Apply the decal in the location shown. 2 IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury, read the following important precautions before using the weight system. 1. Read all instructions in this manual and all warnings on the weight system before using the weight system. Use the weight system only as described in this manual. 9. Always wear athletic shoes for foot protection while exercising. 10. Make sure that the cables remain on the pulleys at all times. If the cables bind as you are exercising, stop immediately and make sure that the cables are on the pulleys. Replace all cables at least every two years. 2. It is the responsibility of the owner to ensure that all users of the weight system are adequately informed of all precautions. 3. The weight system is intended for home use only. Do not use the weight system in any commercial, rental, or institutional setting. 11. Always secure the weight stack with the lock pin and lock after exercising to prevent unauthorized use of the weight system (see LOCKING THE WEIGHT STACK on page 25). 4. Keep the weight system indoors, away from moisture and dust. Place the weight system on a level surface, with a mat beneath it to protect the floor or carpet. Make sure that there is enough clearance around the weight system to mount, dismount, and use the weight system. 12. Always stand on the foot plate when performing an exercise that could cause the weight system to tip. 13. Never release the arms, leg lever, lat bar, leg press, ab strap, or handle while weights are raised. The weights will fall with great force. 5. Inspect and properly tighten all parts regularly. Replace any worn parts immediately. 14. Always disconnect the lat bar from the weight system when performing an exercise that does not use the lat bar. 6. Keep children under 12 and pets away from the weight system at all times. 15. If you feel pain or dizziness at any time while exercising, stop immediately and begin cooling down. 7. The weight system is designed to support a maximum user weight of 300 pounds. 8. Keep hands and feet away from moving parts. WARNING: Before beginning this or any exercise program, consult your physician. This is especially important for persons over the age of 35 or persons with pre-existing health problems. The weight system offers an impressive array of weight stations designed to develop every major muscle group of the body. Whether your goal is to tone your body, build dramatic muscle size and strength, or improve your cardiovascular system, the weight system will help you to achieve the specific results you want. model number and serial number before calling. The model number is WESY3964.1. The serial number can be found on a decal attached to the weight system (see the front cover of this manual for the location of the decal). To avoid a registration fee for any service needed under warranty, you must register the weight system at www.weiderservice.com/registration. Do not dispose of the packing materials until assembly is completed. Make Assembly Easier for Yourself Everything in this manual is designed to ensure that the weight system can be assembled successfully by almost anyone. Before beginning assembly, make sure to read the information on this page. This brief introduction will save you much more time than it takes to read it. The included grease and the following tools (not included) may be required for assembly: • Two adjustable wrenches • One standard screwdriver • One phillips screwdriver Hire an Authorized Service Technician • One rubber mallet To hire an authorized service technician to assemble the weight system, call toll-free 1-800-445-2480. • Soapy water, and clear tape or masking tape. Note: Assembly will be more convenient if you have a socket set, a set of open-end or closed-end wrenches, or a set of ratchet wrenches. Assembly Requires Two Persons For your convenience and safety, assemble the weight system with the help of another person. How to Identify Parts Set Aside Enough Time To help you identify the small parts used in assembly, we have included a PART IDENTIFICATION CHART in the center of this manual. Note: Some small parts may have been pre-attached. If a part is not in the parts bag, check to see if it has been preattached. Assembling the weight system may require several hours. By deciding to make the task enjoyable, assembly will go smoothly. You may want to assemble the weight system over a couple of evenings. Select a Location for the Weight System How to Orient Parts Because of its weight and size, the weight system should be assembled in the location where it will be used. Make sure that there is enough clearance to walk around the weight system as you assemble it. As you assemble the weight system, make sure all parts are oriented exactly as shown in the drawings. Tightening Parts How to Unpack the Box Tighten all parts as you assemble them, unless instructed to do otherwise. To make assembly as easy as possible, we have divided the assembly process into four stages. The parts needed for each stage are found in individual bags. Important: Wait until you begin each stage to open the parts bag for that stage. Place all parts of the weight system in a cleared area and Questions? The Four Stages of the Assembly Process Frame Assembly—You will begin by assembling the base and the uprights that form the skeleton of the weight system. Cable Assembly—During this stage you will attach the cables and pulleys that connect the arms to the weights. Arm Assembly—During this stage you will assemble the arms and the moving parts. Seat Assembly—During the final stage you will assemble the seats, the backrests, and other parts. 5 1 Frame Assembly 1. Before beginning assembly, make sure you understand the information in the box on page 5. Refer to the PART IDENTIFICATION CHART in the center of this manual for help identifying small parts. 1 Insert four M8 x 75mm Carriage Bolts (84) up through the Right Base (1). Identify the Front Weight Guides (136), which have the lock holes closer to the center than the Rear Weight Guides (24). Slide the ten Weights (35), with the pin holes on the indicated side, onto the Weight Guides. Grease Press a Weight Tube Bumper (66) into the Long Weight Tube (36). Insert the Weight Tube into the stack of Weights (35). Make sure the pin on the Weight Tube sits in the groove on the top Weight. Attach the Dip Assist (21) to the Left Upright (5) with the Bolt and an M10 Nylon Locknut (114). If there is any slack in the cables, you will need to remove the slack by tightening the cables. See MAINTENANCE on page 29. 23 ADJUSTMENTS This section explains how to adjust the weight system. See the EXERCISE GUIDELINES on page 30 for important information about how to get the most benefit from your exercise program. Also, refer to the accompanying exercise guide to see the correct form for each exercise. Make sure all parts are properly tightened each time the weight system is used. Replace any worn parts immediately. The weight system can be cleaned with a damp cloth and a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Do not use solvents. CHANGING THE WEIGHT SETTING To change the setting of the weight stack, insert the Weight Pin (119) under the desired Weight (35). Insert the Weight Pin so that the bent end touches the weight stack. Turn the bent end down. Note: Be careful not to scratch yourself when reaching through the hole in a Shroud (15, 25). Do not use a Top Weight (34, not shown) by itself. 35 Note: Due to the cables and pulleys, the amount of resistance at each exercise station may vary from the weight setting. If the cables are overtightened, the top weight will be lifted off the weight stack. If a cable tends to slip off the pulleys often, it may have become twisted. Remove the cable and re-install it. If the cables need to be replaced, see ORDERING REPLACEMENT PARTS on the back cover of this manual. 29 EXERCISE GUIDELINES THE FOUR BASIC TYPES OF WORKOUTS PERSONALIZING YOUR EXERCISE PROGRAM Muscle Building To increase the size and strength of your muscles, push them close to their maximum capacity. Your muscles will continually adapt and grow as you progressively increase the intensity of your exercise. You can adjust the intensity level of an individual exercise in two ways: • by changing the amount of resistance used • by changing the number of repetitions or sets performed. (A “repetition” is one complete cycle of an exercise, such as one sit-up. A “set” is a series of repetitions.) Determining the exact length of time for each workout, as well as the number of repetitions or sets completed, is an individual matter. It is important to avoid overdoing it during the first few months of your exercise program. You should progress at your own pace and be sensitive to your body’s signals. If you experience pain or dizziness at any time while exercising, stop immediately and begin cooling down. Find out what is wrong before continuing. Remember that adequate rest and a proper diet are important factors in any exercise program. WARMING UP The proper amount of resistance for each exercise depends upon the individual user. You must gauge your limits and select the amount of resistance that is right for you. Begin with 3 sets of 8 repetitions for each exercise you perform. Rest for 3 minutes after each set. When you can complete 3 sets of 12 repetitions without difficulty, increase the amount of resistance. Begin each workout with 5 to 10 minutes of stretching and light exercise to warm up. Warming up prepares your body for more strenuous exercise by increasing circulation, raising your body temperature and delivering more oxygen to your muscles. WORKING OUT Toning You can tone your muscles by pushing them to a moderate percentage of their capacity. Select a moderate amount of resistance and increase the number of repetitions in each set. Complete as many sets of 15 to 20 repetitions as possible without discomfort. Rest for 1 minute after each set. Work your muscles by completing more sets rather than by using high amounts of resistance. Weight Loss To lose weight, use a low amount of resistance and increase the number of repetitions in each set. Exercise for 20 to 30 minutes, resting for a maximum of 30 seconds between sets. Each workout should include 6 to 10 different exercises. Select exercises for every major muscle group, emphasizing areas that you want to develop most. To give balance and variety to your workouts, vary the exercises from session to session. Schedule your workouts for the time of day when your energy level is the highest. Each workout should be followed by at least one day of rest. Once you find the schedule that is right for you, stick with it. EXERCISE FORM Cross Training Cross training is an efficient way to get a complete and well-balanced fitness program. An example of a balanced program is: • Plan strength training workouts on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. • Plan 20 to 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, such as running on a treadmill or riding on an elliptical or exercise bike, on Tuesday and Thursday. • Rest from both strength training and aerobic exercise for at least one full day each week to give your body time to regenerate. The combination of strength training and aerobic exercise will reshape and strengthen your body, plus develop your heart and lungs. 30 Maintaining proper form is an essential part of an effective exercise program. This requires moving through the full range of motion for each exercise, and moving only the appropriate parts of the body. Exercising in an uncontrolled manner will leave you feeling exhausted. On the exercise guide accompanying this manual you will find photographs showing the correct form for several exercises, and a list of the muscles affected. Refer to the muscle chart on the next page to find the names of the muscles. The repetitions in each set should be performed smoothly and without pausing. The exertion stage of each repetition should last about half as long as the return stage. Proper breathing is important. Exhale during the exertion stage of each repetition and inhale during the return stroke. Never hold your breath. slowly as you stretch and do not bounce. Ease into each stretch gradually and go only as far as you can without strain. Stretching at the end of each workout is an effective way to increase flexibility. Rest for a short period of time after each set. The ideal resting periods are: • Rest for three minutes after each set for a muscle building workout. • Rest for one minute after each set for a toning workout. • Rest for 30 seconds after each set for a weight loss workout. Plan to spend the first couple of weeks familiarizing yourself with the equipment and learning the proper form for each exercise. STAYING MOTIVATED For motivation, keep a record of each workout. List the date, the exercises performed, the resistance used, and the numbers of sets and repetitions completed. Record your weight and key body measurements at the end of every month. Remember, the key to achieving the greatest results is to make exercise a regular and enjoyable part of your everyday life. COOLING DOWN End each workout with 5 to 10 minutes of stretching.
