When you connect the system to your VCR directly, the copy guard system activates and the picture may not be played back correctly. 7 Safety precautions Avoid moisture, water and dust Do not place the system in moist or dusty places. Avoid high temperatures Do not expose the system to direct sunlight and do not place it near a heating device. When you are away When away on travel or for other reasons for an extended period of time, disconnect the power cord plug from the wall outlet. Do not block the vents Blocking the vents may damage the system. Care of the cabinet When cleaning the system, use a soft cloth and follow the relevant instructions on the use of chemically-coated cloths. Do not use benzene, thinner or other organic solvents including disinfectants. These may cause deformation or discoloring. 2 How to read this manual • Operations are described by mainly using the remote control buttons. If there are the same marks on the main unit, the buttons on the main unit can also be used. • The following marks tell you for which type of the discs the operation can be made. • The illustrations and TV screens may be different between the actual case and the description. • “DVD VR” means a DVD recorded in DVD Video Recording (DVD VR) format. • “VCD” is an abbreviation of “Video CD”. • “SVCD” is an abbreviation of “Super Video CD”. EX-D11[J].book Page 3 Wednesday, March 22, 2006 1:17 PM About discs Introduction Caution for DualDisc playback Playable disc types The non-DVD side of a “DualDisc” does not comply with the “Compact Disc Digital Audio” standard. Therefore, the use of Non-DVD side of a DualDisc on this product may not be recommended. Discs you can play: Disc Type Video Format Mark (Logo) DVD VIDEO NTSC DVD AUDIO — Note on Region Code DVD VIDEO players and DVD VIDEO discs have their own Region Code numbers. This system can play back DVD VIDEO discs whose Region Code numbers include the system’s Region Code, which is indicated on the rear panel. Examples: AU D I O VCD NTSC SVCD NTSC CD — The “Playable” in the following list shows available disc types and recording formats. If a DVD VIDEO with an improper Region Code number is loaded, “REGION CODE ERROR!” appears on the TV screen and playback cannot start. • On some DVD VIDEOs, DVD AUDIOs, VCDs or SVCDs, their actual operation may be different from what is explained in this manual. This is due to the disc programming and disc structure, not a malfunction of this system. Disc type Notes on CD-R and CD-RW *1 DVD-RW Playable Playable DVD Audio – – Playable Playable DVD VR*2 – Playable*2 Playable*2 Recording format DVD Video *1 CD-R/-RW DVD-R *1 VCD/SVCD Playable – – Audio CD Playable – – MP3/WMA/ JPEG Playable Playable*3 Playable*3 MPEG1/ MPEG2 Playable Playable*3 Playable*3 • A DVD VR formatted DVD-ROM is also playable. *1 This system can play finalized discs only. *2 Only when a DVD-R/-RW is compatible with CPRM (Content Protection for Recordable Media), DVD VR format can be used. *3 Recorded with UDF Bridge format. However, some discs may not be played back because of their disc characteristics, recording conditions, or damage or stain on them. Only sounds can be played back from the following discs: MIX-MODE CD CD-G CD-EXTRA CD TEXT is a trademark of DVD Format/Logo Licensing Corporation. • This system supports “multi-session” discs (up to 20 sessions). • This system cannot play “packet write” (UDF format) discs. Some discs may not be played back because of their disc characteristics, recording conditions, or damage or stain on them. Discs that cannot be played back • DVD-RAM, CD-ROM, CD-I (CD-I Ready), Photo CD, SACD, etc. Playing back these discs will generate noise and damage the speakers. Damaged discs and discs in an extraordinary shape (other than a disc of 12 cm or 8 cm (5 inches or 3 inches) in diameter) cannot be played back. Notes on all files • The system can only recognize and play files with one of the following extensions, which can be in any combination of upper and lower case; • MP3: “.mp3” • WMA: “.wma” • JPEG: “.jpg”, “.jpeg” • MPEG1/MPEG2: “.mpg”, “.mpeg” • If a character other than single byte English characters is used in the file name, the track/file name will not be displayed correctly. • The system recognizes up to 150 tracks (files) per group, 99 groups per disc, and the total number of the tracks (files) that the system can play is 4 000. • Since the unit ignores the tracks/files whose numbers are exceeding 150 and the groups whose numbers are exceeding 99, they cannot be played back. • Some files may not be played back normally because of their disc characteristics or recording conditions. • It is possible to playback finalized +R/+RW (DVD Video Format only) discs, “DVD” lights on the front display panel when a +R/+RW disc is loaded. 3 EX-D11[J].book Page 4 Wednesday, March 22, 2006 1:17 PM About discs (continued) For MP3/WMA files • An off-the-shelf MP3 disc may be played in an order different from that indicated on the label attached to the disc. • The system supports MP3/WMA files recorded with a bit rate of 32 – 320 kbps and a sampling frequency of 16 kHz, 22.05 kHz, 24 kHz (WMA only), 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, or 48 kHz. • If the tag information (album name, artist, and track title, etc.) is recorded on a disc, it appears in the file control display on the TV screen. • We recommend to record each piece of material (song) at a sample rate of 44.1 kHz and at a data transfer rate of 128 (96 for WMA only) kbps. • This system cannot play back files encoded with Multiple Bit Rate (MBR). (MBR is a format to encode a file content at several different bit rates.) Disc structure DVD VIDEO/DVD VR A DVD VIDEO consists of “titles” and each title may be divided into “chapters”. A DVD VR consists of “original programs” or “playlists” and each original program/playlist may be divided into “chapters”. Title 1/Original program 1/ Play list 1 Title 2/Original program 2/ Play list 2 Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 1 Chapter 2 For JPEG files • We recommend to record a file at 640 x 480 resolution. • This system can play a baseline JPEG file, excluding monochromatic JPEG files. • This system can play JPEG data taken with a digital camera conforming to the DCF (Design Rule for Camera File System) standard (when a function is applied such as the automatic rotation function of a digital camera, data goes beyond the DCF standard, so the image may not be displayed). • If data has been processed, edited and restored with PC image editing software, the data may not be displayed. • This system cannot play animations such as MOTION JPEG, or still images (TIFF etc.) other than JPEG, and image data with sound. • An image with a resolution of more than 8 192 x 7 680 pixels cannot be displayed. For MPEG-1/MPEG-2 files • The stream format should conform to MPEG system/ program stream. • 720 x 576 pixels (25 fps)/720 x 480 pixels (30 fps) is recommended for the highest resolution. • This system also supports the resolutions of 352 x 576/ 480 x 576/ 352 x 288 pixels (25 fps) and 352 x 480/ 480 x 480/ 352 x 240 pixels (30 fps). • The file format should be MP@ML (Main Profile at Main Level)/SP@ML (Simple profile at Main Level)/ MP@LL (Main Profile at Low Level). • Audio streams should conform to MPEG1 Audio layer2 or MPEG2 Audio Layer-2. DVD AUDIO A DVD AUDIO consists of “groups” and each group may be divided into “tracks”. Some discs include a “bonus group” that requires a password for playing (page 27). Group 1 Track 1 Track 2 Group 2 Track 3 Track 1 Track 2 VCD/SVCD/CD VCD, SVCD and CD consist of “tracks”. In general, each track has its own track number. (On some discs, each track may also be further divided by indexes.) Track 1 Track 2 Track 3 Track 4 Track 5 MP3/WMA/JPEG/MPEG1/MPEG2 discs On an MP3/WMA/JPEG/MPEG1/MPEG2 disc, each still picture (material) is recorded as a track/ file. Tracks/Files are usually grouped into a folder. Folders can also include other folders, creating hierarchical folder layers. This unit simplifies the hierarchical construction of a disc and manages folders by “groups”. Group 1 Track 1 [File 1] Track 2 [File 2] Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 Group 5 • If there is any type of files other than MP3/WMA/ JPEG/MPEG1/MPEG2 files in a folder, those files are also counted in the total file number. 4 EX-D11[J].book Page 5 Wednesday, March 22, 2006 1:17 PM Description of parts Introduction The numbers represent the page numbers.
