G-470 User’s Guide24 Chapter 1 Getting Started1.1.2.1 Infrastructure Infrastructure mode allows your ZyXEL Device to connect to a network via an access point (AP). Through the AP, you can access the Internet or the wired network behind the AP.Figure 5 Application: Infrastructure 1.1.2.2 RoamingIn an infrastructure network, wireless stations are able to switch from one BSS to another as they move between the coverage areas. During this period, the wireless stations maintain uninterrupted connection to the network. This is known as roaming. As the wireless station moves from place to place, it is responsible for choosing the most appropriate AP depending on the signal strength, network utilization or other factors. The following figure depicts a roaming example. When Wireless Station B moves to position X, its wireless device automatically switches the channel to the one used by access point AP 2 in order to stay connected to the network.

G-470 User’s GuideChapter 3 Wireless LAN Network 31CHAPTER 3Wireless LAN NetworkThis chapter provides background information on wireless LAN networks.3.1 Wireless LAN Overview The following figure provides an example of a wireless network with an AP. Figure 7 Example of a Wireless NetworkThe wireless network is the part in the blue circle. In this wireless network, devices A and B are called wireless clients. The wireless clients use the access point (AP) to interact with other devices (such as the printer) or with the InternetEvery wireless network must follow these basic guidelines.• Every device in the same wireless network must use the same SSID.The SSID is the name of the wireless network. It stands for Service Set IDentity.• If two wireless networks overlap, they should use a different channel.Like radio stations or television channels, each wireless network uses a specific channel, or frequency, to send and receive information.
G-470 User’s Guide32 Chapter 3 Wireless LAN Network• Every device in the same wireless network must use security compatible with the AP or peer computer.Security stops unauthorized devices from using the wireless network. It can also protect the information that is sent in the wireless network.3.2 Wireless LAN Security Wireless LAN security is vital to your network to protect wireless communications. If you do not enable any wireless security on your ZyXEL Device, the ZyXEL Device’s wireless communications are accessible to any wireless networking device that is in the coverage area. See Section 6.4 on page 61 for more information on configuring wireless security for your device.3.2.1 User Authentication and EncryptionUser authentication is when every user must log in to the wireless network before they can use it. However, every wireless client in the wireless network has to support IEEE 802.1x to do this.Wireless networks can use encryption to protect the information that is sent in the wireless network. Encryption is like a secret code. If you do not know the secret code, you cannot understand the message.3.2.1.1 CertificatesYour ZyXEL Device can use certificates (also called digital IDs) for user authentication. Certificates are based on public-private key pairs. A certificate contains the certificate owner’s identity and public key. Certificates provide a way to exchange public keys for use in authentication. A Certification Authority (CA) issues certificates and guarantees the identity of each certificate owner. There are commercial certification authorities like CyberTrust or VeriSign and government certification authorities. In public-key encryption and decryption, each host has two keys. One key is public and can be made openly available; the other key is private and must be kept secure. Public-key encryption in general works as follows. 1Tim wants to send a private message to Jenny. Tim generates a public key pair. What is encrypted with one key can only be decrypted using the other.2Tim keeps the private key and makes the public key openly available.3Tim uses his private key to encrypt the message and sends it to Jenny.4Jenny receives the message and uses Tim’s public key to decrypt it.
G-470 User’s GuideChapter 3 Wireless LAN Network 335Additionally, Jenny uses her own private key to encrypt a message and Tim uses Jenny’s public key to decrypt the message. The certification authority uses its private key to sign certificates. Anyone can then use the certification authority’s public key to verify the certificates.3.2.1.2 WEP3.2.1.2.1 Data Encryption WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) encryption scrambles all data packets transmitted between the ZyXEL Device and the AP or other wireless stations to keep network communications private. Both the wireless stations and the access points must use the same WEP key for data encryption and decryption. There are two ways to create WEP keys in your ZyXEL Device.• Automatic WEP key generation based on a “password phrase” called a passphrase. The passphrase is case sensitive. You must use the same passphrase for all WLAN adapters with this feature in the same WLAN.For WLAN adapters without the passphrase feature, you can still take advantage of this feature by writing down the four automatically generated WEP keys from the Security Settings screen of the ZyXEL utility and entering them manually as the WEP keys in the other WLAN adapter(s).• Enter the WEP keys manually.Your ZyXEL Device allows you to configure up to four 64-bit or 128-bit WEP keys. Only one key is used as the default key at any one time.3.2.1.2.2 Authentication Type The IEEE 802.11b/g standard describes a simple authentication method between the wireless stations and AP. Three authentication types are defined: Auto, Open System and Shared Key.• Open System mode is implemented for ease-of-use and when security is not an issue. The wireless station and the AP or peer computer do not share a secret key (WEP key). Thus the wireless stations can associate with any AP or peer computer and listen to any transmitted data that is not encrypted.• Shared Key mode involves a shared secret key (WEP key) to authenticate the wireless station to the AP or peer computer. This requires you to enable the wireless LAN security and use same settings on both the wireless station and the AP or peer computer.• Auto authentication mode allows the ZyXEL Device to switch between the open system and shared key modes automatically. Use the auto mode if you do not know the authentication mode of the other wireless stations.
G-470 User’s Guide34 Chapter 3 Wireless LAN Network3.2.1.3 IEEE 802.1x The IEEE 802.1x standard outlines enhanced security methods for both the authentication of wireless stations and encryption key management. Authentication can be done using an external RADIUS server.3.2.1.3.1 EAP Authentication EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) is an authentication protocol that runs on top of the IEEE 802.1x transport mechanism in order to support multiple types of user authentication. By using EAP to interact with an EAP-compatible RADIUS server, an access point helps a wireless station and a RADIUS server perform authentication. The type of authentication you use depends on the RADIUS server and an intermediary AP(s) that supports IEEE 802.1x. The ZyXEL Device supports EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS and EAP-PEAP. Refer to the Wireless Security appendix for descriptions. For EAP-TLS authentication type, you must first have a wired connection to the network and obtain the certificate(s) from a certificate authority (CA). A certificate (also called a digital ID) can be used to authenticate users, and a CA issues certificates and guarantees the identity of each certificate owner.3.2.1.4 WPA Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a subset of the IEEE 802.11i standard.WPA improves data encryption by using Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP), Message Integrity Check (MIC) and IEEE 802.1x. WPA and WPA2 use Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) in the Counter mode with Cipher block chaining Message authentication code Protocol (CCMP) to offer stronger encryption than TKIP.Select WEP only when the AP does not support WPA. WEP is less secure than WPA.3.2.1.5 WPA2WPA 2 (IEEE 802.11i) is a wireless security standard that defines stronger encryption, authentication and key management than WPA.

G-470 User’s GuideChapter 5 System Screen 51CHAPTER 5System ScreenThis chapter provides information on the System screen.5.1 TCP/IP Parameters5.1.1 IP Address Assignment Every computer on the Internet must have a unique IP address. If your networks are isolated from the Internet (for instance, only between your two branch offices) you can assign any IP addresses to the hosts without problems. However, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has reserved the following three blocks of IP addresses specifically for private networks. You can obtain your IP address from the IANA, from an ISP or have it assigned by a private network. If you belong to a small organization and your Internet access is through an ISP, the ISP can provide you with the Internet addresses for your local networks. On the other hand, if you are part of a much larger organization, you should consult your network administrator for the appropriate IP addresses.Note: Regardless of your particular situation, do not create an arbitrary IP address; always follow the guidelines above. For more information on address assignment, please refer to RFC 1597, Address Allocation for Private Internets and RFC 1466, Guidelines for Management of IP Address Space.5.1.2 IP Address and Subnet MaskSimilar to the way houses on a street share a common street name, computers on a LAN share one common network number.Where you obtain your network number depends on your particular situation. If the ISP or your network administrator assigns you a block of registered IP addresses, follow their instructions in selecting the IP addresses and the subnet mask.Table 5 Private IP Address Ranges10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
G-470 User’s Guide52 Chapter 5 System ScreenIf the ISP did not explicitly give you an IP network number, then most likely you have a single user account and the ISP will assign you a dynamic IP address when the connection is established. The Internet Assigned Number Authority (IANA) reserved this block of addresses specifically for private use; please do not use any other number unless you are told otherwise. Let's say you select 192.168.1.0 as the network number; which covers 254 individual addresses, from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254 (zero and 255 are reserved). In other words, the first three numbers (in this case, 192, 168 and 1) specify the network number while the last number identifies an individual computer on that network.Once you have decided on the network number, pick an IP address that is easy to remember, for instance, 192.168.1.2, for your device, but make sure that no other device on your network is using that IP address. The subnet mask specifies the network number portion of an IP address. Your device will compute the subnet mask automatically based on the IP address that you entered. You don't need to change the subnet mask computed by the device unless you are instructed to do otherwise.5.2 System Settings Click System to open the System Settings screen.Figure 25 System SettingsThe following table describes the labels in this screen.
