The PROGRESSIVE indicator “ ” on the display window is not lit. S-VIDEO/COMPONENT Video selector switch About SCANNING MODE To display video on the television (monitor) screen, the conventional scanning method is called “Interlaced scanning.” With this method, only half of the horizontal lines are displayed at a time. So two fields complete a single picture (frame); i.e., the first field, containing all the odd-numbered lines, is displayed followed by the second field, containing all the even-numbered lines. On the other hand, the Progressive scanning system scans all horizontal lines at a time, so you can double the number of pictures compared with the interlaced scanning, resulting in flicker-free, high-density picture. To enjoy the progressive scanned video, a monitor (or TV or projector) to be connected to the unit must have the Progressive inputs. Depending on the material source format, DVD VIDEO discs can be classified into two types; film source and video source (note that some DVD VIDEO discs contain both film source and video source). Film sources are recorded as 24-frame-per-second information, while (NTSC) video sources are recorded as 30frame-per second (60-field-per-second interlaced) information. When the unit plays back a film source material, uninterlaced progressive output signals are created using the original information. When a video source material is played back, the unit interleaves lines between the interlaced lines on each to create the interpolated picture and putputs as the progressive signal. NOTES: • Some discs may not be played back with the progressive scanning mode correctly because of the disc characteristics or recording condition. • There are some progressive TV and High-Definition TV sets that are not fully compatible with the unit, resulting in the unnatural picture when playing back a DVD VIDEO disc in the Progressive scanning mode. In such a case, use the Interlaced scanning mode. To check the compatibility of your TV set, contact your local JVC customer service center. • You cannot make the progressive scanning mode active in following cases. – The unit is in the VCR mode. – The disc is played back in the DVD mode. – The S-VIDEO/PROGRESSIVE video selector swich is set to S-VIDEO positon. 60 2C51201AE(58-Back) 60 15/3/03, 11:16 AM Language code list Enter the appropriate code number for the initial settings “Audio”, “Subtitle” and/or “Menu” (see pages 5456). In the unlikely event that the heads become dirty enough to be clogged, no picture will be played back. This can easily be determined if, during playback of a known good tape, there is good sound, but no picture (picture is extremely snowy). If this is the case, have the DVD/VCR checked by qualified service personnel. Good Picture Snowy Picture NOTES: • DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN THE VIDEO HEADS OR SERVICE THE UNIT BY REMOVING THE REAR COVER. • Video heads may eventually wear out and should be replaced when they fail to produce clear pictures. • To help prevent video head clogging, use only good quality VHS tapes. Discard worn out tapes. Notes Auto Clock Setting Notes for Canadian customers regarding the clock feature of your DVD/VCR. The XDS signals are carried only by certain broadcast television stations (for example, the signal is carried by most Public Broadcasting Service stations). You must be able to receive a station carrying the XDS signal to use the Auto Clock Setting to set your DVD/VCR’s internal clock. If you live in an area that does not broadcast XDS signals, you must set the clock manually. Please see page 25 for instructions on how to manually set your DVD/VCR’s clock. Special note for residents of Newfoundland: The Auto Clock Setting cannot be used to set the DVD/VCR’s internal clock to Newfoundland time. The time zone command does not include a setting for the Newfoundland time zone. Trying to use the Auto Clock Setting in the Newfoundland time zone could result in an incorrect time setting or no setting at all. Please set your DVD/ VCR’s clock using the Manual Clock Setting. 63 2C51201AE(58-Back) 63 15/3/03, 11:16 AM Specifications GENERAL Power supply: Power consumption: Weight: Dimensions: AC 120V 60Hz Operation: 18W Stand by: 2W 7.9lbs (3.6 kg) Width : 16-15/16 inches (430 mm) Height : 3-7/8 inches (99 mm) Depth : 9-13/16 inches (249 mm) Inputs/Outputs: Video: In: 1Vp-p/75 ohm Out: 1Vp-p/75 ohm Audio: In: –8 dBm/50k ohm Out: –8 dBm/1k ohm Antenna: UHF/VHF IN/OUT: 75 ohm coaxial Hi-Fi Frequency Response: 20Hz to 20,000Hz Hi-Fi Dynamic Range: More than 90dB VCR section Video Head: Audio Track: Tuner: RF Channel Output: F.FWD/REW Time: DVD section Signal system: Applicable disc: Audio characteristics: Frequency response: S/N Ratio: Harmonic distortion: Wow and flutter: Dynamic range: Output: Pickup: ACCESSORIES: 4 Rotary Heads Hi-Fi Sound - 2 Tracks / MONO Sound - 1 Track 181 Channel Freq.
