8INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS (CONTINUED)Remove the battery cover located onthe rear of the handset by pressing onthe top cover and sliding it downward.1Plug the new battery into the recharge-able battery plug and insert therechargeable battery into the batterycompartment. NOTE: The plug will fit only one way. Ifyou have difficulty, be sure the plugand socket are aligned properly.2Put the battery cover back on bysliding it upward until it clicks intoplace.3Installation of the Rechargeable BatteryCharging the Rechargeable BatteryBe sure the rechargeable battery be fully charged 12 hours prior to initialuse. The handset’s rechargeable battery will be charged when it’s on the base’scharge contacts; the CHARGE indicator will light when it is placed in the base.NOTES:• LOW BATTERY will appear in the display and the handset will beep every 30seconds when the battery power is low and needs recharging. If the batterybecomes weak while you are on a call, the TALK indicator will blink and thehandset will beep once; end the call immediately and return to the base forrecharging.• Every few months, or when charging becomes abnormal, clean the contacts ofthe handset and the base with a standard pencil eraser.• To maximize battery life, fully discharge the battery every month or two. 12BASIC OPERATIONPLACING A CALLAfter the battery has been fully charged,press the TALK button and listen for adial tone; the timer will appear in thedisplay.1Press the Key buttons (0-9) to dial thephone number you wish to call. Tenseconds after dialing, the display willshow the amount of time you havebeen on the phone.2RINGER SWITCHAUTO TALK AND AUTO STANDBYThe Auto Talk feature will allow you to answer a call by simply removing it from thebase, there is no need to press the TALK button.The Auto Standby feature allows you to hang up the phone by simply returning it tothe base.Slide the RINGER ON/OFF switch onthe side of the handset to the ONposition to turn the ringer on. Slide theRINGER switch to the OFF position toturn the ringer off. 1TONE/PULSE SWITCHSlide the TONE/PULSE switch on theside of the base to TONE or PULSE tomatch the service provided on yourtelephone line. If you are not sure ofyour service, please contact yourtelephone company.1CONNECTING THE HEADSETFor hands-free conversation, a headset (not included) can be connected to the2.5mm headset jack on the side of the handset unit. The handset receiver andmicrophone are disabled when a headset is connected. When the headset isconnected, press the TALK button to answer or place a call. 13RECEIVING A CALLThe last 99 incoming calls are saved in the Caller ID log.Make sure that the Caller ID service is turned on by your phone company. Whenyou receive a call, the display will show the name of the caller and number of thecall. To answer the call if the handset is out of the base, press the TALK button. Ifthe handset is in the base, simply remove it from the base. The display will showthe amount of time you have been on the phone.1NOTES: • The incoming call indicator will blink on the base unit, even if the RINGERswitch is off and a call is received.• If you subscribe to Caller ID, the time and date are automatically set when thefirst call is received. • If a call is received from an area which does not provide caller ID service, thedisplay will show, “UNKNOWN”. If a call is received from outside the Caller IDarea, the display will show, “OUT OF AREA”. • If a call is received from a caller that has blocked his/her information, thedisplay will show, “PRIVATE CALL”.• Calls picked up on the first ring will not be logged in the Caller ID log.• Call Waiting calls are shown in the Caller ID log if you subscribe to the extrafeature from the phone company that allows this.• If there are new calls, “NEW” will blink in the display.• If a call is received from the same number more than once since the lastrecords were reviewed, no new entry is made, but the repeat (REP) indicatorand the number of repeat calls is displayed.BASIC OPERATION (CONTINUED)HK250.O/M.QXD  8/30/02  1:19 PM  Page 13
14BASIC OPERATION (CONTINUED)REDIALING A NUMBERPress the TALK button ❶, followed bythe REDIAL button ❷  to automaticallyredial the last number dialed on thishandset (up to 32 digits).NOTE: Please note that only the lastnumber you called on this handset canbe stored in the Redial memory.211ENDING A CALLTo end a call, simply return thehandset to the base, or press theTALK button on the handset.1ADJUSTING EARPIECE VOLUMETo adjust the volume in the earpiece,simply press the REVIEW/VOLUME/❷buttons during a call until thedesired volume level is reached. 1CHANNEL SELECTIONThis telephone allows you to select achannel from the frequencies availableto transmit signals from the base unitto the handset. If the existing channelbecomes noisy or starts havinginterference while in the Talk mode,press the CHN (Channel) button onthe handset for better reception.1OUT OF RANGE WARNINGThe handset and base communicate up to a maximum range. The distance canbe affected by the weather, power lines or other cordless telephones.
