ADSL X6 User Guide 1 ZOOM ADSL X6 Quick Start This Quick Start tells you how to install your X6 with a Windows® PC. Detailed information and installation instructions for Macintosh and Linux are in the User Guide on the CD. The X6 requires that you have ADSL service, which is usually called DSL in the USA. 1 Turn on the Windows computer that you will use for setup. This can be any Windows Vista™, XP, 2000, Me or 98 computer with an available Ethernet port. For Windows Vista only: You must follow these steps to turn on Telnet Client: a Click Start, select Control Panel, then double-click Programs and Features. b In Programs and Features, in the Tasks pane, click Turn Windows features on or off. c At the User Account Control message, click Continue. d In the Windows Features dialog box, select Telnet Client, click OK, and wait while the feature is configured. e In the Uninstall or Change a Program window, click the Close box to exit. 2 Close any open programs, including any antivirus software or pop-up blockers. 3 Insert the supplied CD into the CD drive of your computer. The CD should start automatically. (If the CD does not start automatically, click the Windows Start button, click Run, and then type E:\setup.exe, where E is the letter of your CD drive.) 4 Follow the on-screen prompts for the Install Assistant. Congratulations! Your installation is complete. To test your installation, open your browser and go to a familiar Web site. If your browser works, installation is complete for the computer you used for setup. If you’d like, you can also connect other computers to the X6, as discussed on the next page. If your browser doesn't work, see the Troubleshooting Tips on page 3.
ADSL X6 User’s Guide 2 Note: At this point, if you haven’t already done so, we recommend that you put an ADSL filter on every phone connected to the ADSL phone line. DO NOT put a filter between the X6 and the wall jack that it is connected to. (In some countries, including the UK, a splitter is supplied with the X6. The PHONE line plug of the splitter plugs into the wall jack that has ADSL service, and the X6 plugs into the splitter's MODEM jack, which is not filtered. The PHONE jack, for an optional telephone, is filtered.)
ADSL X6 User Guide 3 Connecting Additional Computers to the X6 You can connect other computers to the X6 two ways. You can use a wired connection by plugging an Ethernet cable between the Ethernet port of your computer (or game station) and any one of the X6’s four Ethernet (LAN) ports, or you can establish a wireless connection from another computer that has Wireless-B or Wireless-G capability. Wired Ethernet Connection 1 Shut down the computer or game station that you want to connect to the X6. 2 Plug an Ethernet cable into one of the X6’s LAN ports and then into the Ethernet port of the computer or game station. Then turn on the computer or game station. 3 Open your Web browser and try to connect to a familiar Web address. Wireless Connection First you should determine whether the computer that you want to connect has built-in wireless capability. Most current notebooks and laptops do; most desktops don’t. If your computer has built-in wireless capability It’s easy to find out if your computer has wireless capability. If it does, your computer will connect automatically to the X6 network. Just turn it on and the message Wireless network detected. Click here for available networks will appear in the task bar in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Click the message box and select zoom. Then open your Web browser and go to a familiar web site. If you don’t get this message and want to check for wireless capability, right-click My Computer and select Properties. Click Hardware, then the Device Manager button. Look for Network Adapter and click the plus (+) sign. If your computer has a built-in wireless device, you’ll see wireless in the list of devices – for example, Ethernet wireless adapter. If a wireless network device isn’t listed, your computer most likely does not have built-in wireless capability. If your computer doesn’t have built-in wireless capability If you want wireless capability, you will need to install a wireless adapter such as a USB or PCI Adapter. For a notebook or laptop you can also use a PC Card adapter. 1 See the instructions that came with your adapter and install it on your computer. 2 Using the configuration application (sometimes called a Configuration Monitor or Manager, or Utility) that came with the adapter, do a site survey or scan to find available networks in your area. (Many configuration manager applications have a Scan button, Scan Network tab or something similar to help you find an available network.) 3 When you do the scan, you will see a list of networks identified by an SSID (Service Set Identifier). Select the Zoom SSID. This is the SSID of the X6 wireless network that you want to use to connect to the Internet. 4 Once connected, open your Web browser and try to connect to a familiar Web address. Setting Up Wireless Security We recommend that you wait until your X6 and any other computers are connected to the network before setting up security. To set up security for your network, the X6 supports WPA2, WPA, or WEP. Please see the User Guide on the CD for setup
ADSL X6 User’s Guide 4 instructions. You will need to know that admin is the User Name and zoomadsl is the Password (in lowercase letters). Setting Advanced Features The options that are set by default when your X6 is installed are sufficient for most users. However, those who want or need to change the X6’s settings can do so using the Advanced Setup page. To open this page, you first log in to the Zoom Configuration Manager: 1 Open your Web browser. Type 10.0.0.2 in the address bar then press Enter. 2 In the login box, type admin for User Name and zoomadsl for Password in lowercase letters. 3 Click the Advanced Setup button at the top of the page. Click a button to choose a feature. For more information about using the Advanced features, please see the User Guide on the CD, Troubleshooting Tips Problem My X6’s LINK light is solidly lit, but my computer cannot connect to the Internet. Check these items: • If you are using an Ethernet port, check that the X6’s LAN light is on. If the light is not on, reboot your computer. If the light is still not on, check that a working Ethernet cable connects from the X6's Ethernet port to an Ethernet port of your computer. • Ensure that you have typed your ADSL username and password correctly. To check your username and password, insert the CD and run the Install Assistant again. Problem My X6’s LINK light continually blinks and does not stay solidly lit. Check these items: • Verify that your service provider has turned on your ADSL service. If you’re not sure, you can place a call to your service provider’s customer support to verify this. • Your X6 may not have connected to your Internet service. Turn off the X6, and then turn it back on and wait a few minutes for the browser to work. Check your connections. • Verify that the X6 is connected to a jack with ADSL service. Also, make sure there isn’t a phone filter between the X6 and the wall jack that the X6 is connected to. • Your phone cord may be defective. Try a different phone cord.
