While this equipm ent provi des very powerful functions wi th extensi ve
vehi cle coverage, it cannot repl ace knowl edge and s kill . To get the
mos t out of this equipm ent, a full unders tanding of vehicle s ys tem s is

Safety guideline
In order to ensure proper operation and satis factory performance, observe the
cauti ons lis ted bel ow.
DANGER
This equipment is designed to compl y with IEC 61010-1 safety s tandards , and
has been tes ted for s afety prior to shipm ent. Excessi ve high voltage m easurem ent
or im proper operation coul d resul t in personal injury, as well as damage to the
equipment or the vehicle. Please read this manual careful ly and be s ure that you
understand i ts contents before us ing the equi pm ent.
The manufacturer dis cl aims all res ponsi bili ty for any acci dent except for that
resulting due to defect in i ts product.
WARNING
For safety reasons , this equipment should not be used to
m eas ure ci rcuits carrying more than 30Vrms or 42.4V peak.
To avoid el ectri cal accident that could res ult i n i njury or
death, do not m easure voltage i n excess of thes e limitations .
Maxim um rated m easurable voltage is 30Vrms or 42.4V
peak.

II. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS ----------------------G
DANGER
When an engine is running, keep the workshop area WELL
VEN TILATED or attach a building exhaus t removal s ys tem to the
engine exhaus t s ys tem. Engines produce carbon m onoxide, an
odorless and poisonous gas that caus es slower reaction tim e
and m ay lead to serious i nj ury or death.
WARNING
Brakes and wheel blocks
Appl y the hand brake and block the wheels before using the tes t
equipm ent.
It is highly recommended to block the wheels on
front-wheel drive vehicles because the hand brake does not hol d
the dri ving wheels .
Drive Test
D o not dri ve the vehicl e and operate the tes t equipm ent at the
s am e time. Any dis traction may caus e an acci dent. Have one
pers on operate the tes t equipment while the other person drives
the vehicle.
N ever place the tes t equipment in front of you when driving the
vehicle becaus e the test equipm ent may hi t your body and caus e
s erious inj ury when the ai r bag infl ates .
D o not try to tes t the SRS air bag s ystem while dri vi ng the
vehicle as unintended air bag inflation m ay result.

Engine Compartment
Maintai n s ufficient clearance between moving components or
bel ts whi le using the test equipment in the engine compartment.
Movi ng components and bel ts may catch loos e cl othing, tes t
cables or a part of your body and caus e damage or pers onal
i njury.
Electrical Components
Al ways turn the igni ti on key OFF when connecti ng or dis connecting electrical
components unless otherwis e ins tructed.
Vehicle Battery
Multis can is designed to prevent damage from revers e polari ty battery cabl e
connection, however, i t is always hi ghl y recom mended to always ensure correct
pol arity term inal connection.
N ever l ay the tes t equipment on vehi cl e battery. You m ay s hort the term inals and m ay
caus e damage to your body, the tes t equipm ent or the battery.
To avoi d dam agi ng the tes t equi pm ent or dis playing fals e data, make s ure the vehicl e
battery is fully charged and the connections to the el ectronic control m odul e are clean
and tight.
The warning messages above and the s afety mess ages contained hereinafter cover
si tuati ons H anatech is aware of. Hanatech cannot know, evaluate or advis e you as to
all of the possi ble hazards . You mus t make s ure that any conditi ons or servi ce
procedures encountered do not j eopardi ze your pers onal safety.

III. WARRANTY SERVICE ------------------------Warranty Period
In principle, Mul tis can is w arranted to the cons umer to be free of defects in materi al
and workmans hip for the peri od of 3 years after the date of purchase.
If the product is found defective during this peri od, the product can be returned to
Hanatech and will be repaired or repl aced free of charge.
Freight and repair Cost
For the repai r of head unit, Hanatech covers the freight cos t for the servi ce during one
year from the date of purchase, and you can s end the troubled uni t to your local
dis tributor without having to pay the freight cos t.
You s hould consult with your l ocal
dis tributor about the validity of remaini ng warranty peri od before s ending the uni t.
For the rem ai ning two years , you are li abl e for any i nternational cost incurred.
Repai r
or replacement will be provided free of charge.
When the warranty peri od is expired after three years, the cus tomer must pay the
round trip freight and the repair or repl acement cos t.
Upon delivery
Hanatech ins pects all the ordered product parts and components are included in the
package before shi pment, and includes the original copy of pre-s hipm ent inspecti on
report i n the box.
As s oon as the product is deli vered to you, pleas e ensure
everything you ordered is properly checked and incl uded referring to the pre-s hipm ent
inspection report. If there is anythi ng missi ng or damaged, you m ust noti fy the local
dis tributor im mediately within 3 working days from the del ivery date for free of charge
replacement of the parts.
In case of trouble
If you encounter any malfunction or trouble wi th the equi pment, please refer to the
Trouble S hooting chapter in this manual .
If the problem cannot be sol ved, pleas e
contact your l ocal dis tributor for assis tance.

Warranty Void
Even in the effective warranty peri od, i f the problem is found to be caus ed by any of
the followi ngs, Hanatech charges the cos t for round trip frei ght and actual cos t for the
s ervice to the cus tomer, and the shi pment back to the cus tomer will be s uspended
until the cus tom er’s paym ent is duly m ade
1. Evi dence of im proper use or application of the product ignoring the cautions and
warnings stipulated in the user’s manual
2. Intenti onal damage or modifi cations to the product or user’s attempt to repai r
without proper authorization
3. A ny dam age caused by Force Maj eure including war and natural di saster
4. Loss of time, inconvenience and other consequential dam age or loss
Warranty void seal
In addi tion to the above m entioned warranty void condi ti ons, warranty s ervi ce is not
provided i n cas e the warranty void seal is broken or rem oved.
If you rem ove the head unit s afety boot, you will s ee a yellow round s ticker coveri ng
one of the s crew hol es in the back. Please be careful not to break this seal and never
try to open the head unit without direct authori zation from the m anufacturer.
Bought in other countries
Only the products properly supplied by the contracted authorized local dis tri butors are
recognizabl e for free of charge warranty service.
Any equipment bought outside the
contracted national territory of your local distributor will be charged for s ervi ce.

It may become
loos e over repeated use, therefore, it is hi ghl y recomm ended to check i f
it is tightl y s crewed frequently. A set of plunger parts are included i n the
basi c s uppli es. Refer to spare parts section herei nafter.

B. Diagnostic Adapters
Diagnostic adapters are sold separatel y, therefore check if all the adapters
you ordered are incl uded in the package upon del ivery.
There are tw o types of adapters : capsulated and wi red types .
Mos t of Mul tis can DLC adapters are capsul ated for better durability and
s torage, however, s om etimes i t is diffi cult or alm ost im possible to connect the
caps ulated adapter to vehicl e side DLC when i t is l ocated deep insi de
beneath the das hboard. We use wi re type adapters for the cars s uch as
Hyundai and Kia that we were reported to have s uch connecti ng difficulti es.

Us ed for all OBD generation 2 and EOBD
com patible vehicles .

general ly located near the dri ver’s s eat and
mos t frequentl y found beneath the dash panel.
2. Toyota / Lexus 17Pin Rectangular
Adapter (P/N. 3001-0011)
Us ed for the diagnosis of Toyota and Lexus
of OBD generation 1.

3. Toyota/Lexus 17Pin Se mi-circular Adapter (P/N. 3001-0012)
Also used for the diagnos is of Toyota and
Lexus of OBD generation 1.
The
vehi cl e si de DLC is general ly found
beneath the dashboard.
Refer to the following w arning m essage.
WARNING
The appearances of this adapter and M AZDA 17Pin adapter are exactly
sam e, however, the internal wi ri ng and circui t are di fferent. Check the
engraved name and the body color of the adapter carefully before use.
Im proper adapter connection may result in serious malfunction of
either control system and Multiscan head unit.
4. Honda 3 P in Adapter and 2 Pin Jump Wire
(P/N. 3-pin: 3001-0014, 2-pi n wire: 3001-0023)
3-pin adapter is used for the diagnosis of Honda
cars of OBD generation 1 that support DTC
read and erase as wel l as data s tream .
Older Honda cars have 2-pin DLC that supports
DTC read only. The jump wire is used for thes e
older cars to bridge the 2-pin DLC termi nals .
The vehi cle s ide DLC is generally located under
the das hboard or the glove box.

5. Mitsubishi and Hyundai 12Pin Adapter (P/N. 3001-0001)
Us ed for the comm uni cation
with Mits ubishi and Hyundai
cars of OBD generation 1.
A wi re type adapter is provided
as the connecting di ffi cul ties of
caps ule type adapter in quite a
few
H yundai
cars
were
reported.
6. Mitsubishi 12+16pin dual headed adapte r (P/N: 3001-0030)
Us ed for the com munication with
Mits ubishi cars with both of 12-pi n
OBD1 and 16-pin OBD2 adapters
on-board.

7. Nissan and Samsung 14Pin Adapter (P/N. 3001-0006)

OBD generation 1.

Us ed for the communication with Daewoo cars
of OBD generation 1.
The vehicle side DLC is general ly located
beneath the glove box, door side.
11. Kia 6Pin Adapter (P /N. 3001-0003)
Us ed for the communicati on with old
Kia
cars of OBD generation 1.
Onl y the Diagnos ti c Troubl e C ode
reading function is avail able for the
cars wi th this type of adapter as only
the slow pulse signal is transmitted
through the vehicle s ide DLC .
The s plit wi re of the adapter is to be connected to the ground terminal of
the vehicl e side DLC.

B. Main DLC Cable
1. Connection to the head unit
a. The male connectors in both ends of the m ain DLC cable are exactl y
s am e and you can connect any of them to the head uni t.
b. Press the mai n DLC cabl e connector into the head uni t 15 pin femal e
connector, and tighten up the two screws for fi rm connecti on.
2. Connecting the DLC adapters
Locate the vehi cl e side adapter and connect the corresponding DLC adapter
to the remaining m ale connector of the m ain DLC cabl e
CAUTION
It is recom mended to keep the main DLC cable connected and s crewed
to the head uni t. Frequent connection and rem oval of the main DLC
cable may loose the fas tening parts and bend the connecting pins .

12V battery power is s uppli ed through m ost of the DLC adapters except
GM/Daewoo 10Pin and Mits ubishi/H yundai 12Pin adapters

D LC adapter.
b. Insert the cigarette lighter connector into the socket, and check if the red
LEDs i n both ends of the cable are ON .

3. Vehicle battery
a. Som etim es i t is necessary to put the head unit in the engi ne
compartment w hen testing OBD1 generati on vehi cl es wi th the
diagnos ti c adapters l ocated near the engi ne, s uch as Toyota, Mazda,
Kia, Ssangyong, BMW, Mercedes Benz, etc.
b. In case power is not supplied through the diagnos ti c adapter,
connect the all igator clips of the battery pow er cable to the battery
termi nals of correct polarity.

A. DTC Read
1. Pulse signa l type
a. Many of old Toyota, Honda, Mazda, H yundai and Kia cars until early 90’s
s upport slow puls e signal output for the DTC reading function.
As s hown below, Multis can s hows the puls e si gnal bei ng recei ved
through the DLC adapter in the top and the recei ved D TC numbers .
b. Manual input
Even older cars such as Honda with 2-pi n adapter have no s ignal
output term inal for DTC i n the D LC adapter.

B. DTC Erase (Clear fault code )
1. Pulse signa l type
a. Puls e s ignal type does not s upport bi-di recti onal s eri al com muni cation,
therefore, a s canner is unable to send a com mand to the control m odul e
to erase the DTC informati on from m em ory.
Thes e old cars require you to rem ove battery term inal to clean up
diagnos ti c informati on from control m odule memory.
Removing the battery term inal will get ri d of all informati on contained i n
the car stereo and other electroni c devi ces . And it m ay not effecti vel y
eras e the faul t codes i n some cars . R efer to the original repair m anual
for further informati on.
Check if DTC inform ation is properly rem oved by reading the troubl e
code agai n after erasi ng the code.
2. Serial communicatio n type
a. Multis can s ends a command to the control module to erase DTC
informati on s tored i n memory, and the control modul e repl ies thereupon.

B. Serial Communicatio n Type

function. Sel ect [C urrent data] from the menu, then the data readings follow.

Some s ys tems like SRS or ABS may be des igned not to support data stream
on purpos e by the car manufacturer whi le the other s ystems are s upported.
A s canner is a passive tool that reads inform ation from the control s ys tem ,
and i t is unable to actively generate i nformation that the sys tem does not
provide.
c.
Some ol d OBD1 generation Korean and European cars equipped with Bos ch
control s ystem that comm uni cates i n ISO9141 protocol provi de relati vel y
slower communicati on s peed. Data s ampling may seem slow with these

C. Data Freeze
The [D ata Freeze] function pl aces the selected data s tream variable on top of
the LCD s creen s o that the us er can check and compare desi red sensor
val ues continually without havi ng to s croll up and down.
This i s different from ‘Freeze Fram e Data’ function of Generic OBD2.

previously expl ai ned [Data Freeze] procedure - Press the [Enter] key

III. Actuation Test ---------------------------------
The actuation tes t is a very hel pful function that tem porarily acti vates
or stops a certain actuator such as an injector, a motor or a sol enoi d
by force, s o that the user can evaluate the s ys tem's condition or the
part’s norm al operati on by observi ng its reaction
Signals from various s ens ors are input to a control unit, and the
actions are taken by controlling to actuators .
Sens ors and
actuators are caus es and effects in a control s ys tem.
Whil e the data s tream functi on is us eful to obs erve if the s ens ors are
working properly and the control unit is coll ecting correct data from
the sensors wi thout probl em, the actuator test is helpful to exam ine if
the actuators are working i n norm al conditi ons and the control unit is
com mandi ng proper control over the s ys tem .
Some of the cars s uch as Niss an or Toyota provide even more
advanced actuation tes ts by letting the us er observe the reaction of
overall control s ys tem when manually adjus ting the s ens or input
val ues .

The name of the actuator to be tested, tes t m ethod and the test condi ti on

generates dis tinctive changes in vehicle condition such as fan whining or

engine is stopped and al l you can hear may be a small and unclear
electric buzzi ng sound.

IV. Black Box -------------------------------------Just like the 'Black Box' or a ‘ fl ight recorder’ of an aircraft, Multis can can

2040 frames of Data Stream for multiple cars .
By l oadi ng the recorded data, you can diagnose s ensor data fram e to
fram e wi thout missing a si ngl e cri tical moment.
B. Memo ry Check
a. Mul tis can checks i ts i nternal m emory before it s tarts recording Bl ack Box
data. If there is no sufficient free memory s pace available, Mul tis can will
s ugges t deleting one or m ore of previous record(s ).
b. Press the [ERASE] key to proceed, then a list of saved data will follow.
Locate the highlight bar on data to delete, and press the [EN TER ] key.

C. PID(Live data parame ter) selection
You are required to s el ect the param eters to record.
Mul tis can wi ll show you the whole li ve data parameters avai lable i n the
control s ystem you selected. Locate the highlight bar on the desired
parameter and press the [EN TER] key.
Selected param eter will be m arked s tar(*).
You can als o deselect the parameter by repeating the procedure.

D. Trigger Modes
There are three trigger modes in the black box function.
Continuous Record Mode (No trigger m ode)
Multis can will record li ve data of s elected parameters up to 2040
fram es or until you press the [ESC] key.
Percentile memory usage and sampl ing time(frequency) wil l appear
in the center of the s creen while recording data, and the actual l ive
data values will remain unchanged.
Since no DTC trigger is applied i n this mode, number of “Before
DTC” frames will remain 0, and the “After DTC” will keep increasing
as the m ore frames are recorded.

Autom atic Trigger Mode (Triggered by DTC)
Multis can wil l keep recording li ve data of selected parameters up to
128 fram es .
Once a D TC is detected or the [ESC] key is press ed by the us er, it
will proceed wi th recording remaining fram es up to 2,040 or until you
abort.
This functi on wi ll let you have a set of data s tream before and after
the EC M’s DTC recogni ti on when you perform the tes t dri ve.
Before DTC, you will s ee the Li ve Data of the selected parameters
keep refres hing, however, once triggered by DTC or [ESC ] key
s troke, onl y the percentile process inform ation and sampli ng
frequency wil l be dis played.

E. Saving the recorded data
When the total fram e number reaches 2040 or when you press the
[ESC ] key to abort, a query as ki ng you if you would li ke to save recorded
data or to dis card i t. Press [YES] to save or [NO] to cancel.
When pressed [YES], a dialog box follows and as ks you to input the tes t
date.
Enter the date and press the [ENTER] key to save the recorded
data to Mul tis can memory.
Pressing the [ESC] key cancels s avi ng data.
Date form at is DD -MM-YYYY(D -day, M-m onth, Y-year), and onl y
numeri c val ues are availabl e.
Tested Vehicle model name and control s ystem will be saved as well as
the date s tamp for future retri eval .

In the l ower part of the dis pl ay, the total num ber of recorded frames, fram e
number before and after the D TC(Diagnos ti c Trouble C ode), and the number
of DTC detected is dis played.
In the exam ple bel ow, you can s ee that a
total of 458 fram es were recorded, and data stream currently shown i n the
mai n window is of the 336th fram e from the beginning.
It als o tells you that
the current fram e is the 80th after 2 trouble codes were detected.
The live data values m ay not be realis tic as the s creen was
captured while the s can tool was linked to a sim ul ator.
2. Data Repla y
a. Press the [YE S] key then the saved blackbox data will s tart replying
Mul tis can pres erves the refresh time intervals of Bl ack Box data.
Therefore, Black Box data is replayed at the s ame speed as when it
was originall y recorded.

The vehicle side OBD2 adapter is eas y to find as the l ocation is quite
regular – under the dash, however, the old vehicle s ide DLC adapters of
OBD generation 1 are located qui te random ly and sometimes i t is very
difficult to find.

I.
Literal definition of OBD and O BD2------OBD is an abbreviati on for On Board D iagnos ti cs . OBD -1 is in reference to
Ti tle 13 Cali fornia Code 1968 titled "Mal functi on and Diagnos tic System for
1988 and Subs equent Model Year P assenger Cars , Li ght-Duty Trucks, and
Medium -Duty Vehicles with Three-Way Catalys t Systems and Feedback
Control." filed on 11-15-85. This required cars s ol d in California to have an
on-board computer process or for on-board s elf-diagnos tics of com puter
s ens ed emission related components, fuel metering device and EGR
(exhaust gas recalculati on s ys tem). A partial or total malfuncti on that
exceeded exhaus t emission s tandard would ill uminate a MIL (m alfunction
i ndi cator li ght) and provi de on-board identi ficati on of the m alfunction
l ocati on. To provi de mal function l ocati on inform ation, codes are stored in onboard com puter m emory. To read codes manufactures use methods, such
as flashing MIL li ght or various s erial data protocols .
OBD -2 is in reference to Title 13 California Code 1968.1 titled "Malfuncti on
and Diagnos ti c System Requirements -1994 and Subsequent Model-Year
Pass enger Cars, Light-Duty Trucks, and Medium -Duty Vehi cl es and

1. Standardization
For the technicians and s can tool engi neers , OBD2 has its technical
meaning as bringi ng the standardized methods of vehicle diagnosis to
the chaotic afterm arket where dozens of car m ake us e different
diagnostic adapters and communication protocols of their own.
The 16-pi n trapezoi d di agnos tic adapter and a few of mos t infl uential
com municati on protocols i ncl udi ng ISO9141-2, KWP2000, and SAE
J1850 VPW and PWM form the standard OBD2 specifications .
Trouble codes and Data s tream variabl es were als o s tandardi zed and
opened to public, so that all the s canners that support aforem entioned
s tandard comm uni cation protocols through the 16-pin OBD2 adapter can
always get the same readouts.
2. Purpose of OBD and OBD2
a. OBD and OBD2 are the nam es of regulati on that were legis lated in USA
for the em ission control .
b. On board diagnos ti cs was im plemented to m oni tor malfunction or failure
of the emission related parts and com ponents to m inim ize the poss ibility
of excessi ve exhaus t gas em ission by letting the dri ver know that the car
has a problem and the techni ci an immediatel y percei ve what is the
problem when any trouble is detected in the emission control s ys tem .
And OBD2 became effective l ater to increas e the effi ciency of OBD by
s tandardization.

B. Generic OBD2 and Enha nced OBD2
1. Generic OBD2
a. OBD2 was im pl emented for the em ission control. Therefore, the
s tandardization is limi ted to powertrai n s ystem that is di rectl y related to
em ission control. It is not m andatory for the other s ys tems such as ABS
and SRS
b. Not all the trouble codes and data stream variabl es are standardi zed,
also. A lis t of trouble codes and data s tream variables that are cl osel y
related to emission control are defined as OBD2 s tandards , however, i t
also allows more codes and vari ables res erved for car make’s ow n
definition and us age.
These s tandardized parts of trouble codes and
data stream vari ables are s o called Generi c OBD 2. Generi c OBD 2
application is limited to em ission rel ated s ys tems and s o is the di agnosti c
readouts
2. Enhanced OBD2
a. Generic OBD2 has limited availabil ity for overall diagnosis , however, an
actual car has a l ot more than this. The control sys tems other than
pow ertrain are not included in the mandatory OBD2 regul ations , and
each car make has di fferent trouble code and data stream defini ti ons for
the reserved non-s tandard fields of powertrain s ystem.
b. The s cope of on board diagnos ti c s ys tem that OBD2 standard features
do not cover is called E nhanced OBD2.
3. Manufac turer ’s OBD
a. Many of Non-USA cars of 1996 m odel -year or l ater have an OBD2 16Pi n
adapter, however the communication with s canners does not follow
s tandardized OBD2 protocols .

coverage as of May, 2003, i t is frequently reported that General OBD2 of
Mul tis can works well wi th EOBD vehicles.
In Europe, EOBD has become m andatory from January 1, 2001, and all
the cars buil t in Europe since then on m ust have been generi c OBD 2

B. Why so complicated
The flow chart s hows the menu selecti on procedure presented above for Cam ry
as an exampl e.
Many of afterm arket s canners have a very simple sel ecti on procedure for Toyota
cars by only s electi ng the di agnos ti c adapter type. Indonesian Tamaraw and Lexus
R X300 are considered s ame for these s canners .
However, the Toyota OE tool has a very detail ed vehi cle s election procedure up to
5 or 6 s teps . The s election procedure of Multis can is also designed to provi de
reliable and diversifi ed diagnosis at OE tool level for each specific vehicle.

1. The difference of Toyo ta from the o ther Japanese cars
Japanese cars wi th the exception of Toyota and Niss an have ID check s ys tem.
A s canner comm uni cates with an EC M to get the ECM ID num ber to identify
the tes t vehicle. Then automati cally determines the appropriate communication
protocol accordingl y.
However, Toyota has no such ID check s ystem. To get the correct respons e, it
is abs olutely necess ary to let the s canner know which car it is going to talk to.
Each vehi cle m odel code has different types of engine and control s ystem. Even
the num ber of sensors is different. To get full inform ation that the vehicle ECM
transmits , the m odel sel ection m us t be as speci fi c as possibl e.
If a s canner s tarts com muni cating with the EC M after simply sel ecting the adapter,
the best result you can get is limited data for the generic i tems that are comm onl y
found in all Toyota cars .

2. How to get the detailed specifications
Model Code (Chass is number)
Open the engine hood and fi nd the m odel code stamped i nto the vehicl e
s peci fi cation tag, attached to fi rewall on the dri ver’s side.
Model year and manufacturing plant
Model year and manufacturing plant i nform ation is contai ned in the
Vehicle Identifi cation Number.
Refer to the m anufacturer’s m anual
book for the details of VIN translation
Equipped System
Some models may require you to confi rm the exi stence of a certai n
s ys tem li ke imm obi lizer or traction control. You can check this from the
w arning l am ps displ ayed in the dash panel right after turni ng the ignition
key ON.

You
m ay s el ect this when you cannot find the model nam e in the lis t or when you
do not want to m ake selecti ons for all the details .
Onl y the adapter type s el ection menu wi ll follow, and then Mul tis can will begi n
to communicate with the ECM.
As m enti oned above, it wi ll work jus t like an ordinary aftermarket tool does ,
and limited data for the comm on generi c items wil l be available in this mode.

4. Incorrect Ad apter
No m atch in the lis t
D espite detai led vehi cl e s electi on procedure of Mul tis can, you m ay
encounter a situation where you cannot find the correct vehicle details i n
the list.
If you s elect a similar vehi cl e model code or other details from
the menu, an incorrect adapter may be sugges ted.
For exam ple, when you select AB-CD 1 m odel code while the actual
vehicle is AB-CD2 which is not included in the l ist, Mul tiscan m ay as k
you to use 17 pi n rectangular adapter even though the vehi cl e has the
17 pin s emi-ci rcular adapter.
The communication may fail i n this cas e.
You are recom mended to
s elect [33. Others ] to tes t the car in generi c mode.
Mul tiple adapters
If Multis can sugges ts to use a diagnostic adapter that is different from
the one that you found i n the car, the sugges ted adapter may be found
elsewhere in the car.
Some Japanese cars have m ulti ple DLC adapters , and generall y each
of them covers different s ys tem s.

1. 17 Pin Rectangular and Semi-Circular Adap ter
Diagnosti c Troubl e Code
D TC readout is provi ded i n Flash code pulse signals for all s ys tems
when usi ng this adapter.
This old comm uni cation type does not al low bi -di rectional
com municati on between the s canner and the ECM. ECM simpl y
transm its the slow pulse signal when the appropriate DLC termi nal
is grounded.
DTC Erase
Faul t code erase by a s canner is not available for the pulse signal
type communication.
You m ust remove the (-) battery termi nal to clear the faul t codes .
Removing the battery term inal will get ri d of al l inform ation contai ned
in the car stereo and other electronic devi ces . And i t m ay not
effectivel y erase the fault codes in s ome cars . Refer to the original
repair manual for further informati on.
Data Stream
D ata Stream / Servi ce Data / Li ve Data is supported for Engine only
for this type of adapter.

1. Communicatio n Start- up
Honda has the EC M ID check s ystem.
Compli cated menu selecti on procedure as in Toyota is not necessary for
Honda cars .
The us er is sim pl y requi red to check the adapter type of the vehicle and
to s elect the adapter and the desi red s ys tem to tes t.
Then Mul tis can autom aticall y begi ns to tal k to the ECM to identify the
s ys tem ID and determ ines i ts com muni cation details according to the
response from the ECM.

3. Difference
It is very di fficult and time consuming to analyze al l the s ys tem IDs for

C. Adapters
1. 2-Pin Connector
2-pin adapter is generall y found together wi th the 3-pin adapter, however,

Live data (Data s tream ) is not availabl e for all s ys tems w hen usi ng this

D. ECM RESET function
Foll owing ECM repl acem ent, faul t code erasi ng or when you feel the
necessity to res et EC M adaptati on due to poor engine perform ance, you can
activate this function.
It cleans up the ECM memory and makes the EC M ready for s el f-adaptation.
1. Select ECM RES ET
You m ay sel ect this functi on when you select the ENGINE CONTROL
sys tem from the SELECT DEVICE menu that follows the adapter type
selection.
2. After Reset
After the res etting, ECM needs som e time to relearn the idli ng condi ti on
and finali ze sel f-adaptation.
Start and idle the car for more than 5 minutes after warm -up.

Niss an has neither the ECM ID check s ys tem like H onda nor the
com pli cated menu selection s ys tem like Toyota.
After s ys tem s el ection, the scanner sends a s et of com mands to the
ECM for all data l istings avail able withi n the vehicle, and then
com municates with the ECM for the avail able items only.

The s ys tem check com mands and comm uni cation details have been
cons tant wi thout change for both 14-pi n and 16-pi n diagnos tic adapters.
Therefore, a s canner does not need to know the ID number or the
detailed vehicle specifi cation. Sim pl y s elect the adapter type and the
s canner will comm uni cate with the ECM for all avail able items.

Mul tis can s hows the detai led function lis tings for the control module.
If it shows the “Communicati on Error” m essage, it is consi dered the vehi cl e has no
s uch a s ys tem or the control module does not support s canner communicati on.

B. Adapters
14-pi n and 16-pin adapters are being us ed for Niss an cars .
In North America, Niss an cars of 1995 model year or l ater usuall y have
16-pi n OBD2 adapter whi le the older cars have 14-pi n adapter.
Som e
cars released around 1996 may have both connectors .
Outsi de North America, l ate m odels of Nissan continue to us e the 14-pi n
adapter in s om e countries , therefore, the application of each adapter is
yet to be confi rmed.
Refer to the connector l ocation herei nafter, and search for the adapter
fi rs t to make a correct selecti on.
C. IVMS (als o appli cabl e to HICAS and ASC D s ystems)

Mul tis can always s hows the IVMS in the s ystem s election m enu.
However, it doesn’ t conclude that the car has the s ys tem or i t is availabl e
for comm uni cation with Mul tis can.

Select IVMS from the s ys tem m enu as s hown above, then Mul tis can will
attempt communication to the IVMS control m odul e. If the car has the
IVMS s ys tem, then Mul tis can will show you the IVMS item lis ti ng.
If the “Com municati on Error” mess age is displayed, the s ys tem is ei ther
not fitted to the vehicle or does not feature self-diagnos tics .
2. IVMS items
Once the com muni cation is es tablis hed, Multis can lis ts al l 22 IVMS item s,
however, in the same m anner, it doesn’t m ean that com muni cation with
each of 22 item s is s upported by the IVMS m odule.
Select an IVMS i tem from the IVMS menu, then Multis can will
com municate to the IVMS control module to check if the i tem is
s upported. If the i tem is supported, then Multis can will s how the
avai lable functions with the item , i n exam ple, live data and actuation test.
If the “Communicati on Error” mess age is displayed, it is probable that
the item is not s upported by the IVMS module.

2. 12+16 Pin Connectors
Many of Mi ts ubis hi cars manufactured in m id 90`s have both the 12-pi n
Mi ts ubishi adapter and OBD2 16-pi n adapter.
Many Mitsubishi control modules with ME LC O s ys tem communi cate
using i ts own conventional protocol, whi ch is not OBD 2 com pliant even
though the vehi cle has the OBD 2 standard adapter.
With MELCO s ystem, each pin of the OBD 2 adapter is ass igned to
indi vidual control m odule, therefore, when the total num ber of control
module exceeds the number of pins , it is necessary to use additional
adapter to cover the excessive control modules .
When the vehi cl e has both the OBD2 16-pin and Mitsubis hi 12-pi n
adapters , the 12+16 pin dual headed adapter mus t be connected for
proper operati on.
WARNING
Do not use this adapter when there is only one 16-Pi n OBD2 adapter or
12-Pin Mitsubis hi adapter. Us e the corres ponding s ingle adapter.

D. Unidentified system ID
1. System ID Check
As explained herein, Mul tiscan autom aticall y checks the s ys tem ID when you
s elect a control s ys tem and s ets up the communicati on wi th the control
module thereupon.
Multis can Mi ts ubis hi s oftw are contai ns thousands of
s ys tem ID for various regional m arket specificati ons, however, i t is s till
possi bl e that you m ay encounter Mitsubis hi cars of whi ch s ys tem ID is not
included in the Mul tis can s oftw are databas e.
2. Alternative System IDs
When Multis can finds an unknown s ystem ID or when it cannot fi nd the
matching s ys tem ID in the database, i t s hows the closes t s ys tem IDs for you
to alternatively s elect as shown below :
In the example, Mul tis can found that the actual s ys tem ID E123 is not
i ncl uded in the database, and it presents tw o clos est IDs of E122 and
E124 for the user’s alternative selecti on.

3. Possible inco rrect values
This is bas ed on the concept that the closest s ystem IDs s hare the
m aj ori ty of s ys tem characteristics w ith the least di fferences . However,
w e cannot guarantee the accuracy of data values when choosing an
al ternative ID .
4. Cooperation for Update
Should you encounter any of thes e missing IDs , pl eas e contact your l ocal
distri butor with the ID num bers s o that we can add them in the next
s oftware update.

the ignition key ON .
Then let Multis can tal k to the control module fi rs t by
s electing a s ystem after connecting the correct adapter.
3. Success and Failure
Success ful com munication or U ni dentified ID report confi rm s that the s ys tem
is available for s canner communicati on.
To the contrary, in the cas e of comm uni cation failure, please check the
following:
z The vehicl e does not have an electroni c control modul e for the
s elected s ys tem
z If the vehi cle has the el ectronic control s ys tem:

Subaru s oftware is being upgraded and is s cheduled to extend its
coverage to 1994 or earli er model years before the end of year 2003.

comm unication for safety reasons . You are recomm ended to check the troubl e
codes m anuall y referring to the following inform ation. It is also recom mended
NOT to test SRS sys tem when using diagnostic equipment for the other s ys tem s
s uch as Engine and Transm ission.

There is a pause for 1 s econd, followed by the codes of 0.5s econd flashes.
When there are multiple codes , the next code foll ows after a

N o Fault Code is represented by ON/OFF flas hes on regular
intervals of 1.3 seconds .
5. Fault Code Erasure
In the sam e manner as i n Fault Code Extraction, Subaru SRS s ys tem

Differently from Hyundai or Kia, Daewoo has no regional variations.
Korean
domes tic version software is com patible with export models, too.
Therefore, Mul tiscan Korean car software package includes Daew oo
domes tic version codes onl y.
2. Model Name
Daewoo has few variations in m odel naming when compared with Hyundai or
Kia. Mos t of D aewoo cars share the sam e name regardless of manufacturi ng
place and regional market except for Lemans and Cielo.

Introduced in 1986 bas ed on Opel Cadet 1.6 or P ontiac Lemans , and
s tarted to im plement TBi fuel i njection s ys tem since 1988. Export model
name was Racer.

VII. SAMSUNG ---------------------------------A. Background
Renault-Nissan-Samsung
Samsung m otor company’s official nam e is Renault-Samsung m otor
com pany, and is a fam il y of Renaul t-Niss an network, and manufactures
knockdown models of Niss an cars i n the assembly pl ant in Korea.
Samsung has two models of SM5 and SM3, which are the same as
Niss an Maxim a and Bluebird.
The electronic control s ys tem of these Niss an cars are directly m igrated
to Samsung cars wi th leas t modifi cation, and therefore, the s canner
com municati on is the sam e as ordi nary Nissan cars .
Refer to the N issan s ecti on in the previous chapter for further informati on.
The licens ed m odels are basi cally prohi bited to sell in other countries ,
therefore, Samsung cars are found in a few lim ited countries .

Trouble Shooting
This part of manual presents you the i nstant acti ons to be taken for
the m ost frequently reported troubles .
The purpos e of this troubleshooting gui de is to minimi ze the loss of
tim e and cos t caus ed by dis puting of troubles that can be sim ply
s ol ved by the us er himself.
Pleas e always refer to this troubleshooting gui de and do as
s ugges ted herein when you have any trouble while using Mul tis can
equipm ent in advance to calli ng up your local dis tri butor.
The m anufacturer keeps endeavoring to minimi ze the possible
troubl es, therefore, remedi es to prevent lis ted problems can be
made without noti ce to i ndi vi dual users .

Would not turn on when the power is supplied
Check the power cable connection
YES. The cable is firmly connected
NO. It w as not properly connected
Reconnect the power cable firmly

The unit may not respond to the key input due to
internal keypad connection failure. The distributor
m ay have to open the head unit to check the
connection. Report the sym ptoms to your local
distributor and wait for the instruction.

Power automatically turns off after turned on
Check the battery voltage
Multiscan requires the power of 8V or higher for
proper operation. Insufficient vehicle battery
voltage m ay result in prom pt system turn off.
Check the vehicle battery voltage
It is lower than 10 V
It is normal. It is higher than 10 V
Use the other power source
Replace the vehicle battery w ith fresh new one.
Or use external vehicle battery for temporary
power supply.
Check the power Amperage
Multiscan requires the power of 600mA or more
for proper operation. Insufficient power amperage
may result in prompt system turn off.
It is lower than 600mA
It is normal. It is higher than 600mA
Use the other power source
Replace the vehicle battery with fresh new one.
Or use external vehicle battery for temporary
pow er supply.
Report to your local distributor
The distributor may have to replace the main
board. Report the symptoms to your local
distributor and wait for our instruction

LCD screen problems
The display is too dim or too dark
Adjust the contrast using the contrast
wheel on the right side of Multiscan
LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display, and it is very sensitive to
temperature.
If you have placed Multiscan in a cold or hot place, the display may
become too dim or too dark when turned on. This is not a defect of
Multiscan, but a normal response of all LCD’s to the change of
temperature.
However, if you cannot control the contrast using the dial, please
contact us for further assistance.
A part of LCD became very dark
Adjust the contrast using the contrast
wheel on the right side of Multiscan
The LCD unit of Multiscan has a backlight for brighter display. This
backlight generates heat as time elapses when turned on.
As mentioned above, because LCD is sensitive to temperature, the
part of the LCD near the backlight may turn dark when you keep
Multiscan turned on for more than 2 hours.
This is not a defect of Multiscan.
However, if the LCD becomes dark too early or the contrast adjustment
doesn’t work, please contact us for further assistance.
Report to your local distributor
If the problem is too serious to use properly or the contrast
dial does not function, report the symptoms to your local
distributor and wait for instruction.
Replacem ent of the LC D module may be necessary.

Communication Error
Check the cable connection
C heck the followings
The main data link cable is firmly connected to the M ultiscan.
The correct adapter is firmly connected to the main data link cable.
The adapter is firmly connected to the vehicle side connector.
Try with the other vehicle
If you can find another vehicle of the different model that requires
the same adapter, please try again with the vehicle.
No, it doesn’t work, either
Yes, it works fine with the other cars
Try with the other vehicles
If you can find other vehicles of different make and
model, try to test with as m any cars as possible.
Check if the car has any other
connector for communication
A car may have multiple connectors for diagnostic
com munication for different systems. Please try
with the other connector if available.
Cable or Adapter is defective
If the communication error occurs with all
cars, we can conclude that the main data
link cable is defective.
If the communication error occurs with
vehicles using a specific adapter, the
adapter is regarded defective
Report the symptom to your local
distributor and wait for instruction.
Software update is necessary
Check if the detailed vehicle
selection was correctly made
Please restart the vehicle selection procedure.
Check if the vehicle is included in
the coverage list
The applicable vehicle range is updated frequently.
Please consult your local distributor if the vehicle
is included in your current software version.
Please report your error to your local
distributor. We will revise the software
and let you have the updated software as
soon as it is released
