3INTRODUCTIONSAFETY INFORMATION FOR MOBILEPHONESIMPORTANTREAD THIS INFORMATION BEFORE USINGYOUR MOBILE CELLULAR TELEPHONEThe cellular telephone is one of the most exciting and inno-vative electronic products ever developed. With it you canstay in contact with your office, your home, emergency ser-vices, and others.For the safe and efficient operation of your phone,observe these guidelines.Your mobile cellular telephone is a radio transmitter and re-ceiver. When the phone is ON, the antenna is the part of thephone that sends out and receives radio frequency (RF) en-ergy. The phone operates in the frequency range of 824 MHZto 894 MHZ and employs commonly used frequency modu-lation (FM) techniques. When you use your phone, the cel-lular system handling your call controls the power level atwhich your phone transmits. The power level can range from0.006 of a watt to 3 watts.EXPOSURE TO RADIO FREQUENCY ENERGYIn 1991 the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE), and in 1992 the American National Standards Insti-tute (ANSI) updated the 1982 ANSI Standard for safety lev-els with respect to human exposure to RF energy. Over 120scientists, engineers, and physicians from universities, gov-ernment health agencies, and industry, after reviewing theavailable body of research, developed this updated Standard.In March, 1993, the U.S. Federal Communications Commis-sion (FCC) proposed the adoption of this updated Standard.To operate within this updated ANSI Standard, use yourphone as described under “Efficient Phone Operation.”EFFICIENT PHONE OPERATIONDo not operate your mobile cellular telephone when holding theantenna, or when any person is within 4 inches (10 centimeters)of the antenna.A person or object within 4 inches (10 centimeters) of the an-tenna could impair call quality, cause your phone to operate at aApplicant: Shintom Co., Ltd. 4higher power level than necessary, and expose that person to RFenergy in excess of that established by the updated ANSI Stan-dard.For best call quality, keep the antenna free from obstructionsand point it straight up.If you want to limit RF exposure even further than the updatedANSI Standard, maintain a distance from the antenna of morethan 4 inches (10 centimeters). Of course, you may also chooseto control the duration of your calls.ANTENNA CARE AND REPLACEMENTDo not use the phone with a damaged antenna. If a damagedantenna comes into contact with the skin, a minor burn may re-sult. Replace a damaged antenna immediately. Consult yourmanual to see if you may change the antenna yourself. If so, useonly a manufacturer approved antenna. Otherwise, have yourantenna repaired by a qualified technician.Use only the supplied or an approved antenna. Non-approvedantennas, modifications, or attachments could impair call qual-ity, damage the phone, and violate FCC regulations.DRIVINGCheck the laws and regulations on the use of cellular tele-phones in the areas where you drive. Always obey them. Also,when using your phone while driving, please:• give full attention to driving,• use hands-free operation, if available, and• pull off the road and park before making or answering acall if driving conditions so require.ELECTRONIC DEVICESMost modern electronic equipment is shielded from RF en-ergy. However, RF energy from cellular telephones may af-fect inadequately shielded electronic equipment.RF energy may affect improperly installed or inadequatelyshielded electronic operating and entertainment systems inmotor vehicles. Check with the manufacturer or its repre-sentative to determine if these systems are adequatelyshielded from external RF energy. 5Turn your phone OFF in health care facilities when any regu-lations posted in the areas instruct you to do so. Hospitalsor health care facilities may be using equipment that couldbe sensitive to external RF energy.AIRCRAFTTurn your phone OFF before boarding any aircraft.• Use it on the ground only with crew permission.• Do not use it in the air.To prevent possible interference with aircraft systems, U.S.Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations requireyou to have permission from a crew member to use yourphone while the plane is on the ground. To prevent interfer-ence with cellular systems, FCC regulations prohibit usingyour phone while the plane is in the air.CHILDRENDo not allow children to play with your phone. It is not atoy. Children could hurt themselves or others (by pokingthemselves or others in the eye with the antenna for example).Children also could damage the phone, or make calls thatincrease your telephone bills.BLASTING AREASTo avoid interfering with blasting operations, turn your unitOFF when in a “blasting area” or in areas posted: “Turn offtwo-way radio”. Construction crews often use remote con-trol RF devices to set off explosives.POTENTIALLY EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERESTurn your phone OFF when in any area with a potentiallyexplosive atmosphere. It is rare, but your phone or its ac-cessories could generate sparks. Sparks in such areas couldcause an explosion or fire resulting in bodily injury or evendeath.Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere are often, butnot always, clearly marked.
