Removethe mulcher cover to usethe
side-dischargemowing feature.
8. Onelectric start models,checkthat
all wiring connectionsare cleanand
tight.

9. Checkthe air pressure in the rear
tires (15-20 PSI). Keeptires inflated
equally.

GASOLINEIS HIGHLYFLAMMABLE
AND
ITS VAPORSARE EXPLOSIVE.To help
preventseverepersonalinjuryor propertydamage:
• Follow gasoline safety rules in
Section1: "Safety" of this Manual and
in the separate Engine Owner's
Manual.
• Never removethe gasolinefill cap or
add fuel when indoorsor when engine
is runningor still hot. Allow engine to
cool at least three (3) minutes before
refueling.
• Keep smoking materials, sparks or
flamesfar away from fuel tank and fuel
container.
• Store gasoline in an approved fuel
containerand in a well-ventilatedarea.
Store it safely out of the reach of children. Do not store gasolinewhere vaporscan reach an openspark or flame
or where ignition sourcesare present
(such as hot water or space heaters,
furnaces, clothesdryers, stoves, electric motors,etc.).
• Fill tankto 1/2" below bottomof filler
neckto allow for fuel expansion.Wipe
up spilled gasoline immediately and
movemoweraway from gasolinefumes
before starting engine. Securely replace caps on fuel tank and fuel
container.
10. Removethe fuel cap and checkthe
levelof gasolineaccordingto the instructions in the EngineOwner's

MAKINGTURNS .....

_

The mower turns easily by pushing
the handlebarsin the opposite direction
that you want to turn. Thedifferential
mechanisminside the transaxlewill
allow the inside turning wheelto stop or
slow down while the outsideturning
wheelis poweredby the drive system.
Reducethe wheel speedbeforeturning the mower. Fortight turns, disengagethe WheelDrive Control and manually push the mower through the turn (if
needed,put the GearSelect Leverin
neutral so the wheelsturn freely).
MOWING TIPS AND HINTS

To avoidinjuryor propertydamage:
• Before mowing, thoroughly inspect
area where mower is to be used and
remove all stones, sticks, wires,
bones,nails and otherforeignobjects.
• Disengage mower blades before
crossinggravel drives, roads, or sidewalks to preventbladesfrom throwing
stonesor otherhazardousobjects.

14

Mow When
LawnIs Dry
To avoidinjury or propertydamage:
For best results, avoid cutting grass
when it is wet. Wet grass tends to form
clumps which interfere with the cutting
action. The besttime to mow is in the
late afternoon or earlyeveningwhenthe
grass is usually dry.
1

Cut Top1/3 of
GrassBlades

/-_

• Maximum safe operating angle
is 150.
• Exceedingmaximum safe operating
angle may cause tipping or loss of
footing.
• Do not mowwet slopes.
• Mow acrossslopes, not up and down.
• Exercise extreme caution when
changingdirectiononslopes.

__'

Cutting morethan 1/3 of grass length
may causethe grassto becomeexcessively dry. In tall grass,it may be necessary to mow at a higher setting andthen
mow againat the desiredheight. NOTE:
Thecutting height is critical to achieving
a well-groomedlawn. You should experiment with various settings to find that
"just right" cutting height.
VaryCuttingPattern

Varythe cutting pattern from week to
weekto help prevent matting of the
grass. Oneweek, mow from north to
south, the next week mow from eastto
west. Overlapseveralinches when
mowing to obtainan evenappearance.
Mowingon Slopes

Do not mow excessivelysteepslopes
(seeWARNINGstatementthat follows).
Slow down and exerciseextremecaution
whenchanging direction on slopes.
Beforemowing on slopes, checkthe engine oil leveland makesure that the level
is at the FULL mark. Maintaininga FULL
oil levelis particularlyimportant when
operatingon slopes as oil can be drained
awayfrom vital engineparts.

MulchingLeaves
• The mower can be usedto mow fallen
leaves.Theleaf particlesfilter down into
the lawn and provideaddedfertilizer.
• The leavesmust be dry in order to be
mulched.
• Usea slower ground speedif the
leavesare not mulched into fine particles.
• If you mulch oakleaves(which add acid
to the soil), add lime to the lawn in the
spring to reducethe acidity of the soil.
KeepMowerBladesSharp
For best mower performance,keepthe
bladessharp. Dull bladeswill tear,
bruise and split the ends of grass. See
bladesharpeninginstructions in Section
5: Maintenance.
CleanMowerFrequently
Cleanthe undersideof the mower deck
frequently to removegrass build-up.
Seemower cleaning instructions
in
Section5: Maintenance.
PrecisionTrimming
Forprecision trimming, usethe slowest gear and inch the mower along by
"feathering"the WheelDrive Control
lever. Or, disengagethe wheeldrive by
releasingthe Wheel DriveControl so that
you can manuallymaneuverthe mower
(if needed,put the GearSelectLever in
neutralso that the wheels turn freely).

Keep sparks and flames away from
the batteryat all times. Ventilatethe
area when chargingor usingthe battery in an enclosedarea.

Cleaning
Clean the battery by removing it from
the tractor and washing with a baking
soda and water solution. If necessary,
scrape the battery terminals with a wire
brush to remove deposits. Coat terminals and exposed wiring with grease or
petroleumjelly to preventcorrosion.

BatteryCare in Service

Battery Failures
Somecommon causesfor batteryfailure
are:

The batteryis sealedand is maintenance-free.Acid levelscannot be
checked.
• Always keepthe batterycables and ter
minals cleanand free of corrosive
build-up.
• After cleaningthe batteryand terminals,
apply a light coat of petroleum jelly or
greaseto both terminals
• Always keepthe rubber boot positioned
overthe positiveterminal to prevent
shorting.
Charging
If the tractor has not beenput into use
for an extendedperiod of time, charge
the battery with an automotive-type 12volt chargerfor a minimum of erie heur
at sixamps.
JumpStarting
IMPORTANT:Neverjump your tiller's
dead batterywith the batteryof a running vehicle.
1. Connectend of one jumper cableto
the positiveterminal of the good battery,
then the other end to the positiveterminal of the deadbattery.
2. Connectthe otherjumper cableto the
negativeterminal of the good battery,
then to the frame of the unit with the
dead battery.

24

• incorrect initial activation
• undercharging

• freezing
IMPORTANT:Thesefailures are NOT
covered by your tractor's warranty.

BatteryStorage
Chargebatteryfully. The battery loses
some of its chargeeachdaywhen the
unit is not used.
IMPORTANT:NEVERstore batterywithout a full charge.Rechargebatterybefore returningto service or everytwo
months, whicheveroccursfirst.
Whenstoring unit for extendedperiods,
disconnect batterycables.Removing
batteryfrom unit is recommended.
