Getting StartedMounting the Charging CradleMount the Charging Cradle to either a counter or wall.To counter:Attach the Charging Cradle using the mountingscrews and washers as follows.To wall:Apply the Charging Cradle to the wall and insertthe two mounting screws into the larger holes ofthe Charging CradlePush down the Charging Cradle until it is firmly seated.When you remove the Charging Cradle from thewall, loosen the screws and push the ChargingCradle up.Attaching the AntennaApply the antenna to the radio as shown. Be sure the antenna is firmly seated.Attaching the Rechargeable BatteryPackSnap the battery release clip out andremove the alkaline battery case. Thenplace the rechargeable battery pack onto theback of the radio. Attaching the BeltclipHold the beltclip in the direction asillustrated.Apply it to the hanger piece on the backof the radio. Charging the Battery PackYour marine radio is powered by a specially designed Ni-MHbattery pack.• Before operating the MHS350, charge the Ni-MH battery pack for4 hours without interruptionwith the Adapter.Plug one end of the AC adapter into thewall outlet and the other end into theAdapter jack on the side of the ChargingCradle.Make sure your radio is OFF, and place theradio in the front of the Charging Cradle. Youcan also charge another battery at the sametime. Place it in the back of the ChargingCradle.Charge the battery for 4 hours.• The charger won’t overcharge the battery pack.After 4 hours without interruption, the LED onthe Charging Cradle turn off and charging iscompleted.•Be sure to replace the rubber cap after charging in order tosecure the waterproof seal.•The radio will not charge the battery while on and receivingincoming voice traffic.• When you mount the Charging Cradle on your boat, use the DCadapter instead.• The jack is for charging only. Operation• See “Controls and Indicators” (page 2) for button, knob, and keypositions.• When you turn On your MHS350, it is automatically tuned tochannel 16, the United States Coast Guard frequency for dis-tress, safety, and calling.• When you press any button (except PTT), a short tone sounds.Turning On the Unit and Setting SquelchBefore you turn On the unit, turn thesquelch (SQ) knob fully counterclockwise.Then, turn On the unit by turning theVolume/Power (VOL) knob clockwiseuntil you hear a hissing sound.Turn the SQknob clockwise, just until thehissing sound stops. Use the knob to adjustto the desired squelch level. Think of thesquelch control as a frequency gate whichcontrols access to weak or strong signalsdepending on its setting.• To listen to a weak or distant station,turn the knob counterclockwise. Triple WatchTriple Watch mode monitors channels 16 and 9 for a signal whileyou listen to the currently selected channel. The marine radiochecks channel 16 and 9 for activity every 2 seconds.To select Triple Watch mode, press andhold the 16/9/TRIbutton for 2 seconds. A double confirmation tone sounds andTRI appears on the display.To exit from Triple Watch, press andhold the 16/9/TRIbutton for 2 seconds.A double confirmation tone sounds andTRI disappears.• While in Triple Watch mode, you canchange the currently selected channelusing the ▲or ▼button.• A momentary press of the 16/9/TRIbutton interrupts Triple Watch mode and remains on 16, or on channel 9 ifyou press once more. Monitoring Weather ChannelsThe MHS350 has 10 preprogrammed emergency/weather channelfrequencies, represented by 0 through 9.To listen to the emergency/weatherchannels in your area, press theWX/ALERTbutton. WX appears on thedisplay.To move up, press the ▲button.To move down, press the ▼button.To exit, press the WX/ALERTbutton. Emergency/Weather AlertEmergency/Weather Alert allows your MHS350 to function as asevere weather warning radio and will also alert you to any local ornational emergencies. If the NOAA issues warning while this fea-ture is turned On, the radio sounds an alert tone. You will then hearthe emergency/weather broadcast. You can set this feature on bothmarine channel or weather channel.To use Emergency/Weather Alert, select theemergency/weather channel in your area.Press and hold the WX/ALERTbutton for 2 seconds. A double confirmation tonesounds and  appears.When the unit receives a warning signal,it beeps for 5 seconds.  and the chan-nel number blinks.To turn Off Emergency/Weather Alert,press and hold the WX/ALERTbutton for2 seconds. A double confirmation tonesounds.• When Emergency/Weather Alert is activated, the highest priorityis given this function. SAME AlertSAME (Specific Area Message Encoding) alert function as asevere weather and emergency warning like Emergency/Weatheralert (see page 15). But SAME allows you to receive, interpret, anddisplay the information about the code so you can determine if theemergency might affect your area. This can be set only on weatherchannel. Press and hold the WX/ALERTbutton for2 seconds. A double confirmation tonesounds, and WX and appears.When the unit receives a warning signal,WX and  blinks. The warning level andthe channel number appears alternately.Also you hear an alert tone  correspond-ing to the alert level (There are 8 levels).To turn Off SAME Alert, press and holdthe WX/ALERTbutton for two seconds. FIPS CodeThe 6-gigit Federal Information Processing System (FIPS) codewas established by the National Weather Service (NWS) identifiesgeographic areas in the United Sates. FIPS code allows you toreceive only the SAME alert occurring in a particular area. Toobtain the FIPS code for a particular area, contact the NWS tallfree at 1-888-NWR-SAME (1-888-697-7263). To store the FIPS code:Press and hold the MEM/FIPSkey. The radio enters the registration mode.Select the location number from 01 to 15by pressing the ▲or ▼button.Press the SCANbutton to store thelocation number.Now enter the FIPS code.Press the ▲or ▼button to select thenumber from 1 to 9. The number will beentered when MEM/FIPSis pressed, andthe brinking digit moves to the right. Programming a Channel into MemoryBefore using the scanning feature, you have to program channelsinto memory.Select the channel to enter into memoryby pressing the ▲or ▼button.Press the MEM/FIPSbutton to store the channel. MEM appears on the display.Deleting a Channel from MemorySelect the channel to delete from memory by pressing the ▲or ▼button.Press the MEM/FIPSbutton. MEM disappears from the display.ScanningTo begin scanning the programmedchannels, press the SCANbutton. SCANand TRI appear on the display.To stop scanning, press the SCANbutton once more. SCAN and TRI dis-appear from the display.•  Scanning starts from the lowest to highest channel and stopswhen it finds an active channel. It remains on that channel untilthe transmission ends, then resumes scanning after a 2 seconddelay period.• When in the scan mode, the unit automatically activates theTriple Watch feature. TransmittingTransmission power can be set to either5W or 1W. Press the 1/5W/LOCKbutton to makethe change, then the 5W or the 1Windicator on the display changesaccordingly.To transmit, press and hold the PTT(push-to-talk) key. TX appears on the display.To return to receive, release the PTTkey. TX disappears from the display.• If the PTTkey is pressed for more than 5 minutes, TX startsblinking and the transmission ends. The TX time out tone willsound until the PTTkey is released.• If the battery indicator level is O and the PTTkey is pressed,the radio will not transmit and the TX icon and the channelnumber start blinking. Battery IndicatorWhen the unit is On, battery power is always indicated on the display. There are 6 levels from 5 to 0.Level 5: The battery is nearly discharged.Level 0: The radio cannot transmit. If the bat-tery level drops to level 0 duringtransmitting, the transmission will becanceled.Almost Empty: LO appears on the display.Non of the key is effective,and the radio cannot neithertransmit nor receive.Charge the radio or install anew battery immediately.Key LockTo prevent accidental entries, you can lock the keypad.Press and hold the 1/5W/LOCKbutton for 2 seconds. A doubleconfirmation tone sounds. LOCK appears on the display.To unlock the keypad, press and hold the 1/5W/LOCK buttonagain for 2 seconds. A double confirmation tone sounds.
