Getting started3Battery installationInstall the battery as shown below.Plug the battery connector securely into the socket inside the handset battery compartment, matching the color-coded label.Place the battery with the label THIS SIDE UP facing up and the wires inside the battery compartment.Align the cover flat against the battery compartment, then slide it towards the center of the handset until it clicks into place.Charge the handset by placing it in the charger. The CHARGE light is on when the handset is charging.1.2.3.4.If the handset will not be used for a long time, disconnect and remove the battery to prevent possible leakage.To purchase replacement batteries, visit our website at www.vtechcanada.com or call 1 (800) 267-7377.••1 234CHARGE lightremains on when charging.Getting started4Battery chargingOnce you have installed the battery, the screen indicates the battery status (see the table below). If necessary, place the handset in the charger to charge the battery. For best performance, keep the handset in the telephone base or charger when not in use. The battery is fully charged after 16 hours of continuous charging. See the table on page 58 for battery operating times.If the screen is blank or displays Place in charger, you need to charge the handset without interruption for at least 30 minutes to give the handset enough charge to use the telephone for a short time. When the battery is low, the handset displays Low battery along with a flashing icon. If you are on a call in low battery mode, the handset plays short beeps to alert you.The following table summarizes the battery charge indicators and actions to take.Battery indicators Battery status ActionThe screen is blank, or displays Place in chargerand flashes.Battery has no or very little charge. Getting started5Installation optionsYour telephone base is ready for tabletop use. If you want to mount your telephone on a wall, swivel the wall mount bracket down to connect with a standard dual-stud telephone wall mounting plate. If you do not have this mounting plate, you can purchase one from many hardware or consumer electronics retailers. You may need a professional to install the mounting plate.Tabletop to wall mount installationPlug one end of the telephone line cord into the telephone line jack on the bottom of the telephone base. Plug the small end of the power adapter into the jack on the bottom of the telephone base.1.Press in as the arrow indicate. The bracket will detach from the telephone base. Swivel it down into wall mount position, making sure it clicks into place.2.Side viewGetting started6Press the hook and remove the handset tab from the telephone base. If necessary, untie the bundled telephone cord and power adapter cord. If you turn call screening on, you hear the incoming message. While monitoring an incoming message, you can answer the call by pressing /FLASH or on the handset. Your telephone’s built-in digital answering system messages and voicemail messages are separate. Each alerts you to new messages differently. If and New voicemail display on the handset and the telephone base, your telephone service provider is indicating that it has new voicemail for you. To listen to your voicemail, you typically dial an access number provided by your telephone service provider, followed by a security code or PIN. Some telephone service providers bundle or combine multiple services like voicemail and call waiting, so you may not be aware that you have voicemail. To check what services you have and how to access them, contact your telephone service provider. To use your voicemail service rather than your answering system, turn off your answering system. To use your answering system rather than your voicemail service, contact your telephone service provider to deactivate your voicemail service. You can also use your telephone answering system and voicemail together by setting your built-in answering system to answer before voicemail answers as described below. To learn how to program your voicemail settings, contact your telephone service provider. Then, if you are on a call, or if the answering system is busy recording a message and you receive another call, the second caller can leave a voicemail message.Set your answering system to answer calls at least two rings earlier than your voicemail is set to answer. Appendix83About cordless telephonesPrivacy: The same features that make a cordless telephone convenient create some limitations. Telephone calls are transmitted between the telephone base and the cordless handset by radio waves, so there is a possibility that the cordless telephone conversations could be intercepted by radio receiving equipment within range of the cordless handset. For this reason, you should not think of cordless telephone conversations as being as private as those on corded telephones.Electrical power: The telephone base of this cordless telephone must be connected to a working electrical outlet. The electrical outlet should not be controlled by a wall switch. Calls cannot be made from the cordless handset if the telephone base is unplugged, switched off or if the electrical power is interrupted.Potential TV interference: Some cordless telephones operate at frequencies that may cause interference to televisions and VCRs. To minimize or prevent such interference, do not place the telephone base of the cordless telephone near or on top of a TV or VCR. If interference is experienced, moving the cordless telephone farther away from the TV or VCR often reduces or eliminates the interference.Rechargeable batteries: Exercise care in handling batteries in order not to create a short circuit with conducting material such as rings, bracelets and keys. The battery or conductor may overheat and cause harm.
