Do not use sharp, pointed objects on the touch screen. The touch screen is designed to be used with your finger or the stylus that came with your device. This stylus is made specifically for a capacitive touch screen. Anything else will harm your touch screen and may cause your device to stop working. The touch screen is a liquid crystal display (LCD). Should the display break (unlikely except eep in d rinse extreme circumstances) and you come into contact with the liquid crystal, wash and ns yyour skin thoroughly. Be careful to avoid splintered glass. Accent 1000 Hardware Manual Page 6 Turning the Accent On or Off/Putting to Sleep This section explains how to turn on the device, put the device into sleep mode and wake it, restart the device, and power the device off. You can change the operation of the power button. For information about setting up the power button in NuVoice, see “Managing Power Settings” on page 34. Turning on the Accent 1. Press and hold the power button located on the top edge of the device. When you u hearr a beep, bee release the button. The green power LED will illuminate. The LED will remain illuminated while the device is on. The LED will blink when the device is in sleep mode. 2. Wait for the NuVoice software to load. This will take about 45 seconds. onds. 3. First time only: Review the NuVoice Software Agreement and select Wizard ect I Agree. Agree The Exploration EEx will load. detai 4. Once the Exploration Wizard loads, check the battery status level. For details, see “Charging the Battery” on page 12. Putting to Sleep/Waking the Accent cent ent When you finish using the Accent for the day, sleep mode ay, put it in sleep mo mod overnight. This allows Windows updates to download. To restart the device: TTools key and then select the Toolbox key. 1. Select the To 2. Select Maint Menu and then select Power Management. 3. Select Restart and then select Yes at the confirmation prompt. Accent 1000 Hardware Manual Page 7 Powering Off the Accent When you don’t plan to use the Accent or want to store it for more than a couple days, it is best to power off the device completely. 1. Select the Tools key. 2. Select the Shutdown option. Charging the Battery AR 3. Select Yes at the confirmation prompt. Always use the battery charger that came with your device. Any other charger may damage the battery. How long the battery lasts depends on how you use your device. The Battery/Charging LED When the device is on: The battery/charging LED is not illuminated. When the battery has less than 15% (about three hours) of its power remaining, the LED will blink yellow. When the device is plugged into the charger: The battery/charging LED will glow yellow. When the device is fully charged, the LED will turn green and remain on until the charger is unplugged. Accent 1000 Hardware Manual Page 8 Attaching Bumper Guards AR Your Accent shipped with protective bumper guards. These guards fit over the corners of the device to provide extra protection. If your device is likely to be subjected to heavy stress, you may want to attach the bumper guards. IN If you attach the bumper guards, be sure to secure them m with screws. Push the bumper guard onto the corner. orner. 4. Insert the mounting screw through ough the hole in the gguard and into the hole in the device. Note: Be sure to insert the same screw that you removed in step 2. 5. Tighten the screw. 6. Repeat steps 1 – 5 for the other three corners. Accent 1000 Hardware Manual Page 9 Removing the Wire Stand If you do not want to use the stand, you can remove it from the back of the device. You can reattach it at any time. 1. Place the device face-down on a flat surface. IN AR 2. Remove the screws from the holders at the end of each of the stand’s legs. 3. Pull the holders free and put them in a safe afe place ace in case you yo need to use them later. Loose holders could be a choking ng hazard. LI hem out ut of the hole ho 4. Spread the legs apart to pull them holess iin the back of device. 5. Pull the stand free and put it in a safe place in case you need to use it later. Important! If you reattach the stand, be sure to secure the legs with the holders to prevent someone from pulling it loose accidentally. Accent 1000 Hardware Manual Page 10 Removing or Reattaching the Handle PR EL IM IN AR If you want to remove the handle from the device, simply remove the two screws that hold it in place. To reattach the handle, line up the holes in the handle with the holes on the back of the device. Accent 1000 Hardware Manual Page 11 Applying a Screen Protector If you plan to use a screen protector, apply it before attaching the device frame. If the frame is already in place, you must remove it before applying the screen protector. If you need to remove the frame, see “Replacing the Device Frame” on page 21. 1. Turn your device off and lay it flat on a table. wat 2. Remove dust and fingerprints from the screen using a lint-free cloth dampened with wa water or flatscreen TV cleaner. 3. Align one edge of the protector with one edge of the screen. Press the protector onto the screen, adjusting the protector until itt covers all rs the screen along edges. EL IM IN 7. Use the squeegee included to smooth out the protector and d remove air bubbles bubble and wrinkles. 8. Wipe the protector with a lint-free cloth loth oth to remove any fingerprints. PR lint ector with h a damp lint-free lin Hint: Regularly wipe off the protector cloth to remove fingerprints, smudges, etc. If rty, rep y, peel it off and replace re the protector becomes too dirty, it with a new protector. Accent 1000 Hardware Manual Page 12 Attaching the Device Frame Removing the Screws from the Bottom of the Device Before you can attach the frame, you must remove two screws from the bottom of the device. Important! After removing these screws, set them aside. You will need them later if you want to secure the frame to the device with screws. 1. Place the device face-down on a flat surface with the bottom facing toward you. PR EL IM IN AR 2. Remove the screws shown below with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove these two screws 3. Accent 1000 Hardware Manual Page 13 Attaching the Device Frame Note: You must attach the device frame before you can mount a Keyguard or TouchGuide over the screen. 2. Press the tabs into the slots. 3. Pull out slightly on the sides of the frame. 4. Push the sides down over the own until they fit ov edges of the device. ed EL IN AR 1. Line up the Keyguard tabs with the slots on the top of the device. 6. Push the bottom of the frame over the bottom edge of the device. Snap the frame into place. 5. Pull out slightly on the frame e bottom of the fram Accent 1000 Hardware Manual Page 14 Attaching the Device Frame More Securely When you initially attach the frame, the sides rest against the sides of the device loosely. When you insert a Keyguard into the frame, a user could pull hard on the Keyguard and pull it loose from the frame. To prevent this from happening, secure the sides of the frame by pressing hard on each side until it snaps into place. d the th The sides now fit tightly against the device, and Keyguard cannot be pulled loose. Once you snap na the sides of the frame into place, they are designed re designe to hold securely. For an Even More Secure Fit If you do not expect to remove and reattach the frame to the device evice frequently, you may want to insert screws in the top and bottom holes of the frame. If you expect reattach the frame to the ect to remove and an rea device frequently, you may not want to use the screws. 1. Place the device face down on a flat surface. EL IM 2. Insert the two small screws from the plastic bag through the holes in the top of the frame and into the corresponding holes es in the top of the device. 3. Tighten all fourr screws Phillips screwdriver.. When the Device Frame is Attached Securely After you attach the fra frame securely to the device, you can attach a Keyguard or TouchGuide to the me. See “Attaching “Attaching tthe Keyguard” on page 22 or “Attaching the TouchGuide” on page 24. frame. Accent 1000 Hardware Manual Page 15 Replacing the Device Frame If it becomes necessary to remove or replace the device frame, do the following: 2. If you secured the frame to the device with screws, remove the screws. 3. Pull the sides of the frame loose from the device. If you snapped the sides in place, you’ll need to grip the sides and pull hard. 4. Snap the bottom of the frame loose from the device. IM IN AR 1. If you are using a Keyguard or TouchGuide, remove it from the frame.* Hint: You may want to use a flat-head ead screwdriver or a similar tool. EL 5. Lift out the tabs at the top of the device and an lift the frame off the devic device. 6. Attach the new frame. Accent 1000 Hardware Manual Page 16 Attaching, Raising, and Removing a Keyguard Attaching the Keyguard 1. Attach the device frame, if you have not already done so. See “Attaching the Device Frame” on page 18. 2. Hold the Keyguard over the screen, with the pins toward the top of the screen and the tabs toward the bottom. IN AR Important! Position the Keyguard so that the tabs are on the bottom. The tabs must be e abl aable to lie flat against the screen, allowing the Keyguard to snap into place. 4. Then insert the other othe he pin into the opening on the other side of the device frame. PR EL IM 3. Insert one of the Keyguard pins into the opening near the top of the device frame. 5. Press down on the bottom portion of the Keyguard to snap the tabs into place. Note: If the Keyguard tabs at the bottom do not snap into place, make sure that the Keyguard is not upside-down. (See step 1.) Accent 1000 Hardware Manual Page 17 Raising the Keyguard If you need temporary access to the screen—for example, for programming, changing device settings, cleaning the screen, etc.—you can raise the Keyguard without removing it completely. If you want to remove the Keyguard from the device completely, see “Removing the Keyguard” below. 1. While holding the bottom edge of the device with one hand, use the thumb of your other hand to grasp the bottom edge of the Keyguard in the middle. 2. Pull upward to release the bottom tabs. IN AR 3. Leaving the pins inserted in the top of the device frame, simply lift the bottom of the Keyguard guard ua to uncover the screen. The Keyguard will remain the upright position, giving you easy access cess to the t screen. Removing the Keyguard EL 1. Attach the device frame, if you have not already done so. See “Attaching the Device Frame” on page 18. 2. Align the TouchGuide so that the two squares at the top are positioned at the upper right corner of the display. 3. With the bottom tabs in place, lift upward with your fingers to bend the top right corner of the TouchGuide slightly and insert nse the tab into the top right slot of the frame. e. Grasp the thicker plastic Accent 1000 Hardware Manual Page 19 Attaching a Carry Strap The carry strap connectors are located on the top and bottom of the device. At the end of each side of the strap there is loop connector and, on the strap side, a quick-release connector. 1. Decide whether to connect the carry strap to the top or bottom connectors on the device. 2. Detach the loop connector from the strap by pressing in on the sides of the quick-release connector. 4. Thread the loop op connector through the loop. onnecto throug EL IM IN 3. Thread the loop through a strap connector on the device. AR Carry Strap Connector 6. Insert the loop connector into the strap connector until they click and hold together. PR 5. Pull the connector through until it is tied tie securely to the device. vice. 7. Repeat these steps to connect the other end of the strap to the device. Accent 1000 Hardware Manual Page 20 Installing a Wheelchair Mounting Plate With the mounting plate in place, the device can be mounted on a table stand or a wheelchair mount. If you purchased the wheelchair mounting plate, you received the mounting plate and four screws in a plastic bag. Note: If you ordered a separate NuEye™ Tracking System, a different mounting plate will ill be need needed. See en “Mounting a NuEye Module” on page 27. isplay. isplay 1. In that case, if you do not activate your copy of Windows within 30 days, Windows will quit working and you will not be able to use your device until you restore or activate Windows.
