8Getting StartedSetupCharging of the Handset BatteriesThe handset of your cordless telephone is powered byrechargeable batteries. It charges automatically when-ever the handset is in its charger or base unit.You should charge the batteries for 10-12 hours whenyou first receive your phone. You will know the batter-ies needs charging when:•   The low battery message is displayed:•   The handset seems completely dead, the LCD is completely clear and does notactivate when you press the keys.•   If the phone will not be used for a long period of time, remove the batteries to preventpossible leakage.NOTE: When in LOW BATTERY mode, the keypad sounds, backlighting and speak-erphone features will not work. When your battery has been charged, your features willreturn to their normal function.IMPORTANT:1.  Do not dispose of batteries in a fire, they might explode.2.  Do not open or mutilate the batteries. Toxic substances may be released,  causingharm to eyes or skin.3.  Exercise care in handling batteries in order to prevent an accidental short of  thecharge contacts, potentially causing the batteries to overheat.Installation of Batteries1. Place the new batteries in the handsetwith the positive and negative polesaligned in the battery compartment.2. Replace the battery cover by sliding itupwards.3.  If the new batteries are not alreadycharged, place the handset in its baseunit or charger and allow it to charge for10-12 hours. After that, be sure to placethe handset in its base when not in useto insure maximum daily performance..   WARNING: Alkaline batteries must NOTbe used in your mi 6823 cordless tele-phone. Use only the batteries that camewith your phone, or contact VTech Cus-tomer Service (contact information onpage 2) to order additional batteries.4.  Do not dispose of these batteries into household garbage, they should be properlyrecycled.5.  Do not charge the batteries with other electrical devices.
9Getting StartedSetupIMPORTANT:  FOR MAXIMUM PERFOR-MANCE OF YOUR CORDLESS TELEPHONESYSTEM:1. Choose a central location for your base unit.2.  Install your base unit and extension hand-sets away from electronic equipment, suchas personal computers, television sets andmicrowave ovens.3. In locations where there are multiple cordlesstelephones, separate the base units as faraway as possible.4. Install your telephone equipment away  fromheat sources and sunlight.5.  Avoid excessive moisture, dust or extremecold.Check Battery IndicatorIf you receive a check battery warning, it indicates one of the following:1.  There are no batteries in your handset. You need toinstall batteries into your handset (see Installation ofBatteries section on the previous page.)2. You have accidentally installed alkaline batteries intothe handset. (Alkaline batteries must NEVER be usedin this phone. See the warning on the previous pagefor additional information about batteries for this telephone.)3. The rechargeable batteries in your handset need to be replaced with new batteries.4. The batteries have been installed incorrectly. Reinstall (see Installation of Batteries)and/or the diagram in the battery compartment on the handset.Connecting to Phone LinePlug one end of the telephone line cord into the jack on the back of the base unit. Thenplug the other end of this cord into the wall jack. Before connecting to phone line, besure to charge the battery for at least 12 hours.Checking for Dial ToneAfter the batteryies are charged, press ON on the handset. The LCD displays PHONEand shows a call timer, and you will hear a dial tone. If not, see In Case of Difficulty.CAUTION: Use only the VTech power supply provided with your telephone.
10Wall MountingGetting StartedThe wall mount brackets are designed for use on standard wall mount plates only. Wallmounting is optional.1. Plug the AC adapters into an electrical outlet, and the DC connector to the bottom of thebase unit.2. Connect the telephone line cord to the jack at the bottom of the base unit, and theother end to the wall jack.3.  Line up the tabs on the wall mount adapters with the holes at the bottom of the baseunit/back of the handset charger. Snap the wall mount bracket firmly in place.4. Mount the base unit/handset charger on the wall. Position the base unit/handset chargerso the mounting studs will fit into the holes on the wall mount bracket. Slide base unit/handset charger down on the mounting studs until it locks into place.

12Basic OperationHandset OperationMaking Calls• Press ON (or, SPEAKER to use the handset  speak-erphone feature). Dial the phone number.                                   -OR-• Dial the phone number first; then press ON (orSPEAKER).• Press OFF to end your call.Answering Calls• Press any key except OFF, INT, MUTE, REDIAL/PAUSE and the softkeys.• Press OFF to end your call.Adjusting Handset Volume (also applies to the hand-set speakerphone and headset)• The volume control is on the left edge of the handset.During a call, press  or   key to adjust the listeningvolume to a comfortable level. When you reach themaximum or minimum setting, a double-beep willsound.NOTE: The procedure is  the same for the handsetearpiece, speakerphone and headset.Flash Function• You can use your mi 6823 with services such as callwaiting. When you receive a call-waiting signal, simplypress the ON/FLASH key to switch to the new call.Press ON/FLASH again to switch back to the originalcall.NOTE: Use ON/FLASH to access other phonecompany subscriber services, as described by yourprovider.Redial Funtion• Press REDIAL/PAUSE to display the last telephonenumber dialed from the handset (up to 32 digits).Use   or   to scroll through the 5 previously dialednumbers. When the beginning or the end of the rediallist is reached, a double-beep will sound.•    When  the desired number is reached, press ON orSPEAKER to dial.• Press OFF to exit the redial review list.NOTE: When redial memory is empty, and REDIAL is pressed, a double beep will sound.• When the desired entry displays, press DELETE to delete it. You’ll hear a confirmationbeep.
13Basic OperationMute Function• During an active call, press theMUTE.DELETE key to disable the micro-phone. The screen will display:• Press MUTE.DELETE again to return to normaltwo way conversation. MICROPHONE ONwill display briefly.Intercom Call• From the idle (OFF) mode, press INT. Thefirst handset (HS1) will display:• The other handset (HS2)  will ring and thescreen will display:• Press INT or SPEAKER on HS2 to answerthe intercom call. The screens will display:• Press INT or OFF on either handset to endthe call.•NOTE: If HS2 is out of range, or on an externalcall, when HS1 attempts to intercom it, thedisplay of HS1 will show:Call Forward and Call TransferAn external call can be forwarded or transferredfrom one handset (HS1) to the other handset(HS2). The difference between forward and trans-fer depends on if HS1 needs to talk with HS2 be-fore the external call is actually sent to HS2.Handset Operation
14Basic OperationCall Transfer• A handset (HS1) on an external call can forward it to the other handset (HS2) bypressing the  INT key.NOTE: The external call is put on hold automatically.• HS2 will ring, showing an intercom call.• HS2 can answer the intercom call by pressing ON.• HS1 and HS2 can discuss the external call.• Press OFF on HS1 to transfer the external call to HS2.• HS2 is now on the external call. CALL TRANSFERRED will display on HS1.NOTE: If there is no answer on HS2, then HS1 can be reconnected to the call on hold bypressing  ON.Conference CallIt is possible to establish a conference betweentwo handsets and the external line.If a HS1 already has a connection to the externalline, and HS2 goes off-hook, a conference is im-mediately established.  Both handsets will show:Base OperationFrom the base unit, press PAGE to locate thehandsets.• When the handset is in idle, press PAGE. Thehandsets will display:• To end the page at the base, press PAGEagain.• To Mute the page tone at the handset, pressOFF.Call Forward• A handset (HS1), on an external call can for-ward it to the other handset (HS2), by press-ing and holding the INT key. 15Basic OperationPhonebook OperationYour mi 6823 can store up to 50 numbers with names in memory. Each memory locationcan hold up to 32 digits for the number and 16 characters for the name.NOTE: The handsets share a common phonebook, which is stored in the base. Thismeans that entries inserted by one handset are available for both handsets, and if onedeletes a phonebook entry, it will disappear from both handsets.When one handset is accessing the phonebook, the other handset cannot access it atthe same time. If this is attempted, NOT AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME will display on thesecond handset.Storing a New Entry• Press  SEL.• With  Phonebook  selected, pressSEL.• Press   to select STORE. PressSEL.• You will be prompted to ENTERNUMBER. Use the dialing keys toenter the number you wish to storein the phonebook. Press the MUTE.DEL  key to backspace and makecorrections. Press SEL.• You will then be prompted to ENTERNAME. Use the dialing keys to spellthe name. Press SEL.• You’ll hear a confirmation tone, andthe new phonebook entry will bedisplayed.NOTES:• If the phonebook is full, the handsetwill display PHONEBOOK IS FULL.• You can also press REDIAL/PAUSEthen   or   to scroll to the previouslydialed number from the redial list youwant to store in the phonebook. 18Basic OperationCalls Log (Caller ID - Call Waiting)Caller ID - Call Waiting IDYour mi 6823 is capable of displaying the name and/or number of the party calling beforeyou answer the phone (Caller ID or CID). It is also capable of displaying CID informationin conjunction with a call waiting alert signal (Call Waiting Caller ID). With Call WaitingCID, the CID data is displayed so you can decide whether to answer the incoming call, orcontinue with your current conversation. Your mi 6823 can hold up to 50 CID entries.NOTES ABOUT CALLER ID & CALL WAITING CALLER IDThese are subscription services, provided by most regional telephone service pro-viders. You must subscribe to these services to get the benefits of these      features.If you do not subscribe to Caller ID services, you can still use your mi 6823 andthe other features it offers.Due to regional incompatibilities, CID information may not be available for every callyou receive. In addition, the calling party may intentionally block their name and/orphone number from being sent.VTech• As new CID/Call Waiting ID records are re-ceived, your bandset displays will alert you tothe new Caller ID records, for example:• After you review all new CID records, the NEWcall indication will be turned off and the screenwill show:•    If the call log is full, the oldest entry is deleted tomake room for the new call. If unable to detect the number,ENTER NUMBER will be prompted. At the lowest setting, displaywill show:• The handset will not ring when a call comes in ifringer volume is setted to the lowest setting.• Press SEL to confirm.Ringer Tone• From the idle (OFF) mode, press SEL then  or key to RINGER TONE.• Press SEL. You will then be prompted to chooseINTERCOM CALL or OUTSIDE CALL. Pressthe   or   keys to select the desired option.• Press SEL. Press the   and   keys (or entera digit 0 through 9) to sample the ring tones.  Thescreen, will show:• Press SEL to confirm.Key Tone (preset to ON)• From idle (OFF) mode, press SEL then   or key to select KEY TONE.• Press SEL. The name can be a maximum of 16characters.• From the idle (OFF) mode, press SEL then theand  keys to select HANDSET NAME.• Press SEL. The display will show the currentsetting, for example:• Press DEL to backspace then spell the desiredname.NOTE: The characters are entered in the same wayas for the phone book, see page 15.• Press SEL to confirm.Language (preset to English)• From the idle (OFF) mode, press SEL then or   key to LANGUAGE.• Press SEL. Press the   or   keys to scrollfrom English to French or Spanish.• Press SEL to confirm.Message WaitingYour telephone can detect a visual message waitingsignal (VMWI),  generated by many telephoneservice providers. If you subscribe to voice mail ser-vice from your local telephone company (fee re-quired), and a VMWI is provided, the handset willdisplay  MESSAGE WAITING, alerting you to newmessages.Once you have reviewed all new messages,the VMWI alert will automatically be turned off.Handset SettingsVTechClear Message WaitingIf, after reviewing all new voice mail messages, theVMWI alert still remains on the screen and the MES-SAGE WAITING LED on base is still flashing, you canturn them off manually:• From the idle (OFF) mode, press SEL then   or key to CLEAR MSG WAIT.

To exit, press OFF.Dial Type (preset to Tone)• From the idle (OFF) mode, press SEL then      or key to DIAL TYPE.• Press SEL then use   or   key to scroll fromTONE to PULSE.• Press SEL to confirm.NOTE: When the phone is set for PULSE dial mode, itis possible to switch to temporary TONE mode duringan ongoing call by pressing *. Once pressed, TONEwill be used for rest of the call.  After you hang up, thephone will return to pulse dialing for the next call.
24Advanced OperationHeadset OperationYour mi 6823 handset is equipped with a 2.5mm headset jack for use with an optionalaccessory headset for handsfree conversations. If you choose to use the headsetoption, you must obtain an optional accessory headset that is compatible with the mi6823.To purchase a headset, call VTech Customer Service at 1-800-595-9511.Once you have a compatible 2.5mm headset, locate the headset jack on the mi 6823handset. Connect the plug on the headset cord to the jack (under a small rubber flag) onthe cordless handset. The plug should fit securely. Do not force the connection.NOTE:•   Whenever a compatible headset is con-nected to the cordless handset, the micro-phone on the handset will be muted. This isdone to limit the effect of background noise.• When a compatible headset is connected tothe cordless handset, your speakerphone fea-ture will be disabled. To use your speaker-phone feature, simply disconnect the headsetfrom the handset.Belt ClipThe mi 6823 is also equipped with a detach-able belt clip. Align the pins on the inside edgeof the clip with the notches on the sides of thehandset. The belt clip should snap securelyinto place. Do not force the connection.Headset Operation
25Additional InformationIn Case Of DifficultyIf you have difficulties in operating your phone, the suggestions below should solve theproblem. If you still have difficulties after trying these suggestions, call VTech Commu-nications at 1-800-595-9511. In Canada, call VTech Telecommunications Canada Ltd.at 1-800-267-7377.The Phone Doesn’t Work At All• Make sure the power cord is plugged in.• Make sure the telephone line cord is plugged firmly into the base unit and thetelephone wall jack.• Make sure the batteries are properly charged. If you get a LOW BATTERY messageor indication, the batteries needs to be charged.No Dial Tone• First check all the suggestions above.• If you still don’t hear a dial tone, disconnect the base unit from the telephone jackand connect a different phone. If there is no dial tone on that phone either, theproblem is in your wiring or local service. Contact your local telephone company.You Get Noise, Static, Or A Weak Signal Even When You’re Near The Base Unit• Household appliances plugged into the same circuit as the base unit can sometimescause interference. Try to move the appliance or the base unit to another outlet.You Get Noise, Static, Or A Weak Signal When You’re Away From The Base Unit• You may be out of range. Either move closer to the base, or relocate the base unit.• The layout of your home may be limiting the range. Try to move the base unit toanother position.The Handset Does Not Ring When You Receive A Call• Make sure you have the ringers activated. Refer to the section(s) on RingerVolume in this user's manual.•  Make sure the telephone line cord is plugged firmly into the base unit and the telephone jack. Make sure the power cord is plugged in.• You may be too far from the base unit.• You may have too many extension phones on your telephone line to allow all ofthem to ring.
