POP™Mode AlertsBecause POP™Mode radar utilizes the sameKor Ka band frequencies, POP™Mode Alerts will bedisplayed as regular radar alerts.LASER/RADAR ALERTSSpeed Radar Audio/Visual AlertsWhen X, K or Ka is detected, the band ID andsignal strength is displayed. The audio alert iscontinuous and has a geiger counter-like pattern. The faster the beep, the closer orstronger the radar source.Laser Audio/Visual AlertsWhen a laser signal is detected the audio alert is continuous for a minimum of 3 seconds. • The Displays Shows:Pulse Protection®Pulse (or instant-on) radar is more difficult todetect than conventional radar because itremains ‘off’ until activated to measure the speedof a targeted vehicle.When a pulse type transmission is detected, yourWhistler detector sounds an urgent 3-secondaudio warning and the display shows: After the 3-second pulse alert, the standard alertpatterncontinues for as long as the signal ispresent.It is important to respond promptly to a pulsealert, since warning time may be minimal.POP MODE ALERTSVG-2 Audio/Visual AlertsNote: You must turn this feature on before it willdetect VG-2.When a VG-2 signal is detected, the detector “hides”its own radiated signal and becomes undetectableby the VG-2.Every 30 seconds, the detector checks for a VG-2signal. If a VG-2 signal is still present, the unitcontinues to hide and repeats the VG-2 alert. If nosignal is detected, two beeps are provided, indicating an “all clear” condition. During a VG-2Alert X, K, and Ka band signals cannot bereceived (Reference page 21 for VG-2 information).Alert PriorityWhen two or more signals are received at thesame time, the alert priority is:1. Laser2.VG-23. Speed Radar4. Safety RadarExample:If X band is alerting, then suddenly a VG-2 signal is detected, the VG-2 warning will override the X band alert.VG-2 ALERTSReset FeaturesAll user features can be reset to factory settings.•Unplug the Power Cord from the unit.•Press and hold the Quiet button.•Plug the Power Cord into the unit.•Wait for 2 beeps.•Release the Quiet button.Unit is now reset to the following features and settings.Default factory settings are:1.HIGHWAY Mode.2. Dim/Dark Mode to full illumination of display.3. Auto Quiet Mode OFF.4.VG-2 Detection Mode OFF.5.Safety Radar OFF.6. Vehicle Battery Saver ON.7. Full Power Up sequence.8.Default TONE 3.9. POP ON. 10. Voice ON.11. LED Periscope to BLINKRESET FEATURESYour Whistler detector is expertly engineeredand designed to exacting quality standards toprovide you with reliable, trouble-free operation.If your unit has been correctly installed followingthe guidelines in this manual, but is not operating optimally, please refer to the troubleshooting guide below.PROBLEM: No display or audio.• Check fuse in plug; replace if necessary with a2 amp 3AG type.•Check fuse for lighter socket; replace if necessary.• Make sure lighter socket is clean.PROBLEM: Unit alarms when vehicle hitsbumps.• Check for loose lighter socket; tighten and clean.•Check connections at both ends of power cord. Substitute another cord to determine if cord is defective. Return defective cord to the factory.PROBLEM: Audio alerts are not loudenough.•Cancel Auto Quiet Mode or City Mode.• Check audio level setting (see page 8 ).If difficulties occur which cannot be solved by information in this Troubleshooting Guide, pleasecall Whistler Customer Service at 1-800-531-0004or visit our FAQ page atwww.whistlergroup.com/faq-detectors.asp,before returning your unit for service.TROUBLESHOOTINGCare And MaintenanceDuring the summer months, avoid prolongedexposure to direct sunlight by removing your unitfrom the dash when your vehicle is parked for anextended period of time. Do not spray water,cleaners, or polishes directly onto the unit. Thespray may penetrate through the openings anddamage the unit. Also, do not use any abrasivecleaners on the unit’s exterior.ARE DETECTORS LEGAL?In Most States YES!Laser-Radar detectors are legal in every state(with the exception of Virginia and Washington,D.C., which have local regulations restricting theuse of radar receivers in any vehicle) when usedin automobiles or light trucks (under 10,000 lbs.). Concerning trucks over 10,000 lbs., the FederalHighway Administration (FHWA) issued a regulation, effective January, 1994 which prohibitsradar and laser detector use in these types ofvehicles nationally. Prior to the FHWA regulation,laws existed in the state of New York restrictingthe use of radar detectors in trucks over 18,000lbs. and in Illinois in trucks over 26,000 lbs.CARE AND MAINTENANCEFCC ID : HSXWH10FCC ID : HSXWH21This device complies with part 15 of the FCCRules. Operation is subject to the following twoconditions: (1) This device many not cause harmful interference, and(2) this device must accept any interferencereceived, including interference that may causeundesired operation.Important: FCC requirements state thatchanges or modifications not expressly approvedby Whistler could void the user’s authority tooperate the equipment.SPEED MONITORINGRadar FactsA radar gun operates by transmitting radiowaves at certain frequencies which reflect offobjects and are picked up by the radar gun’sreceiving section. When a radar beam reflectsoff a moving target, a measurable frequency shiftoccurs. The radar unit converts this shift into milesper hour to determine your vehicle’s speed.Currently, the FCC (Federal CommunicationsCommission) permits operation of traffic radarguns at X Band (10.500 - 10.550 GHz), K Band(24.050 - 24.250 GHz), and Ka Band (33.400 -36.000 GHz).Note: A radar detector will only alarm if anofficer is transmitting on any one of the aboveradar bands.FCC INFORMATIONPOP™ ModePOP™Mode is a feature on some newer radarguns operating on K and Ka bands. When the gunis in POP™Mode and activated, a brief burst ofenergy, less that 1/15 of a second, is transmittedand the vehicle’s speed is quickly acquired. Adetector without POP™Mode detection capabilitycannot respond to this brief transmission.Laser FactsIt’s well documented that many radar guns cannot reliably provide the speed of a targetedvehicle that is traveling in a group of vehicles. Incontrast, a laser gun can target a specific vehicleout of a line of traffic and determine its speed. Theadvantage of laser over radar in terms of target identification is the result of the laser gun’snarrow beam. A radar gun’s transmission cancover more than a four-lane highway at a distanceof 1,000 feet, compared with a laser gun’stransmission which covers about 3 feet at thesame distance. For best protection, keep thesepoints in mind: •Because the vehicle’s license plate or headlights are the laser gun’s primary targets,mounting the Whistler detector on the dashboard can improve laser detection at shortrange.•Do not follow closely behind any vehicle youcannot see through. If you can’t see past a vehicle ahead of you, chances are your detectorcan’t either.• The receiving range of your laser detector willnot be the same as a radar detector. Laser gunsare most often used at short range.Whistler Laser-Radar detectors receive all currentlaser guns which operate at a laser wavelength of 905+/- 10nm.Pro Laser™I II III •LT1 20-20 •Ultra LyteSPEED MONITORINGLaser TipsIf you are the targeted vehicle, a laser gun canoften determine your speed within a few seconds after you receive an alert. In thissituation, there is generally no time to safelyadjust your speed. However, if you are travelingnear or behind the targeted vehicle and receivean alert, response time should be sufficient. Anylaser alert, regardless of duration, requiresimmediate action!Other Speed Detection SystemsSeveral techniques other than radar or laser areused to measure vehicle speeds. When thesemethods are being used, no detector can providea warning. These techniques include:• PPaacciinngg- A patrol car drives behind you and matches your driving speed.•VVaassccaarr//AAiirrccrraafftt- The time it takes a vehicle to travel a known distance is measured.Radar Detector Detectors: VG-2,SpectreThe Interceptor VG-2 or simply VG-2, is one type ofmicrowave receiver used by Police to detect signals radiated by the local oscillator of a radar detector.Because its purpose is to identify persons drivingwith radar detectors, these devices are known as a“radar detector detector” (RDD).An RDD is the primary tool used by the police toidentify radar detector equipped vehicles. If caughtin a state or country where detectors are illegal (seepage 18), drivers risk losing their radar detector andreceiving a fine. In addition, instant-on radar isalmost always used in combination with an RDD, leaving unsuspecting motorists vulnerable to receivetwo tickets - one potential for speeding, and theother for possession of a detector.SPEED MONITORINGNote: Having a radar detector capable ofdetecting the VG-2 may alert you to thepresence of a speed trap. The newest toolPolice have to detect radar detectors iscalled Spectre. Spectre can detect themajority of undetectable (VG-2) laser/radardetectors on the market.It is the responsibility of the individual radar detectorowner to know and understand the laws in your arearegarding the legality of the use of radar detectors.WARRANTY INFORMATIONConsumer WarrantyThis Whistler Laser-Radar detector is warrantedto the original purchaser for a period of oneyear from the date of original purchase againstall defects in materials and workmanship. This limited warranty is void if the unit is abused, modified, installed improperly, or if the housingand/or serial numbers have been removed.There are no express warranties covering thisproduct other than those set forth in thiswarranty. All express or implied warranties forthis product are limited to the above time.Whistler is not liable for damages arising fromthe use, misuse, or operation of this product.SPEED MONITORINGService Under WarrantyDuring the warranty period, defective units willbe repaired without charge to the purchaser whenreturned with a dated store receipt to the addressbelow. Units returned without a dated storereceipt will be handled as described in section“Service Out Of Warranty.” Due to the specialized equipment necessary fortesting a Laser-Radar receiver, there are noauthorized service stations for Whistler branddetectors other than Whistler.When returning a unit for service, please followthese instructions:1. Dual Alert LED Periscope - provides addedvisual alerts of threats ahead.INSTALLATIONMounting Guidelines•Mount the unit as low as possible near the center of the windshield. •Do not mount the unit behind wipers, ornaments, mirrored sunscreens, etc. These obstructions have metal surfaces which can affect radar and laser signals and reduce critical warning time. (Regular tinted glass does not affect reception).•Some windshields have an Instaclear™or Electriclear™type coating, which affect radar signals. Consult your dealer or the owner’s manual supplied with your vehicle to determine if your windshield has this coating.• Avoid placing the unit in direct contact with the windshield.• To reduce the possibility of theft, conceal yourunit when not in use.IIMMPPOORRTTAANNTT: Make sure the unit is levelFEATURE DESCRIPTIONSWindshield Mounting•Install the two suction cups and rubber bumper onto the bracket by fitting them into their holes.• Press the suction cups onto the windshield at the location you have chosen.Important: Some newer cars have a plastic safety coating on the inside of the windshield. Thewindshield bracket may leave permanent marks onthis type of surface. To find out if your vehicle hasthis type of windshield, check the owner’s manual orask your dealer. We recommend that you do notleave the suction cup bracket on the window in directsunlight. If the detector is removed, this maycause blistering of the dash in some vehicles.• Slide the detector onto the bracket until it locks into place.•If necessary, the unit may be leveled by bending thewindshield bracket. Press the bracket release buttonand remove the detector before bending.Power Cord Connection•Plug the small end of the power cord into the unit’s power jack.• Plug the large end into the vehicle’s cigarette lighter.NNoottee::Cord fits tightly into detector. Wheninstalling the cord, expect some resistance. Fuse ReplacementThe lighter socket plug is equipped with areplaceable 2 amp 3AG fuse located behind thesilver tip. To replace the fuse, carefully unscrewthe tip of the plug.IImmppoorrttaanntt::Unscrew slowly. The tip contains aspring which may fly out when disassembling.Insert the new fuse with the spring and screw onthe tip. With use, screw cap on plug may loosen.Retighten occasionally.INSTALLATION CONT.OPERATIONIntegrated Real Voice®When selected, Real Voice®will be used toarticulate the following:1. Band Identification2. Safety Warning System messages3. Feature SelectionNote: In certain cases the voice message does notreplicate the text message.Auto Quiet ModePressing QUIET before a radar signal is detectedprovides an alternate alert pattern, consisting of fourbeeps (indicating X, K, Ka or Safety Radar) followedby clicking. The clicking will continue for as long asthe detected signal is present or any new signal isdetected within 20 seconds, becoming more rapidas the strength of the signal increases.• Press Quiet (before a signal is detected) to engage Auto Quiet. • Once the Auto Quiet mode is engaged, you may cancel the audio alarm by pressing Quiet.•Press Quiet (when the unit is not alarming) tocancel Auto Quiet mode.Quiet ModeQuiet cancels audio during an alert and any newalert within 20 seconds. After 20 seconds,approximately 2 beeps are provided on any newalert and unit then remains quiet.•Press Quiet to cancel the audio.• Press Quiet a second time during an alert torestore the standard audio alert pattern; or turn theunit off, then on.OPERATIONCity/City 1/City 2 ModeWhistler’s Three Stage City Mode is designed toreduce the annoyance of automatic dooropeners, intrusion alarms and other devices whichshare frequencies with police radar. Generally, Xband is used for these devices.• Press City button to cancel Highway Mode and engage City Mode. • Press City button again to enter City 1 Mode • Press City button again to enter City 2 Mode • Pressing City button a fourth time cancels City 2 Mode and returns the unit to Highway Mode.In City Mode, weak speed/safety radar signalsgive an initial alarm of two beeps, and thenremains quiet unless the signal becomes verystrong. When the signal strength increases, twoadditional beeps are provided. City 1 and City 2Modes operate the same as Highway Mode, butin City 1 Mode, only the X band sensitivity islowered. In City 2 Mode, X-band is not detected.Caution: Some towns/small cities may still beusing X band radar. City Modes do not changethe audio alert for laser or VG-2.Highway ModeHighway mode provides full audio warnings anytime radar (X, K, Ka, Safety Radar) or lasersignals aredetected, and is recommended foropen road driving.For more information on City and Highway modes,please visit our F.A.Q. page on our website:www.whistlergroup.comOPERATIONTeach/Tutorial ModeProvides simulated alerts for each type of signal.• Press City and Quiet buttons simultaneously• Display Shows: • Press Dark button to exit.Dual LED Alert PeriscopeWhistler’s new Dual LED Alert Periscope providesan added attention getting visual alert. The twoextra LED’s flash on and off when the unit alarmsto provide a unique visual alert. This alert can beprogrammed, through the Option Select Mode to:1. flash for all alarms, 2. remain on, or 3. turn LEDsoff completely.OPERATIONVG-2 ModeSee Option Select Mode to turn this featureon/off. When a VG-2 signal is detected, the VG-2is sounded and the display flashes “VG-2”. After3 seconds the audio is canceled and the displayno longer flashes. This cycle is repeated if theVG-2 signal is again detected. During the period a VG-2 signal is detected, aradar signal cannot be detected. However,because the VG-2 alert has confirmed that apatrol car is nearby, you are already aware of thepotential for speed monitoring and can adjustyour speed accordingly. Laser detection is notaffected while a VG-2 signal is detected. (Seepage 15 for more information)Vehicle Battery Saver ModeThe Vehicle Battery Saver Mode automaticallyshuts off your detector after 3 hours. The timeris reset if the detector is turned off, unpluggedor any button is pressed before the timer hasexpired. The detector will alert you with anaudible and visual warning before it shuts off.During this warning, you can momentarily resetthe timer by pressing any button. If the unit hasautomatically turned itself off, press any buttonto turn the unit back on.Refer to “Option Select Mode” for instructionsfor deactivating battery saver mode feature. OPERATIONOption Select Mode Entering Option Select Mode allows you to customizeoptions such as Tone Select, Abbreviated Power UpSequence and VG-2 Mode. Press the Menu button to enterOption Select Mode. When selecting options, the Dark orQuiet buttons must be pressed within 20 seconds or OptionSelect Mode will automatically be exited. To enter:Press and hold Menu button to exit Option Select Mode.OPERATIONStay Alert FeatureThe Stay Alert Feature is designed to test a driver’salertness. To engage (when the unit is not alarming) :• Press and hold the City button forapproximately 2 seconds. Release the buttonduring or immediately after the alert is given.Display shows: Within 30-60 seconds, two beeps are sounded;to show alertness, the driver must press either theCity, Menu, or Quiet buttons within 3-5 seconds. If abutton is pressed within 3-5 seconds, the cycle isrepeated.If a button is not pressed within 3-5 seconds, analarm sounds and the display shows: • Press the Dark button to exit the Stay Alert feature.WARNING!!! Stay Alert is NOT intended as asubstitute for adequate rest. You should NOToperate a vehicle if you are drowsy. Duringextended periods of vehicle operation, you shouldtake frequent breaks. Improper reliance on the StayAlert feature may result in vehicle damage,personal injury or death. NEVER OPERATE AVEHICLE IF YOU ARE DROWSY.SWSSafety Warning System™In communities where transmitters are located,the Safety Warning System™displays over 60text messages.
