INFORMATIONS During their stay in the maternity ward, baby is weighed every day to monitor weight loss and gradual return to birth weight. When they arrive home, it is advisable to weigh them 1 to 3 times a week, always under the same conditions. Monitoring weight is one of the main indicators of good health. Delayed or excessively fast growth is sometimes a sign of a disease or disorder. Regular monitoring makes it possible to see changes in weight, particularly when your baby is struggling to feed. Most infant scales only cover a limited period of time. That is why BewellConnect® had developed MyBabyScale®, the smart, scalable, connected wireless baby scale that lets you keep track of your child’s weight from birth all the way to adolescence. 22 BewellConnect - BW-SCB1 - User Manual - 072016 2-1. BABY’S WEIGHT A baby grows the most in its first year, gaining around 6 kg in the first 12 months then just 3 kg the following year. It is important to avoid excess weight gain by only feeding your baby what he or she needs. However, bear in mind that a baby grows in stages, with pauses, and that there are great height and weight variations between individual children. 2-2. CHILD’S GROWTH CURVE Regularly monitoring your child’s growth makes it possible to create curves (Height and weight, CF 4. APP). It is very important to attentively monitor baby’s weight gain. A baby loses weight in the three or four days following birth. This is a normal phenomenon. As soon as baby has returned to its birth weight, growth will continue evenly Using the MyBabyScale® app, you can create curves tracking your child’s weight and height (according to WHO standards) and show them to your doctor regularly. BewellConnect - BW-SCB1 - User Manual - 072016 23 The table opposite shows the recommended weights for a healthy baby. AGE WEIGHT GAIN 0 to 3 months 25 to 30g/day 3 to 6 months 20 to 25g/day 6 to 9 months 15 to 25g/day 9 to 12 months 10 to 15g/day Warning Do not put your child on a diet without consulting a doctor first. Analysis and interpretation of BMI data must be performed by a healthcare professional (general practitioner, paediatrician, school doctor). 2-3. ABOUT BMI - BODY MASS INDEX A study by American researchers from Harvard University found that if BMI increases during the first 6 months, the child is more likely to suffer from premature obesity at 3 years. BMI is an indicator of corpulence and potential medical risks, based on the ratio of weight to height. The corpulence curve helps to identify children who are obese or at risk of becoming so: the child is obese if their BMI is above the 97th percentile. BMI increases in the first year and then decreases until the age of 6 before increasing again. This rise, which occurs on average at 6 years, is called adiposity rebound. The earlier the adiposity rebound takes place, the greater the risk of obesity. An upward percentile crossing is a warning sign. 2-4. CALCULATING BMI IN CHILDREN The child’s BMI is calculated using the following formula: BMI = 24 BewellConnect - BW-SCB1 - User Manual - 072016 weight (in kilograms) / (height (in metres) x height (in metres)). For example, for a 9-year-old girl weighing 19 kg and measuring 1.10 metres, the BMI will be: BMI = 19 / (1.1 x 1.1) or 19 / 1.21 = 15.70. As you can see, the resulting BMI for the child in question (15.70) is entirely in line with the average growth chart for girls. 3. USING THE DEVICE 3-1. PRECAUTIONS BEFORE USE - T he child should not be left unsupervised when using the device. - P lace the baby scale on a solid, flat, skid-proof surface (avoid placing it on a carpet, for example). -W eight varies throughout the day, so we recommend weighing before meals to obtain comparable results.
