Software NotesThe Crosley USB Turntable will work with any software that supports a USBAudio Device. If you prefer to use software other than the included Audacitysoftware; there are a variety of software packages available.Audacity is free software, distributed under the General Public License(GPL). More information, as well as open source code, can be found on theincluded CD or on the web at http://audacity.sourceforge.net.Audacity works on both Windows (98 and greater) as well as Mac OS(X and 9.2+).For more information, visit http://audacity.sourceforge.netFor help and tutorials, visit http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/tutorials2TroubleshootingNo Sound? If you cant get any sound to play through the software, you need to makesure you have selected the USB input for the recording device. This settingis found under preferences. If you can see the music play on the screen but cant hear it, make sure thePlayback Device is set to the internal soundcard. If you cant hear any sound as the record is playing, click on the microphoneand select Monitor Input.Poor Sound Quality? If your recording sound is distorted or unclear, try adjusting the Input Levelto a lower level. Inspect the needle to make sure it is correctly positioned on the tone arm.21
Set Up for Vista1. Make sure your openprograms on your computerare closed beforecontinuing.2. On the button left of yourscreen, select the STARTmenu.3. Select SETTINGS4. Select CONTROL PANEL.5. Once the window appearsdouble-click the SOUNDcontrol pane. (If theSOUND option is notavailable, choose Switchto Classic View located onthe left panel of thewindow).6. Select the RECORDING tablocated at the top of theSound Control Panel.7. Choose Microphone - USBAudio CODEC as thedefault recording device.(USB Audio CODECrepresents the turntable.)8. Select the SET DEFAULTbutton to confirm selections.4Dividing Recordings Into TracksManually Splitting Your RecordingInto Tracks:1. Select the SKIP TO START button.2. This will ensure the beginning of therecording will be the actual starting location.3. Select PROJECT.4. Select ADD LABEL AT SELECTION.5. This will set the first track to its startingpoint.6. Type in the name of the first track.7. To separate the tracks, click one time onthe line between the cluster (clustersrepresent audio).8. A line will appear where the selection was clicked.9. Repeat steps 4-7 until all tracks have been labeled and clickedfor separation.NOTE: Any track name that is circled can be added or edited.- Zooming in to select the track/tracks separation may be necessary- The space bar will allow you to start and stop playback of the tracksbefore adding a label.- Track names can be edited once they have been exported from Audacity.- Make sure to SAVE your file regularly.19

Select the VOICE tablocated at the top of theSounds and Audio Devicescontrol panel.7. Under VOICE PLAYBACK,choose the internal soundcard as the default device.USB Audio CODEC (USBturntable). Modem, orMicrosoft Sound Mappershould not be selected.8. Under VOICE RECORDING,select USB Audio CODECas the default device.6Dividing Recordings Into TracksBefore dividing your newly recorded album into separate tracks, all editing(cleaning, audio removal, etc.) needs to be complete.1. Select FIT PROJECT IN WINDOW icon(magnifying glass with horizontal linebelow it.)- This will magnify the view so all trackscan be seen. The separation breaks willappear as skinny lines between the clusters(clusters represent audio).Splitting tracks can be done automatically or manually. Automatically is rec-ommended if the record is in good condition and there is a distinct silencebreak between the songs. Another option would be to manually separate.This is recommended if the record is in poor condition or does not have dis-tinct silence breaks between the songs.Automatically Splitting Your Recording Into Tracks1. Select EDIT.2. Select SELECT ALL.3. Select ANALYZE located on the menu bar at the top.4. Select SILENCE FINDER.NOTE: Silence Finder will attempt to detect the silence breaksbetween the songs.5. Type 15 into the SILENCE LEVEL (in Silence Finder table).6. Select OKThis will begin the analyzing process.17
Audacity Set Up for PC1. Select START at the bottom left side of the screen.2. Select ALL PROGRAMS.3. Select AUDACITY.4. Select EDIT from the toolbar.5. Select PREFERENCES.6. Once the AUDACITY PREFERENCES window appears, selectthe AUDIO I/O tab.7. Under PLAYBACK DEVICE, select the internal sound card. USBAudio CODEC (USB turntable), Microsoft Sound Mapper orModem should not be selected.8. Under RECORDING DEVICE, Select USB AUDIO CODEC.NOTE: The USB turntable may show up with a different name in thePreferences window. This may depend on your computer model andoperating system. 99% of the time it will contain USB in the name.9. Under RECORDING - CHANNELS, select 2 (Stereo).10. Check the SOFTWARE PLAYTHROUGH box before exiting.8Adjusting Audio Levels1. Select EDIT.2. Select SELECT.3. Select ALL.4. Select EFFECT tochoose the desired effect.5. Select NORMALIZE tohave the correct volumeon the recording.NOTE: It is recommendedto place the needle on therecord while it is stopped,before you begin therecording, and start theturntable after you beginrecording. If not done therecommended way, theoutput of audio may notallow the Normalize effectto function properly.15
Audacity Set Up for MAC (10.4 and Above)1. Click on the AUDACITY menu at the top of the screen(In the Audacity program).2. Select PREFERENCES.3. Select the AUDIO I/O tab.4. Under PLAYBACK - DEVICE Select BUILT - IN OUTPUT.5. Under RECORDING - DEVICE Select USB AUDIO CODEC.6. Under RECORDING - CHANNELS select 2(Stereo).7. Check the SOFTWARE PLAYTHROUGH box before exiting.8. Select the QUALITY tab.9. Installing Audacity SoftwareBefore BeginningMake sure that the computer and turntable are both plugged in and on.Using the supplied USB cable make sure the USB turntable is plugged intothe computer before proceeding with the software installation.To Install Software (PC)1. If computer is not already on - turn on and allow tofully boot.2. Plug turntable into an AC power outlet and connect theUSB port on the turntable into the USB port on thecomputer using the included USB cable.3. Make sure the turntable is turned on.4. A message may appear on your computer notifying youthat a new device has been detected and is available touse. (This message may or may not appear. Either way,it is normal)5. Insert the CD (Included with the USB turntable) into thecomputer CD drive.6. A window will appear on the computer. Click the INSTALLbutton next to AUDACITY.To Install Software (MAC)1. If computer is not already on - turn on and allow to fully boot.2. Plug turntable into an AC Power outlet and connect theUSB port on the turntable into the USB port on thecomputer using the included USB cable.3. Insert the CD (included with the USB turntable) into thecomputer CD drive.4. Open the CD icon on the computer desktop.5. Drag the Audacity installation folder to your hard drive.It is recommended the folder be moved to theAPPLICATIONS folder.6. A window will appear as the files are copying.7. Remove the installation CD once the files have completedthe copying process3Exporting TracksFollow these steps to export separated files to WAV format and burn to aCD. If you want to convert to an MP3 format, additional 3rd party softwareis needed. Consult software help section for more information.Exporting file to separate files:1. Select FILE.2. Select EXPORT MULTIPLE.3. Select WAVE as the export format.4. Select the export location (this will be where the files get saved).5. Select USING LABEL/TRACK NAME.6. Select EXPORT.20
Set Up for Vista9. Select the PLAYBACK tab located next to the RECORDING tab.10. Choose the Playback device you would like your computersaudio to come out of.11. After selecting the Playback device that best matches yourdesired audio set up select the SET DEFAULT button to confirmselections.NOTE: Do NOT select Speakers - USB Audio Codec as your playbackdevice. USB Audio Codec represents your turntable, and can only be usedas recording input, not a playback output.12. Select APPLY (if available).13. Select OK to exit the Control Panel.14. If computer speakers are not built into the computer, make surethe speakers are plugged into the computers audio output andare turned on.5Dividing Recordings Into Tracks7. A label track will appear and flag icons will be placed along thebottom of the window. This denotes the beginning of eachnew song.8. These flags will be used to create separate tracks for each songon the album once the recording is exported.NOTE: If the flags do not look like the correct representation ofthe album songs you may need to change the setting and try again.- To Adjust1. Select EDIT.2. Select UNDO.a. Repeat steps 1-6 above and try a different setting in theSilence Level field. Adjust the number up from 15 if toomany flags appeared. Adjust the number down from 15if too little flags appeared.b. If the problem still persists, the separation may need tobe done manually.18
Set Up for XP9. Within the same control panel select the AUDIO tab.10. Choose the internal sound card as the default device underSOUND PLAYBACK. USB Audio CODEC (USB turntable)Modem, or Microsoft Sound mapper should not be selected.11. Under SOUND RECORDING, select USB Audio CODEC as thedefault device - this is the USB turntable.12. Check the USE ONLY DEFAULT DEVICES box, to ensure allselections will be applied.13. Select APPLY (if an option).14. Select OK to exit the Sounds and Audio Device Panel.15. If the computers speakers are not built into the computer makesure the speakers are plugged into the computers audio outputand turned on.7Cleaning Your Audio1. Drag the cursor over a portion of theaudio which contains noise.2. Select EFFECT from the tool bar.3. Select NOISE REMOVAL.4. Select GET NOISE PROFILE.5. If the entire recording needs to beedited select SELECT ALL under theEDIT menu. If just a small sectionneeds to be edited, just select thespecific track of audio.6. Select EFFECT from the tool bar.7. Select NOISE REMOVAL.8. To adjust the audio drag the slider inthe NOISE REMOVAL window.9. To preview audio before removingselect the PREVIEW button.10. Select REMOVE NOISE.Important Editing Notes:It is important to always normalize the audio to ensure the best quality ofaudio output. Depending on needles, tone arm, computer set up, etc. audiolevels may vary.Deleting unwanted audio will simply be done by dragging over a section (se-lected audio will be highlighted). Then press DELETE.The noise profile must be selected before removing any noise from the track.The computer may remove all of the audio if actual audio is selected first.Each time an application is started the Noise Profile will need to be set. Hav-ing multiple recordings within the same application will not affect the noiseprofile.16
Audacity Set Up for PC11. Select the QUALITY tab.12. The DEFAULT SAMPLE format should be set to 16-bit.13. Select OK to ensure all selections are applied.14. In the main audacity window, located at the top will be Input andOutput level meters (L and R). The output level meter will have amicrophone image and an arrow button (pointing down). Selectthe arrow button.NOTE: If you dont see the input/output level meters, open thePREFERENCES tab again and select the INTERFACE tab, make surethe ENABLE MIXER TOOLBAR is selected.15. Select MONITOR INPUT (Monitor Input will need to be selectedeach time Audacity is launched).Now you are ready to record!e9RecordingTo become familiar with the recording process it is recommended to startwith short recordings (1-2 min) and then advance to a full LP.1. Press RECORD.2. Start playback on the USB Turntable. As the recording isoccurring, wave form of the audio will be visible on the screen.NOTE: If you do not have audio go back to the preferences menu andmake sure you have Software Playthrough selected and the speakervolume up on your computer.3. The computers soundcard will allow the audio to be heard.4. Play the entire track/album you want to record.5. Press STOP.6. SAVE FILE:Select FILE.Select SAVE PROJECT.Select the file placement and file name.Select SAVE.NOTE: The file saved can only be opened by Audacity since it is anAudacity Project file.14

To ensure the internalsound card will always be used for playback, a few settings will need to bechanged.Audio MIDI Setup Utility:1. Select FINDER.2. Select the APPLICATIONS folder.3. Select the UTILITIES folder.4. Select AUDIO MIDI SETUP.5. Within the AUDIO MIDI SETUP folder:- Select USB AUDIO CODEC as the DEFAULT INPUT.- Select BUILT-IN AUDIO/BUILT-IN OUTPUT as the DEFAULTOUTPUT.- Select BUILT-IN AUDIO/BUILT-IN OUTPUT as the SYSTEMOUTPUT.12
