 iii Definitions The following terms are used throughout this document. Item Definition DCE Data Communications Equipment. This designation defines the direction (inputor output) of the various RS-232C interface signals. Modems are always wired asDCE. See also DTE. DTE Data Terminal Equipment. This designation defines the direction (input or out-put) of the various RS-232C interface signals. Most user equipment, as well asPCs, are wired as DTE. See also DCE. GCU Gemini Control Unit board Gemini/PD High specs mobile radio modem. PD = Parallel decode HDX Half Duplex. A unit which uses separate transmit and receive frequencies, butwhich may not transmit and receive simultaneously. RS-232 Industry–standard interface for low speed data transfer (EIA-RS-232E).RSS Radio Service Software. This software allows configuration and testing of  theGemini/PD. Simplex A unit which uses the same frequency for transmit and receive.

PRODUCT OVERVIEWThis document provides the informationrequired for the operation and maintenanceof the DATARADIO Gemini/PD mobile radio-modem.1.1 Intended AudienceThis document is designed for use by engi-neering design, installation, and mainte-nance personnel.1.2 General DescriptionGemini/PD is a mobile radio-modem aimedat the public safety and public utility marketsto meet demand for high speed and highthroughput. It integrates all the necessaryhardware for data-only vehicular installationsup to but not including the laptop PC and itsapplication software.  Example ofapplications are:1. Database inquiry systems.Small number of brief messages, (usu-ally from the mobile station) with fairlylong responses.2. Computer-aided dispatch (CAD).Large number of messages, (usuallyfrom the base station) with very briefresponses.3. Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL).Using a GPS receiver, determines posi-tion, speed and direction of fleet mem-bers.The Gemini/PD is made-up of a maintransceiver  and a auxiliary receiver forParallel Decode (PD), a 40 Watt poweramplifier, a Gemini Control Unit (GCU) withDSP driven modem and an integrated OEMGPS receiver.Features:• Rugged water-proof die-cast aluminumchassis.• Data speeds of  9600  to  19200 b/s(9600 b/s maximum in half channels)• 3 available user ports using standardRS-232 interface• Built–in 16-channel synthesized radiotransceiver.• Power output of 10W to 40W (softwarecontrolled).• Half duplex or simplex operation.1.3 ConfigurationOperating characteristics of the Gemini/PDare configured by Dataradio SystemEngineering for communication protocolsand network settings.A  Radio Service Software (RSS) is providedfor radio/modem maintenance, adjustmentsand frequency programming. The RSS isMSDOS based and will run on any 486 orhigher PC (2 Megabytes memory required).WARNING:  The frequency band 406 to406.1 MHz is reserved for use by distressbeacons and cannot not be programmed intothe unit.

Specialized equipment and training isrequired to repair the GCU board and radiomodules. Contact Technical Support for service in-formation before returning equipment. ATechnical Support representative may sug-gest a solution eliminating the need to returnequipment.1.6.1 Factory Repair When returning equipment for repair, youmust request an RMA (Returned MaterialAuthorization) number. The Tech Supportrepresentative will ask you several questionsto clearly identify the problem. Please givethe representative the name of a contact per-son who is familiar with the problem,should questions arise during servicing ofthe unit. Customers are responsible for shippingcharges for returned units. Units in warrantywill be repaired free of charge unless thereis evidence of abuse or damage beyond theterms of the warranty. Units out of warrantywill be subject to service charges. Informa-tion about these charges is available fromTechnical Support.2. Itmay also tolerate user pull-up toexternal +12 VDC (car battery), butan isolated dry contact is preferreddue to the risk of noise related falsealarms caused by the vehicle’selectrical system.We recommend the use of a shielded 9-wirecable with all pins connected. Adjustments andMaintenance1.1 OverviewThis chapter outlines the basic adjustment pro-cedures required upon initial installation andthereafter at prescribed maintenance intervals.Units are delivered from the factory properlyaligned and tested on the frequencies specifiedat time of order. Adjustment beyond that de-scribed in this chapter is not required unless ra-dio modules have been tampered with or re-paired. In such cases we recommend completefactory re-alignment as special test jigs are re-quired.3.1 Intended AudienceThis chapter is intended for use by installationand maintenance personnel.3.2 Equipment RequiredThe adjustments described below require thefollowing equipment:• 13.6 VDC (nominal), 20A regulated powersupply.• Radio service monitor (IFR or equivalent).• Cable with mini-UHF male connector toconnect Gemini/PD to the service monitor.• Gemini Radio Service Software,• A 486 PC (or better) to run the RSS.• Normal radio shop tools.3.3 Maintenance IntervalsThe adjustments described below should bedone at annual intervals or whenever a deterio-ration in performance indicates that adjustmentmay be required.3.4 Tests & Adjustments3.4.1 Preliminary VerificationBefore performing any adjustment, verify the per-formance of the unit as shown in the Table 1.Important note: Before proceeding make sure thatthe service monitor has been calibrated recently andhas warmed up for at least the time specified by itsmanufacturer.Some reported frequency and deviation problemshave actually been erroneous indications from serv-ice monitors that have not adequately warmed up.This is particularly likely when field service is doneduring winter months.3.4.2  Basic Tests & adjustmentsRecommended Tests:1. TX power output2. Carrier frequency error3. Frequency deviationNote: Only if a loss in system performance hasbeen detected, RX SINAD and RX audiodistortion should be verified.Adjustments:1. Transmitter power output2. Frequency error3. Transmitter deviation3.4.3  Tests & adjustments Proce-dureRefer to the RSS help file for details &parameter information.1. Connect the Gemini/PD main antenna con-nector (or the auxiliary receiver) to theTX/RX input of  the service monitor using asuitable length of 50 ohm cable.2. Connect the Gemini/PD to a suitable powersupply and adjust the supply voltage to 13.6volts.3. Using a suitable 9 conductor straight RS-232 cable, connect the Gemini port 1 to theRS-232 port of a PC and run the GeminiRSS program.4. Press GET to get the configuration of theunit.5. Refer to “Tests and Adjustments” table.

120 20110-003  PRELIMINARY Gemini/PD   Technical Manual73.4.5  GPS Diagnostics ProcedureOVERVIEWThe detection of the POSition message shows a GPS CONNECTED LED. After about threeminutes, detection of the one Pulse Per Second (PPS) should flash the POSITION ACQUIREDindicator, this means that the GPS has a position solution.If the GPS has a good view of the sky and still has not generated any position solution withinthree minutes (it may take up to 10 minutes or more if the sky view is partially blocked.)  thefollowing trouble-shooting procedures should be undertaken to isolate the fault:1) Disconnect the GPS antenna cable connector from the Gemini radio and check for + 5 VDCon the center pin of the GPS antenna connector on the radio using a DVM. If the voltage ispresent, do not reconnect the cable and proceed to step 2.2) With the DVM, measure resistance between the shell and the center conductor of the GPS ca-ble, resistance should be between 100 and 300 Ohms, if it measures open or short circuit theGPS antenna is either a passive antenna which is the WRONG type, or a defective active an-tenna, replace with a known good active antenna.3) Connect the new antenna to Gemini and wait about three minutes for the POSITIONACQUIRED indicator to start flashing on Gemini, if not, the Gemini radio or its GPS receiveris defective.
