Software Notes
No Sound?
• If you can’t get any sound to play through the software, you need to make
sure you have selected the USB input for the recording device. This setting
is found under preferences.
• If you can see the music play on the screen but can’t hear it, make sure the
Playback Device is set to the internal soundcard.
• If you can’t hear any sound as the record is playing, click on the microphone
and select Monitor Input.
Poor Sound Quality?
The Crosley USB Turntable will work with any software that supports a USB
Audio Device. If you prefer to use software other than the included Audacity
software; there are a variety of software packages available.
Audacity is free software, distributed under the General Public License
(GPL). More information, as well as open source code, can be found on the
included CD or on the web at http://audacity.sourceforge.net.
Audacity works on both Windows (98 and greater) as well as Mac OS
(X and 9.2+).

• If your recording sound is distorted or unclear, try adjusting the Input Level
to a lower level.
• Inspect the needle to make sure it is correctly positioned on the tone arm.

Dividing Recordings Into Tracks
Manually Splitting Your Recording
Into Tracks:
1. Select the SKIP TO START button.
2. This will ensure the beginning of the
recording will be the actual starting location.
3. Select PROJECT.
4. Select ADD LABEL AT SELECTION.
5. This will set the first track to its starting
point.
6. Type in the name of the first track.
7. To separate the tracks, click one time on
the line between the cluster (clusters
represent audio).
8. A line will appear where the selection was clicked.
9. Repeat steps 4-7 until all tracks have been labeled and clicked
for separation.
NOTE: Any track name that is circled can be added or edited.
- Zooming in to select the track/tracks separation may be necessary
- The space bar will allow you to start and stop playback of the tracks
before adding a label.
- Track names can be edited once they have been exported from Audacity.
- Make sure to SAVE your file regularly.

programs on your computer
are closed before
continuing.
2. On the button left of your
screen, select the START
menu.
3. Select SETTINGS
4. Select CONTROL PANEL.
5. Once the window appears
double-click the SOUND
control pane. (If the
SOUND option is not
available, choose ‘Switch
to Classic View’ located on
the left panel of the
window).
6. Select the RECORDING tab
located at the top of the
Sound Control Panel.
7. Choose Microphone - USB
Audio CODEC as the
default recording device.
(USB Audio CODEC
represents the turntable.)
8. Select the SET DEFAULT
button to confirm selections.
Dividing Recordings Into Tracks
Before dividing your newly recorded album into separate tracks, all editing
(cleaning, audio removal, etc.) needs to be complete.
1. Select FIT PROJECT IN WINDOW icon
(magnifying glass with horizontal line
below it.)
- This will magnify the view so all tracks
can be seen. The separation breaks will
appear as skinny lines between the clusters
(clusters represent audio).
Splitting tracks can be done automatically or manually. Automatically is recommended if the record is in good condition and there is a distinct silence
break between the songs. Another option would be to manually separate.
This is recommended if the record is in poor condition or does not have distinct silence breaks between the songs.
Automatically Splitting Your Recording Into Tracks
1. Select EDIT.
2. Select SELECT ALL.
3. Select ANALYZE located on the menu bar at the top.
4. Select SILENCE FINDER.
Set Up for XP
1. Make sure your open
programs on your computer

2. Open the START menu
located at the bottom left of
the screen.
3. Select SETTINGS.
4. Select CONTROL PANEL.
5. Once the window appears,
double-click the SOUNDS
and AUDIO DEVICES
option. (If the Sound and
Audio Device is not
available, choose the
‘switch to Classic View’
option on the left panel of
the window).
6. Select the VOICE tab
located at the top of the
Sounds and Audio Devices
control panel.
7. Under VOICE PLAYBACK,
choose the internal sound
card as the default device.
USB Audio CODEC (USB
turntable). Modem, or
Microsoft Sound Mapper
should not be selected.
8. Under VOICE RECORDING,
select USB Audio CODEC
as the default device.
NOTE: Silence Finder will attempt to detect the silence breaks
between the songs.
5. Type 15 into the SILENCE LEVEL (in Silence Finder table).
6. Select OK
This will begin the analyzing process.

Adjusting Audio Levels
1. Select EDIT.
2. Select SELECT.
3. Select ALL.
4. Select EFFECT to
choose the desired effect.
5. Select NORMALIZE to
have the correct volume
on the recording.
Audacity Set Up for PC
1. Select START at the bottom left side of the screen.
2. Select ALL PROGRAMS.
3. Select AUDACITY.
4. Select EDIT from the toolbar.
5. Select PREFERENCES.
NOTE: It is recommended
to place the needle on the
record while it is stopped,
before you begin the
recording, and start the
turntable after you begin
recording. If not done the
recommended way, the
output of audio may not
allow the Normalize effect
to function properly.
6. Once the AUDACITY PREFERENCES window appears, select
the AUDIO I/O tab.
7. Under PLAYBACK DEVICE, select the internal sound card. USB
Audio CODEC (USB turntable), Microsoft Sound Mapper or
Modem should not be selected.
8. Under RECORDING DEVICE, Select USB AUDIO CODEC.
NOTE: The USB turntable may show up with a different name in the
Preferences window. This may depend on your computer model and
operating system. 99% of the time it will contain “USB” in the name.
9. Under RECORDING - CHANNELS, select 2 (Stereo).
10. Check the SOFTWARE PLAYTHROUGH box before exiting.

1. Click on the AUDACITY menu at the top of the screen
(In the Audacity program).
2. Select PREFERENCES.
3. Select the AUDIO I/O tab.

5. Under RECORDING - DEVICE Select USB AUDIO CODEC.
6. Under RECORDING - CHANNELS select 2(Stereo).
7. Check the SOFTWARE PLAYTHROUGH box before exiting.
8. Select the QUALITY tab.
9. Set DEFAULT SAMPLE format to 16-bit.
Audacity and all other programs will use the internal sound card for audio
output.

Installing Audacity Software
Before Beginning
Make sure that the computer and turntable are both plugged in and on.
Using the supplied USB cable make sure the USB turntable is plugged into
the computer before proceeding with the software installation.
To Install Software (PC)
1. If computer is not already on - turn on and allow to
fully boot.
2. Plug turntable into an AC power outlet and connect the
USB port on the turntable into the USB port on the
computer using the included USB cable.
3. Make sure the turntable is turned on.
4. A message may appear on your computer notifying you
that a new device has been detected and is available to
use. (This message may or may not appear. Either way,
it is normal)
5. Insert the CD (Included with the USB turntable) into the
computer CD drive.
6. A window will appear on the computer. Click the INSTALL
button next to AUDACITY.
Exporting Tracks
Follow these steps to export separated files to WAV format and burn to a
CD. If you want to convert to an MP3 format, additional 3rd party software
is needed. Consult software help section for more information.
Exporting file to separate files:
1. Select FILE.
2. Select EXPORT MULTIPLE.
3. Select WAVE as the export format.
4. Select the export location (this will be where the files get saved).
5. Select USING LABEL/TRACK NAME.
6. Select EXPORT.
To Install Software (MAC)
1. If computer is not already on - turn on and allow to fully boot.
2. Plug turntable into an AC Power outlet and connect the
USB port on the turntable into the USB port on the
computer using the included USB cable.
3. Insert the CD (included with the USB turntable) into the
computer CD drive.
4. Open the CD icon on the computer desktop.
5. Drag the Audacity installation folder to your hard drive.
It is recommended the folder be moved to the
APPLICATIONS folder.
6. A window will appear as the files are copying.
7. Remove the installation CD once the files have completed
the copying process

7. A label track will appear and flag icons will be placed along the
bottom of the window. This denotes the beginning of each
new song.
8. These flags will be used to create separate tracks for each song
on the album once the recording is exported.
NOTE: If the flags do not look like the correct representation of
the album songs you may need to change the setting and try again.
9. Select the PLAYBACK tab located next to the RECORDING tab.
10. Choose the Playback device you would like your computers
audio to come out of.
11. After selecting the Playback device that best matches your
desired audio set up select the SET DEFAULT button to confirm
selections.
- To Adjust
1. Select EDIT.
2. Select UNDO.
a. Repeat steps 1-6 above and try a different setting in the
Silence Level field. Adjust the number up from 15 if too
many flags appeared. Adjust the number down from 15
if too little flags appeared.
b. If the problem still persists, the separation may need to
be done manually.
NOTE: Do NOT select “Speakers - USB Audio Codec” as your playback
device. USB Audio Codec represents your turntable, and can only be used
as recording input, not a playback output.
12. Select APPLY (if available).
13. Select OK to exit the Control Panel.
14. If computer speakers are not built into the computer, make sure
the speakers are plugged into the computers audio output and
are turned on.

Set Up for XP
Cleaning Your Audio
1. Drag the cursor over a portion of the
audio which contains noise.
2. Select EFFECT from the tool bar.
3. Select NOISE REMOVAL.
4. Select GET NOISE PROFILE.
5. If the entire recording needs to be
edited select SELECT ALL under the
EDIT menu. If just a small section
needs to be edited, just select the
specific track of audio.
6. Select EFFECT from the tool bar.
7. Select NOISE REMOVAL.
8. To adjust the audio drag the slider in
the NOISE REMOVAL window.
9. To preview audio before removing
select the PREVIEW button.
10. Select REMOVE NOISE.
Important Editing Notes:
9. Within the same control panel select the AUDIO tab.
10. Choose the internal sound card as the default device under
SOUND PLAYBACK. USB Audio CODEC (USB turntable)
Modem, or Microsoft Sound mapper should not be selected.
11. Under SOUND RECORDING, select USB Audio CODEC as the
default device - this is the USB turntable.
12. Check the USE ONLY DEFAULT DEVICES box, to ensure all
selections will be applied.
13. Select APPLY (if an option).
14. Select OK to exit the Sounds and Audio Device Panel.
15. If the computers speakers are not built into the computer make
sure the speakers are plugged into the computers audio output
and turned on.
It is important to always normalize the audio to ensure the best quality of
audio output. Depending on needles, tone arm, computer set up, etc. audio
levels may vary.
Deleting unwanted audio will simply be done by dragging over a section (selected audio will be highlighted). Then press DELETE.
The noise profile must be selected before removing any noise from the track.
The computer may remove all of the audio if actual audio is selected first.
Each time an application is started the Noise Profile will need to be set. Having multiple recordings within the same application will not affect the noise
profile.

Audacity Set Up for PC
Recording
To become familiar with the recording process it is recommended to start
with short recordings (1-2 min) and then advance to a full LP.
1. Press RECORD.
2. Start playback on the USB Turntable. As the recording is
occurring, wave form of the audio will be visible on the screen.
NOTE: If you do not have audio go back to the preferences menu and
make sure you have “Software Playthrough” selected and the speaker
volume up on your computer.
11. Select the QUALITY tab.
12. The DEFAULT SAMPLE format should be set to 16-bit.
13. Select OK to ensure all selections are applied.
14. In the main audacity window, located at the top will be Input and
Output level meters (L and R). The output level meter will have a
microphone image and an arrow button (pointing down). Select
the arrow button.
3. The computers soundcard will allow the audio to be heard.
4. Play the entire track/album you want to record.
5. Press STOP.
6. SAVE FILE:
Select FILE.
Select SAVE PROJECT.
Select the file placement and file name.
Select SAVE.
NOTE: The file saved can only be opened by Audacity since it is an
Audacity Project file.
NOTE: If you don’t see the input/output level meters, open the
PREFERENCES tab again and select the INTERFACE tab, make sure
the ENABLE MIXER TOOLBAR is selected.
15. Select MONITOR INPUT (Monitor Input will need to be selected
each time Audacity is launched).
Now you are ready to record!e

Additional Important Macintosh Settings
Everything has now been set up in Audacity, but your MAC needs to know
that the turntable will not be used as an output device. To ensure the internal
sound card will always be used for playback, a few settings will need to be
changed.
Audio MIDI Setup Utility:
1. Select FINDER.
2. Select the APPLICATIONS folder.
3. Select the UTILITIES folder.
4. Select AUDIO MIDI SETUP.
10. Select OK to ensure all selections are applied.
11. In the main Audacity window, located at the top will be Input and
Output level meters (L and R). The output level meter will have a
microphone image and an arrow button (pointing down). Select
the arrow button.
NOTE: If you don’t see the input/output level meters, open the
PREFERENCES tab again and select the INTERFACE tab, make sure
the ENABLE MIXER TOOLBAR is selected.
