA regulation, laws existed in thestate of New York restricting the use of radardetectors in trucks over 18,000 lbs. and inIllinois in trucks over 26,000 lbs.FCC InformationFCC ID: HSXWH10 - XTR-140/260/330FCC ID: HSXWH21 - XTR-140/260/330This device complies with part 15 of the FCCRules. When a radar beamreflects off a moving target, a measurable frequency shift occurs. The radar unit convertsthis shift into miles per hour to determine yourvehicle’s speed. Currently, the FCC (FederalCommunications Commission) permits operation of traffic radar guns at X Band (10.500 - 10.550 GHz), K Band (24.050 - 24.250GHz), and Ka Band (33.400 - 36.000 GHz).Note:A radar detector will only alarm if anofficer is transmitting on any one of the aboveradar bands.Laser FactsIt’s well documented that many radar gunscannot reliably provide the speed of a targeted vehicle that is traveling in a group ofvehicles. In contrast, a laser gun can target aspecific vehicle out of a line of traffic and determine its speed. The advantage of laserover radar in terms of target identification isthe result of the laser gun’s narrow beam. Aradar transmission can cover more than afour-lane highway at a distance of 1,000 feet, compared with a laser transmission whichcovers about 3 feet at the same distance. Forbest protection, keep these points, listed onthe following section, in mind:SPEED MONITORINGLaser Facts (Continued)• Because your vehicle’s license plate or headlights are the laser gun’s primary targets, mounting your Whistler detector on the dashboard can improve laser detection at shortrange.•Do not follow closely behind any vehicle youcannot see through. If you can’t see past avehicle ahead of you, chances are your detectorwon’t either.• The receiving range of your laser detectorwill not be the same as a radar detector. Laserguns are most often used at short range.Whistler Laser/Radar detectors receive all currentlaser guns which operate at a laser wavelength of 905+/- 10nm.• Pro Laser™I II III • LTI 20-20 • Ultra Lyte Other Speed Detection SystemsSeveral techniques other than radar or laser areused to measure vehicle speeds. When thesemethods are being used, no detector can provide a warning. These techniques include:• PPaacciinngg- A patrol car drives behind you and matches your driving speed.•VVaassccaarr//AAiirrccrraafftt- The time it takes a vehicleto travel a known distance is measured.18 19 20SPEED MONITORING Radar Detector Detectors (VG-2)SpectreThe Interceptor VG-2, or simply VG-2,is a microwave receiver used by police todetect signals radiated by the local oscillatorof a radar detector. Because its purpose is toidentify persons driving with radar detectors, the VG-2 is known as a “radar detector detector”.The VG-2 is a tool used by thepolice to identify radar detector equippedvehicles. If caught, in a state where detectorsare illegal, (see page 18), drivers risk losingtheir radar detector and receiving a fine. Inaddition, instant-on radar is almost alwaysused in combination with a VG-2, leavingunsuspecting motorists vulnerable to receivingtwo tickets—one potentially for speeding, theother for possession of a detector. Having aradar detector capable of detecting the VG-2may alert you to the presence of a speed trap. For more information on speed monitoring technologies, please visit our F.A.Q. page onour website: www.whistlergroup.comIItt iiss tthhee rreessppoonnssiibbiilliittyy ooff tthhee iinnddiivviidduuaall rraaddaarrddeetteeccttoorrooppeerraattoorr ttoo kknnooww aanndd uunnddeerrssttaanndd tthheellaawwss iinn yyoouurr aarreeaarreeggaarrddiinngg tthhee lleeggaalliittyy ooff tthheeuussee ooff rraaddaarr ddeetteeccttoorrss..NOTE: Having a radar detector capable ofdetecting the VG-2 may alert you to thepresence of a speed trap. The audio alert is continuous for aminimum of 3 seconds.Laser TipsIf you are the targeted vehicle, a laser guncan often determine your speed within a fewseconds after you receive an alert. In this situation there is generally no time to safelyadjust your speed. However, if you are traveling near or behind the targeted vehicle and receive an alert, response timeshould be sufficient. Any laser alert, regardlessof duration, requires immediate action!Pulse Protection®Pulse (or instant-on) radar is more difficult todetect than conventional radar because itremains “off” until activated to measure thespeed of a targeted vehicle. When a pulsetype transmission is detected, your Whistlerdetector sounds an urgent 3-second audiowarning and flashes the Alert strength indicators at their fastest rate. (The XTR-260/330 models display “P”.) After the 3-second pulse alert, the standard alertpattern continues for as long as the signal ispresent. It is important to respond promptlyto a pulse alert, since warning time may beminimal.LASER/RADAR ALERTSModel Features Summary................................. 3 - 6Installation....................................................... 7 - 8•Mounting Guidelines 7•Windshield Mounting 7•Power Connection And Fuse Replacement 8Operation....................................................... 8 - 12•Power On Self Test & Volume 8•Integrated Real Voice® 8•Feature Engaged Confirmation 9•Self Test Mute 9•Setting Saver 9•Auto Quiet Mode 9•Quiet Mode 10•City/City 1/City 2 Modes 10•Highway Mode 10•Dim/Dark Modes 11•Engaging/Disengaging VG-2 Detection 12•Vehicle Battery Saver Mode 12•Stay Alert 12Laser & Radar Alerts..................................... 13 - 14•Laser Audio/Visual Alerts 13•Laser Tips 13•Pulse Protection®13•Safety Warning System®14VG-2 Alerts......................................................... 14POP™Mode....................................................... 15Option Select Mode........................................... 15Troubleshooting Guide................................. 16 - 17•Care & Maintenance 17Are Detectors Legal?......................................... 18•FCC Information 19Speed Facts.................................................. 19 - 21•Radar Facts 19•Laser Facts 19-20•Other Speed Detection Systems 20 - 21Warranty Information................................... 22 - 24Specifications..................................................... 25Accessories......................................................... 2645• Total Band Protection™• Red Numeric Icon Display • Detects POP™ Mode• 360° Protection • Real Voice®• VG-2 Cloaking• 3 City Modes• Quiet/Auto Quiet Mode• Dim/Dark Mode• Stay Alert • Setting Saver• Vehicle Battery Saver™• Safety Warning System™• Alert Priority• Dual LED Periscopes3Features of XTR-33034 567 8 9 10 11 12 13XTR-140 FEATURES• Total Band Protection™• Icon Display• 360° Protection• VG-2 Cloaking • 3 City Modes• Quiet/Auto Quiet Mode• Vehicle Battery Saver • Alert Priority• Dual LED PeriscopesXTR-260 FEATURES4531420171819453• Total Band Protection™• Blue Numeric Icon Display • 360° Protection • VG-2 Cloaking• 3 City Modes• Quiet/Auto Quiet Mode• Dim/Dark Mode• Stay Alert • Setting Saver• Vehicle Battery Saver™ • Safety Warning System™• Alert Priority• Dual Alert Display• Dual LED Periscopes21141516Features of XTR-260Features of XTR-1401317,18,19, 222114151617,18,19, 2212c210712896112c211712a89611012b12b12c211712a896110
