It isagainst the law to alter the settings inside theradio to exceed those limitations.  Anyadjustments to your radio must be made byqualified technicians.• To be safe and sure:o Never open your radio’s caseo Never change or replace anything in yourradio except the batteries.• Your radio might cause TV or radiointerference even when it is operatingproperly.  To determine whether your radiois causing the interference, turn it off.  If theinterference goes away, your radio iscausing it.  Try to eliminate the interferenceby moving your radio away from thereceiver.  If you cannot eliminate theinterference, the FCC requires that you stopusing the radio.Safety Guidelines• Audio Accessories:  Do not operate theradio with audio accessories at high volumelevels.  Hearing experts advise againstcontinuous high volume operation.  If youexperience a ringing in your ears, reduce thevolume level or discontinue use.  Alwaysmake sure the radio is turned off beforeplugging audio accessories into theaccessory jack.• Hazardous Environments: Do not operatethe radio in hazardous environments.Explosion or fire may result.  Do not operatethe radio near unshielded electrical blastingcaps.  Under certain conditions, radios caninterfere with blasting operations and maycause an explosion.  Turn your radio OFF toprevent accidental transmission when in ablasting area or in areas posted:  “Turn offtwo-way radios.”  Construction crews oftenuse remote control RF devices to set offexplosives.• Care and Safety:   To clean the radio, use asoft cloth dampened with water.  Do not usecleaners or solvents because they can harmthe body of the unit and leak inside, causingpermanent damage.  Use a dry, lint-freecloth to clean the battery contacts.  Do notsubmerge the unit in water.  If the unit getswet, turn it off and remove the batteriesimmediately.  Dry the battery compartmentwith a soft cloth to minimize potential waterdamage.  Leave the battery compartmentcover off overnight to ensure completedrying.  Do not use the radio until the unit iscompletely dry. picturepicture

This product isa lightweight, palm-sized radio with a uniqueCarabiner design allowing you to “clip” theradio to almost anything and carry it almostanywhere. To install the batteries:1) Make sure your radio is OFF.2) Remove the battery compartment door bysliding it down from the unit.3) Install 3 AA Alkaline batteries (notincluded) into the battery compartment.Be certain to follow the + and – symbols inthe compartment.  Installing the batteriesincorrectly will prevent the unit fromoperating.4) Optional:  Your FRS420 radio can bepowered using an optional NiMH batterypack specifically designed for this model.Remove the alkaline batteries and  installthe battery pack by inserting into thebattery compartment.  Follow theinstructions found with the NiMHaccessory.5) Replace the battery compartment door bypushing it up until it is secure.Low Battery AlertWhen the batteries in the unit are low, the unitwill emit a “low battery” tone indication.Replace the batteries immediately to continueusing the radio.Using Your  RadioIn order to get the most out of your new radio,read this reference guide completely beforeattempting to operate the unit.Turning the Radio On and Adjusting Volume1) Rotate the on/off/volume controlclockwise to turn the unit ON and increasethe speaker volume2) Rotate the on/off/volume controlcounterclockwise to decrease the speakervolume and turn the unit OFF.Adjusting the Sound (Key Beeps)Your radio emits a beep each time one of thebuttons is pressed.  To turn this sound OFF,press PTT while turning on the radio.  To turnthis sound ON, press PTT while turning on theradio again.Choosing a ChannelYour radio has 14 channels and 38 CTCSScodes you can use to talk to others.  In order to

Navigating through the MenuTo access the advanced features of the FRS420,your  radio has a Menu function.1) To enter the Menu, press and hold thecall/menu button for 1 second until theCTCSS code flashes.2) Additional presses of the call/menu buttonwill advance through the menu untilexiting to “normal” operating mode.3) Other methods of exiting the menufunction are:a. Press and hold the call/menu buttonfor 1 second again.b. Press PTT.c. Wait 10 seconds until unitautomatically returns to “normal”mode.Choosing a CTCSS CodeEach of the FRS channels 1-14 may have anyone of the codes 0-38 selected.  Code “0”indicates no CTCSS code selected and yourradio can receive a signal regardless of the codesettings of the transmitting radio.1) Enter the Menu.  The CTCSS code on theLCD display will flash.2) Press the Up or Down button to incrementor decrement the code number displayed.  3) Exit the Menu to return to “normal” mode.Talking on Your RadioTo talk to others using the radio:1) Press and hold the PTT button and speakin a clear, normal voice about 2-3 inchesaway from the microphone.  To avoidcutting off the first part of yourtransmission, pause slightly after pressingthe PTT button before you start talking.2) When you are finished speaking, releasethe PTT buttonTransmitting a Call Alert Tone:Your FRS420 radio is equipped with 5selectable call tones that will be transmittedwhen the call/menu  button is momentarilypressed.To select a call tone:1) Enter the Menu and then press thecall/menu  button once.  The letters CAwill show on the display along with thecurrent call tone number (1-5).2) Press the Up or Down button to incrementor decrement the number to the desired calltone.  Each tone will be heard through thespeaker.3) Exit the Menu.To transmit the selected call alert tone,momentarily press the call/menu button.  Theselected tone will automatically be transmittedfor a fixed length of time.  Note:  Do not holdthe  call/menu button down as this will enterthe Menu mode.Vibrate Alert for Incoming CallsYour FRS420 radio is equipped with a vibratorthat can be used for notification of an incomingcall alert from other Uniden radios equippedwith the same feature.To select the vibrate alert:1) Enter the Menu and then press thecall/menu  button twice.  The VIBRATEicon on the LCD display will be shownalong with ON or OF indicating the vibratealert feature status.2) Press either the Up  or  Down button totoggle the feature On or OFF.3) Exit the Menu.Channel Scan FeatureYour FRS420 radio has a channel scan featurethat allows you to easily scan all 14 channels.When an active channel is detected, the unitcall/menu CTCSS CALL VIBRATE EXIT0-38 1-5 On/Off

Then after a 4 second delay, the unit willcontinue scanning.   Pressing PTT  while thescan is paused on a channel will allow you totransmit on that channel.To turn on channel scanning:Press and hold either the Up or  Down buttonuntil the SCAN icon on the display is shown.The channel number on the display will berapidly cycling through the channels.To turn off channel scanning:Press and hold the Up or Down button until theSCAN icon on the display is off.LCD BacklightThe LCD back light will automatically beturned on with any key press except PTT andcall.  The LCD display will be illuminated for 5seconds before turning off.Auto Squelch FeatureThe FRS420 radio is equipped with anautomatic squelch system which shuts off weaktransmissions and unwanted noise due toterrain conditions or if you have reached yourrange limit.To temporarily disable the Auto Squelch andlisten to the selected channel, rapidly press thePTT button twice.   The channel will remainopen for 4 seconds before the Auto Squelch re-engages or you repeat the double PTT  keypress.Automatic Power Save FeatureYour radio has a unique circuit designed todramatically extend the life of the batteries.  Ifthere is no transmission within 5 seconds, yourradio switches to the Power Save mode.
