Version No. : R1.0 Edition Time : 20091030 Manual No. : Contents Chapter For Your Safety General Care Your handset contains delicate electronic circuitry, magnets and battery systems. You should treat it with care and give particular attention to the following points: • Do not allow the handset, battery or accessories to come into contact with liquids or moisture at any time. Do not immerse the handset in any liquid. • Do not place the handset alongside computer disks, credit cards, travel cards and other magnetic media. The information contained on disks or cards may be affected by the handset. • Do not paint the handset. • Do not leave the handset or the battery in places where the temperature could exceed 60°C, e.g. on a car dashboard or a windowsill, behind glass in direct sunlight, etc. • Do not remove the handset‟s battery while the handset is switched on. • Take care not to allow metal objects, such as coins or key rings to contact or short-circuit the battery terminals. • Do not dispose of battery in a fire. The handset‟s Li-ION batteries may be safely disposed of at a Li-ION recycling point. Follow local requirements for recycling. • Do not put the handset‟s battery in your mouth, as battery electrolytes may be poisonous if swallowed. • Do not attempt to dismantle the handset or any of its accessories. • Do not put a battery into a microwave oven, dryer, or high-pressure container. • Do not contact battery directly to an electric outlet or cigarette lighter charger. Use only approved charger units. • Do not pierce battery with a sharp object such as a needle. • Do not disassemble or modify the battery. • Do not use a damaged or deformed battery. • Do not drop, throw, or subject the handset to rough treatment. • Do not solder the battery directly. • Stop using the battery if abnormal heat, odor, discoloration, deformation, or abnormal condition is detected during use, charge, or storage. • Remove the battery whose life cycle has expired from equipment immediately. • This equipment is fitted with an internal battery. Take it to a qualified service engineer when the replacement of the battery is required. • The earpiece may become warm during normal use. Also, the handset itself may become warm while the battery is being charged. • When a handset is in vibration mode, the vibration can sometimes cause the handset to move. • Be careful not to place the handset near heat sources (such as a heater) or too close to the edge of the table. • Power off your phone before you clean it. Use a damp or anti-static cloth to clean the handset. Do not use an ordinary dry cloth or electrostatic cloth. Do not use chemical or abrasive cleaners as these could damage the casing. Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION 1 F870E User Manual • Remember to make backup copies of all important data on your handset. • Remember to recycle: the cardboard packing supplied with this handset is ideal for recycling. Warning: In the unlikely event of a battery leak, take care to keep the battery discharge away from your eyes or skin. If the leakage does come into contact with the eyes or skin, please flush thoroughly in clean water and consult with a doctor. Aircraft Safety • Power off your phone before the airplane takes off. In order to protect airplane‟s communication system from interference, it is prohibited to use mobile phone in flight. If you want to use mobile phone before the airplane takes off, you should get aircrew‟s permission according to safety regulations. • If the mobile phone has the function of automatic timing power-on, please check your alarm setting to ensure that your phone will not be automatically powered on during the flight. Hospital Safety • Power off your phone and remove the battery in areas where the use of handsets is prohibited. • Follow the instructions given by the respective medical facility regarding the use of handsets on their premises. General Guidelines • In some countries, national law prohibits private copying of copyrighted material. Please check the national legislation of the applicable country concerning the use of such material. • Many jurisdictions have laws and regulations about taking pictures in public or private areas and regarding the processing and further use of such pictures. The manufacturer encourages its customers to obey all laws and to respect the personal rights of others. • Please check roaming agreement availability with your service provider. • The use of mobile phones is not allowed in some radiation sensitive areas, such as hospitals, research centers and airplanes. The user is responsible to power-off the device. If there is any uncertainty, you should remove the battery from the handset. • Observe any signs that indicate powering off handsets, such as those near gas stations, or explosives, and power off the handset/device immediately. • If you have a heart condition, be careful with the settings of call vibration or tone volume. • Do not allow children to play with the handset, charger or batteries. • Do not use the handset where blasting is in progress. • Do not try to make a call or conversation while the temperature of charging battery is above 50°C. • Take care not to put your handset in the back pocket of your trousers or skirt and then sit on it. Also, do not put your phone at the bottom of bag where it may subject to excessive weight or pressure. Doing so may damage the LCD and camera lens and cause them malfunction. • The operation of some medical electronic devices, such as hearing aids and pacemakers, may be affected if a handset is used next to them. Observe any caution signs and the manufacturer‟s recommendations. • Do not leave the handset discharged or without a battery for a long time, otherwise some data may be erased. 2 Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION F870E User Manual • Your phone contains metal, which may cause you an itch, a rash or eczema depending on your physical condition. Road Safety • You must exercise proper control of your vehicle at all times. Give your full attention to driving. • Observe all of the recommendations contained in your local traffic safety documentation. • Pull off the road and park before making or answering a call, if driving conditions require so. Check if local laws and/or regulations restrict the use of handsets while driving. • You MUST NOT stop on the hard shoulder of a motorway to answer or make a call, except in an emergency. • Power off your handset at a refueling point, such as a gas station, even if you are not refueling your own car. • Do not store or carry flammable or explosive materials in the same compartment as the handset. • Electronic systems in vehicle, such as anti-lock brakes, speed control and fuel injection systems are not normally affected by radio transmissions. The manufacturer of such equipment can advise if it is adequately shielded from radio transmissions. If you suspect vehicle problems caused by radio transmissions, consult your dealer and do not power on the handset until it has been checked by a qualified technician. Vehicles Equipped with an Airbag An airbag inflates with great force. Do not place objects, including either installed or portable wireless equipment, in the area over the airbag or in the airbag deployment area. If in-vehicle wireless equipment is improperly installed and the airbag inflates, serious injury could result. Third Party Equipment The use of third party equipment or accessories, not made or authorized by ZTE, may invalidate the warranty of your handset and also adversely affect the phone‟s safety/operation. Radio Frequency (RF) Energy Your handset is a low-power radio transmitter and receiver. When powered on, it intermittently receives and transmits radio frequency (RF) energy (radio waves). The transmit power level is optimized for the best performance, and automatically reduces in the areas with better reception. Exposure to radio frequency energy Radio wave exposure and Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) information: • The handset is designed to comply with safely, requirements for exposure to radio waves. This requirement is based on scientific guidelines that include safety margins designed to assure the safety of all persons, regardless of age and health. • The radio wave exposure guidelines employ a unit of measurement known as the Specific Absorption Rate, or SAR. Tests for SAR are conducted using a standardized method with the phone transmitting at its highest certified power level in all used frequency bands. • While there may be differences between the SAR levels of various ZTE phone models, they are all designed to meet the relevant guidelines for exposure to radio waves. Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION 3 F870E User Manual • The SAR limit recommended by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), is 2.0 W/kg averaged over ten (10) grams of tissue. • The highest SAR value for this model phone tested for use at the ear is W/kg (10g). Emergency Services To make an emergency call in any country: 1. Ensure that your handset is on and in service. 2. Press End Key as many times as needed to clear the display and ready the device for calls. 3. Enter the official emergency number for your present location, for example, 112 (the international emergency number). 4. Press Send Key to dial the number. Follow instructions received and do not end the call until told to do so. When the (U)SIM card is not inserted, tap SOS and then enter the official emergency number for your present location. Press Send Key or tap to dial the number. Or you can tap to power on the phone, and then make the emergency call like any other ordinary call. Notes: • Tell the operator which service you require: Police, Ambulance, Fire Brigade, Coastguard or Mountain Rescue Service. Tell them where you are and remain stationary to maintain contact if possible. • Due to the nature of the cellular system, the connection of emergency calls cannot be guaranteed. You should never rely solely on any wireless device for essential communications like medical emergencies. Information on Privacy Camera usage and photo/audio/video recordings carried out with the handset can offend the confidentiality of the subjects. The user therefore is held to respect legislation in confidentiality matter and remains the only responsible subject in case of eventual violations of the enforced norm. You F870E mobile phone operates in Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) or 2G, and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) or 2.5G networks and achieves seamless handover between these networks. Empowered by the modern technology, F870E helps you realize high speed connectivity on the go. In addition, the touchscreen design and accelerometer make F870E a phone easy to maneuver and ideal for enjoying multimedia entertainment. Starting Up Installing the (U)SIM Card You can obtain a (U)SIM card from a mobile communication service provider when you sign on as a subscriber. 1. Press and hold End Key to power off the phone. 2. Remove the back cover of the phone. i. User one fingernail to hook the bottom right corner of the back cover, as shown in the following picture. See Getting Started-Starting Up-Removing the battery. 4. Insert the (U)SIM card into the card holder with its metal contacts facing the phone, as shown in the following picture. 8 Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION F870E User Manual Notes: A (U)SIM card can be easily damaged if its metal contacts become scratched. Therefore, take special care when holding or inserting it. Disconnect the charger and other accessories from the phone before inserting or removing the (U)SIM card. When inserting the (U)SIM card, make sure that the metal contacts face to the phone and the cut corner is at the top left, as shown on your phone. Inserting the Memory Card The memory card gives your phone a larger memory capacity. You can save more multimedia files and use it to store any other files. Notes: Your phone can support a memory card with capacity up to 8GB. 1. Power off the phone and remove its back cover and battery. See Getting Started-Starting Up-Installing the (U)SIM card. 2. Hold the memory card by the edges and carefully insert it into the memory card slot with the cut edge oriented as shown in the picture. Installing the Battery The in-box lithium ion battery can be immediately used after unpacking. A new battery will have the best performance after 3 full charge/discharge cycles. 1. Power off the phone and remove the back cover. See Getting Started-Starting Up-Installing the (U)SIM card. 2. Insert the battery with the contacts located against the gold springs. 3. Push down the battery until it clicks into place. 10 Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION F870E User Manual Notes: The phone automatically switches off if the battery voltage is too low. When not using the battery for a long period, remove it from the phone and store it in a cool dry place. Removing the Battery 1. Make sure the phone is powered off. 2. Use a fingernail to hook the edge of the battery, as shown in the picture. 3. Lift the battery up to remove it. Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION 11 F870E User Manual Charging the Battery Your phone is powered by a rechargeable battery. The battery is not fully charged when unpacked, but there may be enough power to power your phone on. Please use up the power completely before recharging the battery for the first time. 1. Insert the charger's USB adapter into the USB jack of the phone. See the following picture. 2. Connect the charger to a standard AC wall outlet. 3. Remove the charger from both the wall outlet and the phone once the charging is completed. Caution: Charging is only possible within the temperature range of 0℃ to 45℃. It takes 2~3 hours to fully charge the battery. 12 Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION F870E User Manual Removing the (U)SIM Card 1. Press and hold End Key to power off the phone. 2. Remove the back cover and the battery. See Getting Started-Starting Up-Installing the (U)SIM card. 3. Slide the (U)SIM card out of the card holder, as shown in the following picture. Removing the Memory Card 1. Make sure the phone is powered off and remove the back cover and the battery. 2. Slide down gently and remove the card from the slot. Accessing the Memory Card on the Phone 1. Press Menu Key in standby mode to open the main menu. 2. Tap File manager. 3. From the File manager interface, tap the left drop-down menu and select Tflash card to access the contents on your memory card. Tapping on the widgets you have drop to the desktop will open more options. For example, you can drag and drop the Clock and alarm widget to the desktop. You can navigate the menus by tapping on the touch screen or by using the hardware keys. 1. From the standby mode, press Menu Key to open the main menu. The main menu is divided into four screens, with 9 items in each screen. To switch between each screen, you can Tap on one of the four dots below the menu icons. Flick right or left. 2. Tap on an item, or select the item with the Navigation Keys and then confirm by pressing OK Key to launch the application or enter into its submenu. 3. In the submenu, go on to tap, flick or drag on the touch screen, or use Navigation Keys to select and OK Key to confirm. For example: 1. Press Menu Key to open the main menu in idle mode. 2. Tap Settings. 3. Tap Profiles. 4. Tap Outdoor to change the current profile. You can also change the profile by using the keypad only: 1. Press Menu Key to open the main menu in idle mode. 2. Use Up/Down Key and Left/Right Key to select Settings. 3. Press OK Key to enter the settings menu. 4. Use Right Key to switch to Profiles tab. 5. Press Down Key to select Outdoor. 6. Press OK Key to change the profile. Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION 18 F870E User Manual Notes: In this user manual, the steps needed to reach a certain menu or interface are shown in a condensed form, for example: Settings > Profiles > Outdoor. Multitasking Like a computer, your F870E is capable of handling several applications simultaneously. When in an application, you can press Menu Key to return to the main menu or the most recent submenu you accessed. Then you can go to whichever menu you need to launch new applications or just return to standby mode. The old application would still be running backstage. To reopen the application, or switch from one application to another, tap to open the list of all running applications (as shown above) and select the one you need by tapping on it. Tap to cancel and return to the current interface. Notes: Notifications, such as new messages and E-mails, will also be displayed when you tap Making a Call Making a Voice Call 1. Press Yes Key or select Dial in the menu screen to enter into the following interface. Tips: You can also from the standby mode to get the dialing interface. 2. Enter the phone number by tapping the on-screen keypad, pressing the hardware keyboard or tapping the number you dialed before above the keypad. Tap to delete the digits. 3. Tap or press Yes Key to make the voice call, or tap to cancel the call. 4. Press No Key to end the call. Tap or press Yes Key to make the call. Calling an Extension Number 1. Enter the phone number with the on-screen keypad. 2. Tap three times to enter “P”. 3. Enter the extension number. 4. Press Yes Key or tap Calling a Number from Contacts 1. Press Menu Key and select Contacts. 2. Scroll up and down the contacts list with your finger or Up/Down Key. 3. Touch and hold on the contact you want to call. 4. From the pop-up menu, select to give the contact a voice call. Tips: You can also select or to send an SMS or MMS to the contact. Calling a Previously Dialed Number 1. Tap Calls from the main menu. 2. Tap Last call cost to display the calls you have dialled previously. 3. Tap on a number you dialled. 4. Tap to make a voice call to the selected number, or tap for a video call. Notes: Tap or to send an SMS or MMS to the number. Calling a Speed Dial Number From the on—screen keypad interface, tap and hold a numeric key (1~9) to make a call to the corresponding speed dial number. Notes: The number key 1 is reserved only for voicemail number. Set speed dial 1. From the main menu, go to Contacts > All contacts. 2. Select a number that has not been assigned from the screen above by tapping on it or by selecting it with Navigation Keys and OK Key. Notes: Tap on a number that has already been assigned to a phone number will pop up the options to Replace to the former speed dial setting. 4. Select a contact and his/her phone number on the screen or with Navigation Keys and OK Key. 5. When you are done with the setting, tap to return to the contact list. Tips: You can also select a contact in All Contacts and tap for the contact. from the pop-up menu to set speed dial Answering a Call Answering a Voice Call Press Yes Key or tap on to answer the call. Tips: You can tap to mute the ring tone. When you have inserted an earphone to your F870E, you can use the microphone on the earphone to talk if there is an incoming call. Just press the button on the earphone cord to answer it. Caution: Adjust the volume to a moderate level to avoid injury to your ear. See Basic Operations-Answering a Call-Setting Volume. Setting Volume During a call, press Volume Keys (See Getting Started-Key Definition) to adjust the call volume. Rejecting a Call Press End Key or tap caller. to reject the call. In-Call Options Tap during a call for more options. Options vary depending on the current situation: Mute/Unmute: Turn off/on your microphone. When you turn the microphone off, the caller cannot hear you while you can still hear the caller. Hold/Active: Put the call on hold or retrieve the call. Record: Record the current conversation. When recording, tap to pause or tap and select to stop and save the audio record. Bluetooth headset: Switch between your Bluetooth headset and your handset earpiece. DTMF on/DTMF off: Enable or disable sending DTMF tone. Entering Text You can enter text with the on-screen keypad or by using the hardware keyboard. Using the Hardware Keyboard Your phone comes with a hardware keyboard, which is similar to a standard computer keyboard. To use the keyboard, slide the screen panel to the right to reveal the keyboard. • To change input language, press and select the language you need by tapping on the options or pressing Navigation Keys. You can change among English, French and Spanish. • To change input case, press . You can change among the following input cases: uppercase mode, lowercase mode and initial capital mode. • To enter letters, press the alphabetic keys with your fingers or thumbs. 22 Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION F870E User Manual Notes: For certain languages, pressing a specific letter key may result in multiple accented character options (like á, ü, é,ê, etc). Tap on the screen to select the letter you need. • To enter a single uppercase letter, press • To enter a number or symbol (labeled at the upper right of each key), press corresponding key. Press before pressing the alphabetic key. and then press the twice consecutively to enter numbers or symbols. • Press to open the symbol pad. Tap on a symbol to insert it into the text. • To move the cursor, press the Navigation Keys or the arrow keys • Press to delete the character before the cursor. • Press to start a new paragraph. Using the Touch Screen Your phone provides a small on-screen keypad, as shown above, for you to enter text. • Tap to change the input language. • Tap to change input mode between abc, ABC, 123 and En/Es (depending on the input language you have selected). • Tap to choose space, symbols and punctuation marks. Tap to return to the original keypad. Tips: The symbols and punctuation marks are divided into three pages. Tap Page1, Page2 and Page3 to switch between pages. indicates that the symbol keypad is locked and you can input multiple symbols, punctuations and spaces consecutively. Tap on it to unlock the symbol keypad and you will return to the original keypad after you have entered one symbol, punctuation mark or space. • Tap to delete the character before the cursor; hold it to delete all text before the cursor. • Tap to start a new paragraph. • Tap to hide the touch keypad. Locking the Screen You can use the screen lock to prevent the keys and screens from being pressed accidentally. From any screen, hold Message Key until the following screen appears. Enter address Tap Enter address to input web page address that you want to visit. You can also select from past inputs to visit directly. Bookmark All web page addresses can be saved as bookmarks in your phone. This function allows you to view and edit these bookmarks, and link to the bookmarked web pages. Tap to add a new bookmark. You need to enter the title and address of the bookmark. Tap to delete bookmarks. Tap beside each bookmark to visit that web page. Tap a bookmark to view its title and address. Tap bookmark via SMS, MMS or E-mail. to go to the web page. Tap to send the History This function allows you to check your browsing history. You can view the titles and addresses of the pages you visited; you can also delete the history, link to the page again or add the page to Bookmark. Saved page This function displays the list of pages saved as off-line files. When browsing, tap and select Save page to save the current web page. Browser Settings • Connections: Select the connection setting the browser uses. • Advanced Settings: Change the settings related to animation, images, background music, script, autofill, etc. • Clear Cache: Delete all cache data. • Clear Cookies: Delete all cookie information. • Clear Autofill list: Delete all input history items. • Certificate: View the certificates provided in the browser, including root certificate, CA certificate and trusted certificate. Version info You can check the edition and copyright information of the browser. Recent Calls shows all your call log. • Tap to open options. You can go to dialed call list, received call list, or delete call log or check call duration. • Tap • Tap on a call to view the detail of the call. The alarms can be one-time alarms or repeating alarms. Tap to add an alarm and input the new alarm settings. Tap to save the settings. to mute the alarm ringtone. Tap Tap on an existing alarm to edit its settings. Tap to select alarms to delete. Calendar You can access Calendar from Tools screen or by tapping from standby mode. Initially, the cursor appears on today's date on a monthly calendar according to your handset setting. Tap or to jump to the calendar of last month or next month. Tap on a date to view the schedule of that day. On a date that schedule is arranged, a blue triangle will be displayed on the top left corner of the date, and a green one on the bottom right. To add a new schedule, tap and select schedule type (Appointment, Memo or Anniversary). Input the schedule information (subject, location, time, etc) and tap to save it. In the calendar view, tap to change from month view to week view or from week view to month view. You can also delete schedules, set the calendar view, alarm ringtone and check memory information. Calculator The phone provides a simple calculator for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. During timing, tap to minimize the timer and return to the Tools menu. You can go on with other tasks while the timing continues. When timing is reset or paused, you can tap to switch to Stopwatch. Contacts All contacts You can store contacts with a variety of phone and fax numbers as well as additional address details. Tap to add a new contact. Tap to search for contacts by inputting their names. Tap to open the following options: • Group: Go to contact groups. The default groups include Family, Friends and Work. Tap on a group to view all the contacts in that group. You can add/delete/rename group or set photo/voice call ringtone/video call ringtone for each group. To add a new group, tap . Then enter group name, set group photo, voice call ringtone and video call ringtone. Tap to save and exit. From this folder, you can delete or forward messages to other recipients. User folder You can move your received messages from handset inbox and (U)SIM inbox to the User folder. You can also create new folders in User folder. (U)SIM inbox You can check the SMS saved in your (U)SIM card. Settings You can change the MMS/SMS settings. SMS settings SMS center number: Your service provider presets the service center number for you. Expiration time: Set the length of time in which the message center will attempt to deliver the message until it is received. Delivery report: Select ON/OFF to enable or disable message delivery report. MMS settings Retrieval settings: Select Immediately or Delay to retrieve new MMS automatically or manually. Send mode: You can select Immediately or Delay to send the MMS immediately or defer it for a specified period of time. Delay send time: Set the time to send MMS when you set Delay in Send mode. The maximum delay is 99 hours. Slide time: Set the play time of each page of the MMS. Delivery report: Select ON/OFF to enable or disable message delivery report. Expiration time: Set the length of time in which the message center will attempt to deliver the message until it is received. Receive anonymous message: You can choose to accept or reject anonymous messages. Receive PUSH message: Select ON or OFF to accept or reject PUSH messages. You need to enter the handset code. The default code is 0000. Profiles Your phone provides several predefined user profiles. You can choose a profile according to your surroundings. Supported profiles include: General, Meeting, Outdoors, Silent, and Airplane. Warning: Activating Airplane mode will disable your mobile network connection. You cannot make phone calls or connect to the internet. Tap Edit beside each profile to edit it. You can customize the tones and volume under each profile. Connect • Connect Settings: you can create, edit or delete connection settings for internet access. Contact you service provider for more information. • Access Point Settings: this menu shows the access point list. To modify these settings, please contact your service provider. You can add new access point by tapping • Network Settings: the network that your phone uses is configured automatically. When powered on, the phone automatically connects to the designated network, or automatically connects to a roaming network when you are outside the coverage of your regular network (in which case, you can manually select the local network system). Preferred selection: the default setting is Automatic. You can tap on it and the phone will search and list all networks for you to choose from manually. Call • Videos gateway: set parameters of the video phone, including Gateway number and UUS type. To activate or cancel the service, you must enter the network password provided by your service provider. • Send My Number: this allows you to send or hide your number when making calls. The default is Automatic and this function needs network support. Security • Activate Security Codes: you can activate and deactivate handset code and PIN code. Whichever code you turn on, you must input the code when powering on the handset. • Change Security Codes: you can change PIN code, PIN2 code and handset code. Enter the old code and then input the new code twice. • Fixed Dial Numbers: you can define a list of numbers that you can dial. This information is saved in the (U)SIM card. You cannot dial any number out of the list. Tap Status and enter PIN2 code to turn on/off this function. Tap Dial list and input PIN2 code to edit the fixed dial number list. Bluetooth You can use Bluetooth to connect your handset to wireless earphones, hands free car kits and other compatible devices. You can also transfer files between your phone and other Bluetooth devices such as another phone or a laptop. Not all applications or devices can be supported as Bluetooth is an open forum and different manufacturers adopt different standards and implementation. • Start Bluetooth/Off Bluetooth: turn on/off the Bluetooth function. • Display/Hide Bluetooth: make your phone visible/invisible to other Bluetooth devices. • Find Device: search for Bluetooth devices and create a Bluetooth connection. Tap on a device your phone has found and press Yes to confirm. Enter the correct password to create the connection. • My Device: list all the devices you have made Bluetooth connection with. Contact your service provider. • The battery or battery charger is damaged. Contact the dealer. • The phone‟s temperature is below 0°C or higher than 45 °C. Adjust the battery charging environment to avoid extremes of temperature. • Poor contact between the battery and charger. Check all connectors to make sure all connections have been properly made. • The standby time is related to your service provider system configuration.
